Abstract In the first part of this paper we study the regularity properties of a wide class of maximal operators. These results are used to show that the spherical maximal operator is continuous W 1 , p ( R n ) ↦ W 1 , p ( R n ) , when p > n n − 1 . Other given applications include fractional maximal operators and maximal singular integrals. On the other hand, we show that the restricted Hardy–Littlewood maximal operator M λ , where the supremum is taken over the cubes with radii greater than λ > 0 , is bounded from L p ( R n ) to W 1 , p ( R n ) but discontinuous.

Automatic detection of hemangiomas using unsupervised segmentation of regions of interest

In this paper we compare the performances of three automatic methods of identifying hemangioma regions in images: 1) unsupervised segmentation using the Otsu method, 2) Fuzzy C-means clustering (FCM) and 3) an improved region growing algorithm based on FCM (RG-FCM). For each image, the starting point of the algorithms is a rectangular region of interest (ROI) containing the hemangioma. For computing the performances of each method, the ROIs had been manually labeled in 2 classes: pixels of hemangioma and pixels of non-hemangioma. Neurons at primary visual cortex (V1) in humans and other species are edge filters organized in orientation maps. In these maps, neurons with similar orientation preference are clustered together in iso-orientation domains. These maps have two fundamental properties: (1) retinotopy, i.e. correspondence between displacements at the image space and displacements at the cortical surface, and (2) a trade-off between good coverage of the visual field with all orientations and continuity of iso-orientation domains in the cortical space. A continued fraction based approach for the Two-photon Quantum Rabi Model

We study the Two Photon Quantum Rabi Model by way of its spectral functions and survival probabilities. This approach allows numerical precision with large truncation numbers, and thus exploration of the spectral collapse. We provide independent checks and calibration of the numerical results by studying an exactly solvable case and comparing the essential qualitative structure of the spectral functions. We stress that the large time limit of the survival probability provides us with an indicator of spectral collapse, and propose a technique for the detection of this signal in the current and upcoming quantum simulations of the model. Transmembrane (TM) signaling is a key process of membrane-bound sensor kinases. The C4-dicarboxylate (fumarate) responsive sensor kinase DcuS of Escherichia coli is anchored by TM helices TM1 and TM2 in the membrane. Signal transmission across the membrane relies on the piston-type movement of the periplasmic part of TM2. To define the role of TM2 in TM signaling, we use oxidative Cys cross-linking to demonstrate that TM2 extends over the full distance of the membrane and forms a stable TM homodimer in both the inactive and fumarate-activated state of DcuS.
