Data-driven decision support (DDDS) provides insight for decision makers by exploring and extracting underlying patterns within a dataset. This thesis covers the process of DDDS in reducing driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) offenses by introducing proposed prison sentences. This study explored the perceptions of deputy directors about their leadership in Early Childhood Education (ECE) centres in Finland. Our aim was to look beyond task distribution and understand how deputy directors enacted leadership with their colleagues. Six deputy directors employed in one municipality in Finland participated in this study. Interviewed individually, the participants discussed how they themselves perceived being in a leadership position and what their leadership looked like in practice. Business owners, employees, and firm performance

The novel Finnish Longitudinal OWNer-Employer-Employee (FLOWN) database was used to analyze how the characteristics of owners and employees relate to firm performance as determined by labor productivity, survival, and employment growth. Focusing on the role of the employment history, the results show that previous experience in a high-productivity firm strongly predicts high productivity and probability of survival for the entrepreneur’s new firm. This can be interpreted as evidence of knowledge spillovers through labor mobility of both the owners and the employees. Technological and organizational capital : Where complementarities exist

This study analyzes the complementarities between technological and organizational capital within enterprises. Different components of technological and organizational capital exert distinct—and often opposed—forces on each other. Our empirical results show that greater employee voice promotes firm productivity when combined with information technology, but harms firm productivity when combined with communication technology. More skilled, better paid : labour-market returns to postsecondary vocational education

Outside the USA, relatively little is known about the labour-market returns to postsecondary vocational (or polytechnic) education. Yet, polytechnics in Europe are distinct from US community colleges. This paper focuses on the labour-market returns to polytechnic attendance in Finland, where polytechnics are representative of many European countries. Using matching methods and longitudinal administrative data, we find that, compared to individuals with no postsecondary education, students who attend polytechnics have higher annual earnings of €3,300 to €3,700 and employment gains of 2.5 to 6.6 percentage points 10 years after the entry decision. This thesis examined trust inside a political organization as well the relation between trust and creativity. The thesis is a case study of the Finnish Centre Party Parliamentary Group. The research sought answers for the questions how professional politicians (members of the parliament) experience trust inside the party they are members of, and whether trust in a political organization brings added value for the organization. The combined use of theoretical and mathematical methods in the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance data has greatly increased the ability to interpret even the most complex spectra reported for doublet state inorganic main group radicals. This personal account summarizes the theoretical basis of such an approach and provides an in-depth discussion of some recent illustrative examples of the utilization of this methodology in practical applications. Becoming Politically Active: Life Courses and the Formation of Capitals among Young People of Migrant Origin in Finland

This article focuses on the life courses of young people of migrant origin who are active in civic and political fields in Finland. The aim is to analyse, from the micro-level life course perspective, the issues in their lives that have helped them to become active. The article draws on empirical data collected using participatory methods. Four young people of migrant origin participated in the research process and contributed to the data analysis. The theoretical framework consists of Bourdieusian concepts of political habitus and emotional, cultural and social capital.
