Data from: Phylogenomics of Lophotrochozoa with consideration of systematic error
2021
Phylogenomic studies have improved understanding of deep metazoan phylogeny and show promise for resolving incongruences among analyses based on limited numbers of loci. One region of the animal tree that has been especially difficult to resolve, even with phylogenomic approaches, is relationships within Lophotrochozoa (the animal clade that includes molluscs, annelids, and flatworms among others). Lack of resolution in phylogenomic analyses could be due to insufficient phylogenetic signal, limitations in taxon and/or gene sampling, or systematic error. Here, we investigated why lophotrochozoan phylogeny has been such a difficult question to answer by identifying and reducing sources of sys…

Black Hole Entropy Quantization
2006
Ever since the pioneer works of Bekenstein and Hawking, black hole entropy has been known to have a quantum origin. Furthermore, it has long been argued by Bekenstein that entropy should be quantized in discrete (equidistant) steps given its identification with horizon area in (semi-)classical general relativity and the properties of area as an adiabatic invariant. This lead to the suggestion that black hole area should also be quantized in equidistant steps to account for the discrete black hole entropy. Here we shall show that loop quantum gravity, in which area is {\it not} quantized in equidistant steps can nevertheless be consistent with Bekenstein's equidistant entropy proposal in a s…
Is There a Paradox of Adaptation in Immigrant Children and Youth across Europe?: A Literature Review
2018
This review examines how well children of immigrants in Europe are doing in terms of educational, psychological, and behavioral outcomes. Based on theory and research in developmental, social and acculturation psychology fields, we explore the immigrant paradox (e.g., first-generation immigrant children show better adaptation in comparison to their native and second-generation counterparts) and migration morbidity (e.g., immigrants display less favorable outcomes than natives) in 102 studies conducted in 14 European countries. We conclude that theoretical assumptions of developmental (e.g., promoting context in families, schools, neighborhoods), social (e.g., intercultural behaviors and att…

Coping with the Innovation Paradoxes: The Challenge for a New Game Leadership
2013
Abstract In times of crisis the paradoxes that are inevitably linked to the innovation process become even more pronounced. After explaining some of the key innovation paradoxes we link them to the organization model that was developed by Edith Penrose. We learn that many of the paradoxes can be explained by the difficulty to balance entrepreneurship and management as organizations grow and evolve. Next we analyze why the vitality is gone in so many of our organizations, what should be done in order to restore the vitality and how new game leadership can contribute. Finally we look at how new game leadership has to be integrated in today's business and on the role that strategic leaders can…
The Obesity Paradox Predicts the Second Wave of COVID-19 to Be Severe in Western Countries.
2021
While COVID-19 infection and mortality rates are soaring in Western countries, Southeast Asian countries have successfully avoided the second wave of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic despite high population density. We provide a biochemical hypothesis for the connection between low COVID-19 incidence, mortality rates, and high visceral adiposity in Southeast Asian populations. The SARS-CoV-2 virus uses angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a gateway into the human body. Although the highest expression levels of ACE2 are found in people’s visceral adipose tissue in Southeast Asia, this does not necessarily make them vulnerable to COVID-19. Hypothetically, high levels of visceral adiposity cause s…
A Personal LPWAN Remote Monitoring System
2021
Firefighters are equipped with an immobility detector device also called the Personal Alert Safety System (PASS) that is integrated into the user's Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). If a firefighter remains motionless for a certain period of time, a loud audible alert is triggered to notify the Firefighter Assist and Search Team (FAST) deployed in the area of intervention that the wearer of the PASS device is in trouble and in need of rescue. However, this device is not reliable enough since it triggers frequently false positives which lead to developing a tolerance for sounding alarms among the crew. As a consequence, they do not seem to be concerned about it as they should and th…
The Myth of Eros in Michael Field’s Sapphic Project: from a New Materialism to a Tragic Determinism
2020
Obesity paradox in peripheral artery disease
2019
Background & aims: Previous studies have suggested an obesity survival paradox in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). We investigated the influence of obesity and underweight on adverse in-hospital outcomes in PAD. Methods: Patients diagnosed with PAD based on ICD-code I70.2 of the German nationwide database were stratified for obesity, underweight and a reference group with normal-weight/over-weight and compared regarding adverse in-hospital outcomes. Results: Between 01/2005-12/2015, 5,611,484 inpatients (64.8% males) were diagnosed with PAD; of those, 8.9% were coded with obesity and 0.3% with underweight. Obese patients were younger (70 (IQR 63/76) vs. 73 (66/80) years, P < 0…
