Geochemical Interactions of Plutonium with Opalinus Clay Studied by Spatially Resolved Synchrotron Radiation Techniques
2017
Plutonium plays an important role within nuclear waste materials because of its long half-life and high radiotoxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate with high spatial resolution the reactivity of the more oxidized forms of Pu(V,VI) within Opalinus Clay (OPA) rock, a heterogeneous, natural argillaceous rock considered as a potential repository host. A combination of synchrotron based X-ray microprobe and bulk techniques was used to study the spatial distribution and molecular speciation of Pu within OPA after diffusion and sorption processes. Microscopic chemical images revealed a pronounced impact of geochemical heterogeneities concerning the reactivity of the natural barrier mat…
Collaborative Management in Norwegian Municipalities: Do Middle Managers Make a Difference?
2022
Norway is an example of the Nordic model in which the local level is of fundamental importance. However, the municipalities are relatively small and increasingly subject to decentralisation of their activities. To compensate for scale disadvantages, a mixture of collaborative activities is pursued in order to build system capacity. Paradoxically, little is known about collaboration among key stakeholders. This article makes a contribution to reducing this knowledge gap by focusing on mid-level managers and municipal departments. This research is empirically underpinned by a cross sectional survey of middle managers in 64 municipalities in Norway (N = 1354) and presents, for the first time, …
Quaternary structure of the European spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) 1x6-mer hemocyanin from cryoEM and amino acid sequence data.
2002
Abstract Arthropod hemocyanins are large respiratory proteins that are composed of up to 48 subunits (8×6-mer) in the 75 kDa range. A 3D reconstruction of the 1×6-mer hemocyanin from the European spiny lobster Palinurus elephas has been performed from 9970 single particles using cryoelectron microscopy. An 8 A resolution of the hemocyanin 3D reconstruction has been obtained from about 600 final class averages. Visualisation of structural elements such as α-helices has been achieved. An amino acid sequence alignment shows the high sequence identity (>80%) of the hemocyanin subunits from the European spiny lobster P. elephas and the American spiny lobster Panulirus interruptus . Comparison of…
Stereoselective Synthesis of Microcarpalide
2002
The first total synthesis of the naturally occurring nonenolide, microcarpalide, is described. The key step in the synthesis was the ring-closing metathesis of a dienic ester prepared in turn by coupling an acid and an alcohol stereoselectively synthesized from (S,S)-tartaric acid and (R)-glycidol, respectively. Development of Municipal Solid Waste Management
2015
This paper is based on an empirical work done by author on a series of case studies such us document studies and analyzing the best practices examples. The objective of this research is to find out barriers to reach regional waste management plan demands in three municipalities: Salacgriva, Saulkrasti and Ikskile. Author gives proposal with some recommendations for development of municipal waste management as well. There are several views and attitudes of local stakeholders such us municipality, waste producers, waste collectors and mediators on how to manage collection and transportation of solid waste in practice as well as on public involvement in the process.. Passivity of stakeholders …

Alignment of strategy and structure in local government
2020
Strategic positioning and structural alignment in the public sector is a neglected area of research. This paper analyses the strategic positions of prospectors, defenders and reactors and structural alignment in Norwegian municipalities. Top managers responding to a survey perceived that the municipalities did align their organizational structures to the strategic positions for prospectors and defenders, but not for reactors, as hypothesized, but these relationships were modest. The top managers often found it difficult to provide consistent responses on their organizations’ choices of strategic positions. The authors show that many Norwegian municipalities have minimal alignment of their o…
Nitric oxide production in tobacco leaf cells: a generalized stress response?
2003
The function of nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous free radical emitted by many plants, is incompletely understood. In the present study the hypothesis that NO generation, like that of the reactive oxygen species, occurs as a general response to different environmental cues was tested. Leaf peels and mesophyll cell suspensions of Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthi were loaded with the NO-specific fluorophore, diaminofluorescein, and subjected to an abiotic stressor. Light stress and mechanical injury had no apparent effect on NO production. In contrast, high temperatures, hyperosmotic stress, salinity and epi-illumination in a microscope all led to rapid surges in NO-induced fluorescence. The fluoresce…
