Concentrations of inhibins and activin in women undergoing stimulation with recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone for in vitro fertilization treat…

2001

To investigate the influence of human recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) on circulating serum concentrations of the ovarian proteohormones inhibin A, inhibin B, pro alpha-C, and activin A and serum levels of estradiol after down-regulation with GnRH analogue.Serum concentrations of ovarian proteohormones and estradiol.Academic clinical practice.30 women who underwent assisted reproductive techniques.Blood samples were analyzed for inhibin A, inhibin B, pro alpha-C, activin A, and estradiol during IVF treatment at points coinciding with pituitary down-regulation, stimulation with recombinant FSH, ovulatory triggering, and the luteal phase of the cycle.Activin A levels did not cha…

Complexity of expression of intermediate filament proteins, including glial filament protein, in endometrial and ovarian adenocarcinomas

1991

The expression patterns of intermediate filament proteins of primary and metastatic endometrial (n = 18) and ovarian (n = 24) adenocarcinomas were analyzed by immunocytochemistry using a panel of specific antibodies and by gel electrophoresis of cytoskeletal preparations, followed by immunoblotting. All cells of all endometrial adenocarcinomas studied contained the "simple epithelial"-type cytokeratins (CKs) 8, 18, and (mostly) 19, with variable numbers of cells also positive for CK 7 and vimentin. In addition, most of these tumors contained individual cells or groups of cells that were positive for the stratification-related CKs 4, 5, 6, 13, 14, and 17. The latter CKs were often associated…

Longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis with AQP4 antibodies revealing ovarian teratoma.

2013

Paraneoplastic myelitis is a rare inflammatory disorder most frequently associated with solid tumors or lymphoproliferative disorders. Patients often harbor onconeuronal antibodies and their prognosis is usually poor. Here we report a 42-year old woman with longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis and aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies that led to the diagnosis of ovarian teratoma. After tumor removal and immune therapy (including corticosteroids, plasma exchange, intravenous immunoglobulins and rituximab) the patient progressively improved achieving complete recovery. Histological study of the teratoma demonstrated neural tissue containing AQP4 expressing cells and intense inflammatory infi…

High progesterone levels in women with high ovarian response do not affect clinical outcomes: a retrospective cohort study

2014

Background The potentially detrimental role of progesterone during the follicular phase has been a matter of controversy for several years; however, few studies have analyzed the effects of combined raised estradiol and progesterone levels on pregnancy outcomes. The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of high progesterone levels on clinical outcomes in the context of high ovarian response. Methods We performed a retrospective cohort study that included 2850 women classified as high responders. The women were subdivided into six groups depending on their progesterone concentration on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration: 1.81 ng/ml (>p90). Ovarian …

Ovarian Endometrioid-like Yolk Sac Tumor Treated by Surgery Alone, with Recurrence at 12 Years

1999

Abstract We describe the case of a stage Ia endometrioid-like yolk sac tumor (YST) of the ovary, which was originally misdiagnosed as a malignant struma ovarii and not treated with adjuvant chemotherapy. After 12 years, a contralateral dermoid cyst was excised along with a small omental nodule of partially necrotic and calcified endometrioid-like YST. No tumor was detected in several other biopsy specimens, and a peritoneal lavage was negative for tumor cells. Since there was no evidence of remaining tumor and the serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) level was normal after the second operation, the patient was followed. Serial serum AFP levels remained normal for 4 months. At a second-look laparotomy …

Acute abdomen due to endometriosis in a premenopausal woman taking tamoxifen.

2003

Tamoxifen exhibits agonistic properties on the uterus. We describe a premenopausal woman who, while having tamoxifen due to a diagnosis of in situ ductal carcinoma, developed endometriosis requiring surgery.

Does the diagnosis center influence the prognosis of ovarian cancer patients submitted to neoadjuvant chemotherapy?

2015

To compare prognosis of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (AEOC) patients based on where the first surgical assessment was performed.Retrospective analysis of primary AEOC patients was performed and three groups were formed based on where the decision of primary treatment was taken: Internal, if the decision was carried out at our Institution (PDS (Primary Debulking Surgery), I-IDS (Internal-Interval Debulking Surgery)) and Referred in case women were referred after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) from other Centers (R-IDS (Referred-Interval Debulking Surgery)).Among 573 AEOC, 279 (48.7%) were PDS and 294 (51.3%) IDS. In particular, 134 of 294 (45.6%) were R-IDS and 160 (54.4%) were I-IDS.…

Three-dimensional ultrasound evaluation of ovarian masses.

1995

Seventy-six women with ovarian masses first detected with two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound were then evaluated with three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound. Two-dimensional ultrasound detected four of five ovarian malignancies. One additional ovarian carcinoma was diagnosed by 3D scanning. Observation of papillary projections, characteristics of cystic walls, and the extent of capsular infiltration of tumors was superior with 3D ultrasound as was the calculation of ovarian volume. Fifty-seven of the women studied underwent surgery within 7 days of 3D ultrasound evaluation. Histologic examination of surgical specimens confirmed the 3D sonographic diagnoses. There was one false positive and one fals…

Improving ovarian tissue cryopreservation for oncologic patients: slow freezing versus vitrification, effect of different procedures and devices.

2013

Objective To compare slow freezing (SF) with four vitrification techniques (VT) for cryopreservation of ovarian tissue (OT) and to evaluate the best protocol for human OT in a xenograft model. Design Experimental study. Setting University hospital. Patient(s) Patients undergoing fertility preservation. Animal(s) Ovariectomized nude mice. Intervention(s) Cryopreservation of bovine OT after SF and four VTs (VT1, VT2, VT3, and VT4) by combining two cryoprotectant vitrification solutions (VS1 and VS2) and two devices (metallic grid and ethyl vinyl acetate bag), after which the cryopreservation of human OT by SF and VT1 and xenograft into nude mice. Main Outcome Measure(s) Follicular densities, …

Dopamine receptor 2 activation inhibits ovarian vascular endothelial growth factor secretion in vitro: implications for treatment of ovarian hypersti…

2013

Objective To ascertain whether vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion by luteinized granulosa cells (GCs) is modulated by the dopaminergic system in a dose-dependent fashion and how this is related to the differential efficacy of dopamine receptor 2 (D2)-agonists (D2-ag) in preventing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Design The relationship between the dopaminergic system and VEGF secretion in luteinized GCs was evaluated. Archived human ovaries were immunostained to characterize D2 expression. Setting University affiliated infertility center. Patient(s) Premenopausal women and egg donors. Intervention(s) Luteinized GCs were cultured with the D2-ag cabergoline. Human o…
