Borrelia burgdorferi, which is the causative agent of Lyme disease, is transmitted from infected Ixodes ticks to a mammalian host following a tick bite. Upon changing the host organism from an Ixodes tick to a warm-blooded mammal, the spirochete must adapt to very different conditions, which is achieved by altering the expression of several genes in response to a changing environment. Solution NMR structure of Borrelia burgdorferi outer surface lipoprotein BBP28, a member of the mlp protein family.

Lyme disease is the most widespread vector‐transmitted disease in North America and Europe, caused by infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex spirochetes. We report the solution NMR structure of the B. burgdorferi outer surface lipoprotein BBP28, a member of the multicopy lipoprotein (mlp) family. The structure comprises a tether peptide, five α‐helices and an extended C‐terminal loop. The fold is similar to that of Borrelia tunicate outer surface protein BTA121, which is known to bind lipids. Evidence for Myosin VIIa-Driven Transport of Rhodopsin in the Plasma Membrane of the Photoreceptor-Connecting Cilium

Defects in the gene encoding for the unconventional myosin VIIa leads to human Usher syndrome 1B, the most common form of hereditary combined blindness and deafness. To determine cellular function of myosin VIIa, we have investigated the subcellular localization of myosin VIIa in spacial relation relationship to potentially interacting proteins in mammalian photoreceptor cells. Rapid and specific detection of F17-related pilin and adhesin genes in diarrheic and septicemic Escherichia coli strains by multiplex PCR

The F17-related adhesins are prevalent in Escherichia coli strains isolated from calves with diarrhea or septicemia and from lambs with nephropathy. The F17 family includes the F17a, F17b, F17c, and F111 fimbriae produced by bovine E. coli strains and the G agglutinin produced by human uropathogenic E. coli strains. An easy and inexpensive multiplex PCR method was developed to detect all the F17-related fimbriae and to identify four subtypes of structural subunit genes and two distinct subfamilies of adhesin genes by only two runs of amplification. Numerical Analysis of Bearing Capacity of a Ring Footing on Geogrid Reinforced Sand

A ring footing is found to be of practical importance in supporting symmetrical constructions for example silos, oil storage container etc. In the present paper, numerical analysis was carried out with explicit code FLAC3D 7.0 to investigate bearing capacity of a ring footing on geogrid reinforced sand. Effects of the ratio n of its inner/outer diameter (Di/D) of a ring footing, an optimum depth to lay the geogrid layer were examined. It was found that an intersection zone was developed in soil under inner-side (aisle) of ring footing, contributing to its bearing capacity. Immunoelectron-microscopic localization of synaptophysin in the organ of Corti of the guinea pig.

Synaptophysin has been localized previously in the mammalian cochlea at the light-microscopic level and in few reports by electron microscopy using either a preincubation procedure or the avidin-biotin reaction. Here we present results of the electron-microscopic analysis for postembedding immunoreactivity of synaptophysin in the cochlea of the guinea pig of LR-White-embedded samples. Strong synaptophysin immunoreactivity is located in the cytoplasm of the efferent nerve endings at the base of inner and outer hair cells. A case involving a girl who died at 11 years of age and who had developed normally until the age of 18 months, at which time further psychomotor maturation stopped and then regressed, is reported. The patient appeared hypotonic and showed loss of deep tendon reflexes, as well as bulbar signs and increasing immobility. Visual impairment resulted in blindness at the age of 7 years. Her disease was diagnosed as late infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (LINAD) after examination of sural nerve biopsy samples and after autopsy. Meropenem Permeation through the Outer Membrane of <i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</i> Can Involve Pathways Other than the OprD Porin Channel

The outer membrane protein (OMP) OprD is the major channel through which carbapenems permeate the outer membrane of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In this study, we analyzed the OMP profiles of several P. aeruginosa clinical isolates showing diminished susceptibility to imipenem while remaining susceptible to meropenem. All these isolates lacked OprD or showed a reduced expression of this porin. Susceptibility to meropenem was thus independent of the level of OprD expression, indicating that the antimicrobial could be taken up via an alternative route.
