Personality traits in subjects at risk for unipolar major depression: A family study perspective

1992

Particular patterns of personality (e.g., introversion, neuroticism, obsessionality) have been found to be associated with unipolar depression by a large number of investigators; recent prospective studies have stressed neuroticism as a premorbid risk factor for depression. This study examines whether similar patterns of personality are found in relatives of affective disorder patients and of controls. First-degree relatives of normal controls and of subjects with primary unipolar depression were studied using the Munich Personality Test. Relatives in remission from an episode of unipolar depression had clearly higher levels of neuroticism and rigidity and lower levels of extraversion than …

The impact of coexistent diabetes on the prevalence of coronary heart disease.

1997

Abstract The increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease in diabetic population has been well documented, but the prevalent mechanism of this susceptibility is still only partly explained. We compared the impact of diabetes on ischemic heart disease in patients hospitalized in a public general hospital over a 10-year period. The prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD) was consistently higher among diabetic population [namely, among non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients] when compared with the nondiabetic population. The prevalence was similar in both genders, increasing with age, and was independent from body-mass index, history of smoking, metabolic control, o…

NOA-05 phase 2 trial of procarbazine and lomustine therapy in gliomatosis cerebri.

2011

The NOA-05 multicenter trial was performed to analyze the efficacy of primary chemotherapy with procarbazine and lomustine (PC) in patients with gliomatosis cerebri (GC) and to define clinical, imaging, and molecular factors influencing outcome.Thirty-five patients with previously untreated GC were treated with up to six 56-day courses of 110mg/m(2) lomustine on day 1 and 60mg/m(2) procarbazine on days 8 to 21. The primary endpoint was the rate of patients without therapy failure (defined as progressive disease, death from any cause, or termination of PC therapy before the end of course 4) at 8 months after the beginning of PC chemotherapy. The failure-free survival rate at 8 months was 50.3…

Evoked otoacoustic emissions and pure tone threshold audiometry in patients receiving cisplatinum therapy.

1993

Eight children and young adults with cancer were evaluated serially using pure tone audiometry as well as registration of click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAE) 1 day prior to therapy as well as after various numbers of doses of cisplatinum. A reduction of EOAE-amplitudes following cisplatinum therapy was observed in all patients. This reduction tended to recover after the end of cisplatinum administration. Since EOAE are believed to result from cochlear bio-mechanical processes, the reduced emissions are interpreted as signs of cochlear dysfunction. We conclude, that EOAE testing may be a simple, non-invasive method that may detect early, transient functional impairment of hearing due t…

The UCP2 -866 G>A promoter region polymorphism is associated with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

2015

Background & Aims Uncoupling protein 2 - UCP2 - regulates mitochondrial lipid fluxes and reactive oxygen species production by the respiratory chain. The −866 G>A UCP2 promoter region polymorphism has been linked to insulin resistance and lipid metabolism. The aim of this study was to assess whether the −866 G>A UCP2 polymorphism predisposes to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in patients at risk, and the relationship with lipid metabolism and hepatic UCP2 expression. Methods We considered 688 Italian patients who underwent liver biopsy for suspected NASH, and 232 healthy controls. The UCP2 −866 G>A polymorphism was determined by allele specific oligonucleotide probes, hepatic UCP2 mRNA levels …

Modified fixation free plug technique using a new 3D multilamellar implant for inguinal hernia repair: a retrospective study of a single operator cas…

2013

Aim: Implant fixation, mesh shrinkage and poor quality of tissue ingrowth are unresolved issues in modern hernia repair. Many complications reported in the literature such as bleeding, nerve entrapment, hematoma, pain, discomfort, and testicular complications, are considered to be a direct results of implant fixation. This article describes the outcomes of a procedure carried out using a handcrafted implant that addresses the issues consequent to point fixation. Methods: This was a retrospective study on the short, medium and long-term results of placing a-modified, fixation free three-dimensional polypropylene implant in 61 patients who underwent inguinal hernia repair using a novel delive…

New mesh shape and improved implantation procedure to simplify and standardize open ventral hernia repair: a preliminary report.

2010

Introduction Issues in ventral hernia repair are represented by the need for mesh fixation and how to assure a sufficient mesh overlap of the defect. Aiming to resolve these problems, this study describes a modified technique for ventral and incisional hernia repair based upon a newly developed mesh with a special design. This new type of implant allows broader coverage of the abdominal wall and results in tension- and fixation-free repair. Materials and methods A unique geometrically shaped mesh consisting of a large central body and radiating arms was used to repair ventral or incisional hernia. The mesh was intended not to be point-fixated. The friction of the straps passing through the …

Tentacle-shaped mesh for fixation-free repair of umbilical hernias

2019

Purpose: Mesh fixation and broad overlap represent an open issue in umbilical hernia repair. A proprietary-designed implant with tentacle straps at its boundary has been developed to ensure a suture-free repair and a broader coverage of the abdominal wall. The study describes the results of umbilical hernia procedures carried out with the tentacle-shaped implant and the related surgical technique. Methods: A proprietary tentacle-shaped flat mesh having a central body with integrated radiating arms at its edge was used to repair large umbilical hernias in 62 patients. The implant was placed in preperitoneal sublay. The friction of the straps, crossing the abdominal wall thanks to a special n…
