Geometry and quasisymmetric parametrization of Semmes spaces
2011
We consider decomposition spaces R 3 /G that are manifold factors and admit defining sequences consisting of cubes-with-handles of finite type. Metrics on R 3 /G constructed via modular embeddings of R 3 /G into a Euclidean space promote the controlled topology to a controlled geometry. The quasisymmetric parametrizability of the metric space R 3 /G×R m by R 3+m for any m ≥ 0 imposes quantitative topological constraints, in terms of the circulation and the growth of the cubes-with-handles, on the defining sequences for R 3 /G. We give a necessary condition and a sufficient condition for the existence of such a parametrization. The necessary condition answers negatively a question of Heinone…
Modelling drift of pelagic offspring: the importance of egg surveys in providing a realistic model initialization
2015
Abstract Having valid information about the location and dynamics of biological processes is important for coastal management. In this context modelling, the pelagic drift of early life stages has been shown to be an important tool for understanding the spatial scale of population dynamics in marine systems. Often simulated particles are released in hypothetical quantities at assumed spawning grounds with no or few field data to guide the model parametrization. In this study, we combine high-resolution field data and state-of-the-art oceanographic modelling and use a probabilistic approach to construct kernel density distributions of the dispersal of pelagic fish eggs. Specifically, the pot…
Measurement of the low-energy antideuteron inelastic cross section
2020
In this Letter, we report the first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antideuteron-nucleus interactions at low particle momenta, covering a range of $0.3 \leq p < 4$ GeV/$c$. The measurement is carried out using p-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV, recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC and utilizing the detector material as an absorber for antideuterons and antiprotons. The extracted raw primary antiparticle-to-particle ratios are compared to the results from detailed ALICE simulations based on the GEANT4 toolkit for the propagation of antiparticles through the detector material. The analysis of th…
Uniformization of two-dimensional metric surfaces
2014
We establish uniformization results for metric spaces that are homeomorphic to the Euclidean plane or sphere and have locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure. Applying the geometric definition of quasiconformality, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for such spaces to be QC equivalent to the Euclidean plane, disk, or sphere. Moreover, we show that if such a QC parametrization exists, then the dilatation can be bounded by 2. As an application, we show that the Euclidean upper bound for measures of balls is a sufficient condition for the existence of a 2-QC parametrization. This result gives a new approach to the Bonk-Kleiner theorem on parametrizations of Ahlfors 2-regular spheres by qu…
Measurement of the average shape of longitudinal profiles of cosmic-ray air showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory
2019
The profile of the longitudinal development of showers produced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays carries information related to the interaction properties of the primary particles with atmospheric nuclei. In this work, we present the first measurement of the average shower profile in traversed atmospheric depth at the Pierre Auger Observatory. The shapes of profiles are well reproduced by the Gaisser-Hillas parametrization within the range studied, for E>10 17.8 eV .A detailed analysis of the systematic uncertainties is performed using ten years of data and a full detector simulation. The average shape is quantified using two variables related to the width and asymmetry of the profile, and …
Self-Consistent Charge Density-Functional Tight-Binding Parametrization for Pt–Ru Alloys
2017
We present a self-consistent charge density-functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) parametrization for PtRu alloys, which is developed by employing a training set of alloy cluster energies and forces obtained from Kohn-Sham density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. Extensive simulations of a testing set of PtRu alloy nanoclusters show that this SCC-DFTB scheme is capable of capturing cluster formation energies with high accuracy relative to DFT calculations. The new SCC-DFTB parametrization is employed within a genetic algorithm to search for global minima of PtRu clusters in the range of 13-81 atoms and the emergence of Ru-core/Pt-shell structures at intermediate alloy compositions, consi…
Global Estimation of Biophysical Variables from Google Earth Engine Platform
2018
This paper proposes a processing chain for the derivation of global Leaf Area Index (LAI), Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR), Fraction Vegetation Cover (FVC), and Canopy water content (CWC) maps from 15-years of MODIS data exploiting the capabilities of the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform. The retrieval chain is based on a hybrid method inverting the PROSAIL radiative transfer model (RTM) with Random forests (RF) regression. A major feature of this work is the implementation of a retrieval chain exploiting the GEE capabilities using global and climate data records (CDR) of both MODIS surface reflectance and LAI/FAPAR datasets allowing the global estim…
Topological canal foliations
2019
Regular canal surfaces of $\mathbb{R}^3$ or $\mathbb{S}^3$ admit foliations by circles: the characteristic circles of the envelope. In order to build a foliation of $\mathbb{S}^3$ with leaves being canal surfaces, one has to relax the condition “canal” a little (“weak canal condition”) in order to accept isolated umbilics. Here, we define a topological condition which generalizes this “weak canal” condition imposed on leaves, and classify the foliations of compact orientable 3-manifolds we can obtain this way.
Shell-model computed cross sections for charged-current scattering of astrophysical neutrinos off 40Ar
2018
Charged-current (anti)neutrino-$^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$ cross sections for astrophysical neutrinos have been calculated. The initial and final nuclear states were calculated using the nuclear shell model. The folded solar-neutrino scattering cross section was found to be $1.78(23)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}42}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$, which is higher than what the previous papers have reported. The contributions from the ${1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ multipoles were found to be significant at supernova-neutrino energies, confirming the random-phase approximation (RPA) result of a previous study. The effects of neutrino flavor conve…
