The seventh Quaderno Digitale di Archeologia Postclassica contains the results of the researches conducted by the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Palermo and by the Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra in the Early Christian catacomb of Villagrazia di Carini during the years 2013-2014. Emma Vitale and Fortunatina Vaccaro present the stratigraphic excavation carried out in the south-eastern district of the cemetery, while, in the third study of the book, Giuseppe Falzone analyzes two painted funerary inscriptions on the interior walls of Byzantine burials brought to light, in recent years, along the Decumanus Maximus of Lilybaeum.
Archaeometric characterization of late Archaic ceramic from Erice (Sicily) aimed to provenance determination

A set of 20 ceramic samples was autoptically selected from the numerous findings recovered from the stratigraphic excavations of the late Archaic city walls of Erice (western Sicily), in order to be analyzed with archaeometric techniques for provenance determination. The excavations were recently carried out as part of a research project funded by the Freie Universiat Berlin and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. Specifically, the ceramic material consists of tableware with a painted geometric decoration of presumed local/regional production, as well as apparently imported black-glazed pottery. Abstract The ‘Euphrates Monochrome Painted Ware’ (henceforth EMPW) is a ceramic style attested in the Middle Euphrates region in northern Syria at the beginning of the Early Bronze Age, ca. 2900–2700 BCE. [EN] Rock art documentation is a complex task that should be carried out in a complete, rigorous and exhaustive way, in order to take particular actions that allow stakeholders to preserve the archaeological sites under constant deterioration. The pigments used in prehistoric paintings present high light sensitivity and rigorous scientific color degradation mapping is not usually undertaken in overall archaeological sites. This contribution is focused on a specific class of indigenous Archaic pottery (sixth and fifth century BC) with matt-painted geometric decoration that was recovered in large quantities in the excavations at Entella, an indigenous site located in western Sicily. The site of Entella was strategically considerable in this part of Sicily, controlling the north-south routes running along the river Belice. Abstract Nanolime dispersed in 2-propanol was extensively used for the consolidation of wall paintings. The knowledge of the advances of this methodology dealing with all the possible effects associated with the nanolime new material in conservation is fundamental to assess and improve the technique.
