Mitochondrial bioenergetic pathways in blood leukocyte transcriptome decrease after intensive weight loss but are rescued following weight regain in …
2021
Prolonged periods of energy deficit leading to weight loss induce metabolic adaptations resulting in reduced energy expenditure, but the mechanisms for energy conservation are incompletely understood. We examined 42 healthy athletic females (age 27.5 +/- 4.0 years, body mass index 23.4 +/- 1.7 kg/m(2)) who volunteered into either a group dieting for physique competition (n = 25) or a control group (n = 17). The diet group substantially reduced their energy intake and moderately increased exercise levels to induce loss of fat mass that was regained during a voluntary weight regain period. The control group maintained their typical lifestyle habits and body mass as instructed. From the diet g…
Tarve laihduttaa : kyse ei ollutkaan pelkistä kiloista
2016
Jokinen, Emmi (2016). Tarve laihduttaa ― kyse ei ollutkaan pelkistä kiloista. Liikuntakasva- tuksen laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, liikuntapedagogiikan pro gradu –tutkielma, 56 sivua, 1 liite.
Infant and childhood growth and frailty in old age : the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study
2018
BackgroundEvidence from life course studies highlights the importance of infant and childhood growth as risk factors for adulthood chronic diseases.MethodsIn this sub-study of the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study, we studied 1078 individuals who had both information on body size from birth to 12 years of age and who were assessed for frailty according to the Fried criteria at the mean age of 71 years.ResultsGreater BMI gain between 2 and 11 years in boys was associated with frailty in old age (age-adjusted RRR 2.36, 95% CI 1.21, 4.63). No similar associations were observed in girls.ConclusionsMen who were frail in old age experienced accelerated BMI gain in childhood compared with those men who …
Rapid growth predisposes broilers to necrotic enteritis
2019
Over the past 50 years, intentional genetic selection within the broiler industry has led to major improvements in both body weight gain (BWG) and feed conversion efficiency. Next to its economic advantages, enhancing BWG can increase the risk of metabolic and skeletal disorders. The aim of this study was to examine whether higher BWG is a predisposing factor for broiler necrotic enteritis. In this study, 300 broilers were challenged with Clostridium perfringens using a well-established, previously described challenge model. It was found that birds with higher body weight (BW) and BWG before challenge were predisposed to develop more severe necrotic enteritis lesions. After challenge, the a…

Does the increase in body weight change the knee and ankle joint loading in walking and running?
2015
Previous obese studies showed that there is a correlation of weight to joint load in the knee joint during walking. In load-carrying studies, there are several studies but no consistent findings in the knee joint loads in walking and running. Our aim was to investigate how the joint load changes in body weight gaining, using added vest that was 10% of the body weight to mimic the conditions. We used Vicon eight-camera system and five force platforms with inverse dynamics to calculate the peak ground reaction forces(GRFs), joint angle, joint moments, and patellofemoral contact forces(PFCF), patellafemoral stress(PFS), peak patellofemoral tendon force(PTF) and peak Achilles tendon force (ATF)…
