An output-only stochastic parametric approach for the identification of linear and nonlinear structures under random base excitations: Advances and c…
2014
In this paper a time domain output-only Dynamic Identification approach for Civil Structures (DICS) first formulated some years ago is reviewed and presented in a more generalized form. The approach in question, suitable for multi- and single-degrees-of-freedom systems, is based on the statistical moments and on the correlation functions of the response to base random excitations. The solving equations are obtained by applying the Itô differential stochastic calculus to some functions of the response. In the previous version ([21] Cavaleri, 2006; [22] Benfratello et al., 2009), the DICS method was based on the use of two classes of models (Restricted Potential Models and Linear Mass Proport…
Positive solutions for singular double phase problems
2021
Abstract We study the existence of positive solutions for a class of double phase Dirichlet equations which have the combined effects of a singular term and of a parametric superlinear term. The differential operator of the equation is the sum of a p-Laplacian and of a weighted q-Laplacian ( q p ) with discontinuous weight. Using the Nehari method, we show that for all small values of the parameter λ > 0 , the equation has at least two positive solutions.
Analytic high-order Douglas–Kroll–Hess electric field gradients
2007
In this work we present a comprehensive study of analytical electric field gradients in hydrogen halides calculated within the high-order Douglas-Kroll-Hess (DKH) scalar-relativistic approach taking picture-change effects analytically into account. We demonstrate the technical feasibility and reliability of a high-order DKH unitary transformation for the property integrals. The convergence behavior of the DKH property expansion is discussed close to the basis set limit and conditions ensuring picture-change-corrected results are determined. Numerical results are presented, which show that the DKH property expansion converges rapidly toward the reference values provided by four-component met…
A blended-learning programme regarding professional ethics in physiotherapy students.
2018
Background: In the university context, assessing students’ attitude, knowledge and opinions when applying an innovative methodological approach to teach professional ethics becomes fundamental to know if the used approach is enough motivating for students. Research objective: To assess the effect of a blended-learning model, based on professional ethics and related to clinical practices, on physiotherapy students’ attitude, knowledge and opinions towards learning professional ethics. Research design and participants: A simple-blind clinical trial was performed (NLM identifier NCT03241693) (control group, n = 64; experimental group, n = 65). Both groups followed clinical practices for 8 mont…
Crack growth in fillet welded steel joints subjected to membrane and bending loading modes
2020
Abstract The present paper presents the results from extensive studies of the fatigue damage evolution in fillet welded steel joints subjected to Constant Amplitude (CA) stress under membrane and bending loading modes. The welded joints in question are F class details (category 71) with plate thicknesses ranging from 25 to 32 mm. The steel quality is a medium strength carbon manganese steel. Crack growth histories for the shallow semi-elliptical shaped cracks emanating from the weld toe are obtained by an Alternating Current Potential Drop (ACPD) technique. These growth histories are presented in detail and modelled by Linear Elastic Facture Mechanics (LEFM). The calculations follow the rec…
Thalamic Network Oscillations Synchronize Ontogenetic Columns in the Newborn Rat Barrel Cortex
2013
Neocortical areas are organized in columns, which form the basic structural and functional modules of intracortical information processing. Using voltage-sensitive dye imaging and simultaneous multi-channel extracellular recordings in the barrel cortex of newborn rats in vivo, we found that spontaneously occurring and whisker stimulation-induced gamma bursts followed by longer lasting spindle bursts were topographically organized in functional cortical columns already at the day of birth. Gamma bursts synchronized a cortical network of 300-400 µm in diameter and were coherent with gamma activity recorded simultaneously in the thalamic ventral posterior medial (VPM) nucleus. Cortical gamma b…

Construction of 3D Triangles on Dupin Cyclides
2011
This paper considers the conversion of the parametric Bézier surfaces, classically used in CAD-CAM, into patched of a class of non-spherical degree 4 algebraic surfaces called Dupin cyclides, and the definition of 3D triangle with circular edges on Dupin cyclides. Dupin cyclides was discovered by the French mathematician Pierre-Charles Dupin at the beginning of the 19th century. A Dupin cyclide has one parametric equation, two implicit equations, and a set of circular lines of curvature. The authors use the properties of these surfaces to prove that three families of circles (meridian arcs, parallel arcs, and Villarceau circles) can be computed on every Dupin cyclide. A geometric algorithm …
Linear Oscillator with Time-Dependent Frequency
2001
Here is another important example of a path integral calculation, namely the time-dependent oscillator whose Lagrangian is given by $$\displaystyle{ L = \frac{m} {2} \dot{x}^{2} -\frac{m} {2} W(t)x^{2}\;. }$$ (21.1) Since L is quadratic, we again expand around a classical solution so that later on we will be dealing again with the calculation of the following path integral: $$\displaystyle{ \int _{x(t_{i})\,=\,0}^{x(t_{f})\,=\,0}[dx(t)]\text{exp}\left \{ \frac{\text{i}} {\hslash }\,\frac{m} {2} \int _{t_{i}}^{t_{f} }dt\left [\left (\frac{dx} {dt} \right )^{\!2} - W(t)x^{2}\right ]\right \}\;. }$$ (21.2) Using \(x(t_{i}) = 0 = x(t_{f}),\) we can integrate by parts and obtain $$\displaystyle{…
