Combined strength and endurance exercise induced fatigue and recovery

2012

Muscular fatigue is usually defined as the inability to maintain a given exercise intensity or adequate muscle force and therefore maximal isometric force, neural activation and fast force production capacity have often used determinants of acute fatigue. The purpose of the present study was to measure the acute effects of combined strength and endurance exercise on force production, muscle activation and work economy. In addition this study investigated the rate of recovery comparing the active and passive recovery models and the association of the initial fitness levels of subjects. 16 (27 ± 4 years old) male reservists performed combined strength (5x10x70%RM leg-press) and endurance (5x1…

Modeling of differential admittance behaviour of thin amorphous semiconducting film

2012

The understanding of the electronic properties of thin oxide film is an important step toward the understanding of the mechanisms of film dissolution and breakdown as well as for their application in the field of electrolytic capacitors and solar energy conversion. From this point of view the correct location of the characteristic energy levels (flat band potential, Ufb, and conduction (valence) band edge EC (EV)), of a passive film/electrolyte junction is the preliminary task for a deeper understanding of the mechanism of charge transfer at oxide/electrolyte interface. At this aim the most frequently employed method to locate such characteristic energy levels of semiconductor oxide/electro…

Mushrooms as biomonitors of heavy metals contamination in forest areas

2018

The aim of the research was to assess the level of contamination with heavy metals (manganese, iron, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium and lead) in two forest areas selected in different places in Poland: the first one in the Swietokrzyskie Province (forests of the Staporkow Forest Division) and the second one in the Opolskie Province (forests of the Kup Forest Division). The degree of contamination of these forest areas with analytes was found using edible large-fruited mushrooms naturally occurring there - the research was carried out using passive biomonitoring method. Heavy metals in mushrooms (separately in stems and hats) as well as in soil samples were determined by atomic absorption spe…

Auditory perceptual learning : evidence from electrophysiological recordings in rodents and humans

2018

Yllättävät muutokset äänimaailmassa viestittävät yleensä selviytymisen kannalta tärkeistä vihjeistä, joten niiden nopea ja automaattinen havaitseminen on tärkeää. Tietoinen harjoittelu mahdollistaa havainto-oppimisen ja oppimisen seurauksena hermostoon muodostuu uusia muistijälkiä. Varhaisessa kehityksessä herkkyyskauden aikana muistijälkien muodostuminen, ihmisellä erityisesti puheäänille, on automaattista, eikä siihen vaadita tietoista harjoittelua.

Maternal antibody transmission and breeding densities in the Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus

2004

1. The offspring of avian species, especially those of colonial breeders, are exposed to a number of pathogens immediately after birth. The chick's immune system is, at that early stage still immature and inefficient. As a consequence, diseases can have a strong impact on chick survival.2. The ability of mothers to transmit passive immunity in terms of antibodies of their own acquired immunity to their chicks is probably an essential pathway to enhance the chick survival. Since the production of antibodies is costly, females are expected to adjust the transmission of passive immunity to the local disease environment.3. We found that in Black-headed Gulls (Larus ridibundus L.) yolk antibody …

Cortical networks show characteristic recruitment patterns after somatosensory stimulation by pneumatically evoked repetitive hand movements in newbo…

2022

Abstract Controlled assessment of functional cortical networks is an unmet need in the clinical research of noncooperative subjects, such as infants. We developed an automated, pneumatic stimulation method to actuate naturalistic movements of an infant’s hand, as well as an analysis pipeline for assessing the elicited electroencephalography (EEG) responses and related cortical networks. Twenty newborn infants with perinatal asphyxia were recruited, including 7 with mild-to-moderate hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Statistically significant corticokinematic coherence (CKC) was observed between repetitive hand movements and EEG in all infants, peaking near the contralateral sensorimotor…

Speculations on the impact of catastrophic subduction initiation on the Earth System

2016

Abstract The physics of subduction initiation can be studied with numerical models of lithosphere dynamics, to the extent where we can now test the potential consequences of a catastrophic subduction initiation event on the Earth System. The South American Atlantic passive margin is here used to show that, once subduction has catastrophically initiated there, a major geodynamic reconfiguration of the South American plate (SAm) is likely to take place: (1) compression in the east will be inverted to extension, because ridge push will be replaced by subduction rollback and trench retreat; (2) compression in the west will be inverted to extension due to absolute rollback; and (3) without buttr…

Contrasting stress fields on correlating margins of the South Atlantic

2015

Made available in DSpace on 2018-12-11T17:25:39Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2015-01-01 The passiveness of passive continental margins across the globe is currently under debate since several studies have shown that these margins may experience a variety of stress states and undergo significant vertical movement post-breakup. Of special interest is the South Atlantic, because the bounding continents have very different recent geological histories, with Africa experiencing continental rifting whereas South America is influenced by subduction on the Pacific side. It is not clear to what extent the Atlantic continental margins are subject to the same stresses and vertical …

U-Pb dating of middle Eocene-middle Pleistocene multiple tectonic pulses in the Alpine foreland

2021

Foreland fold-and-thrust belts record long-lived tectonic-sedimentary activity, from passive margin sedimentation, flexuring, and further involvement into wedge accretion ahead of an advancing orogen. Therefore, dating fault activity is fundamental for plate movement reconstruction, resource exploration, or earthquake hazard assessment. Here, we report U-Pb ages of syntectonic calcite mineralizations from four thrusts and three tear faults sampled, at the regional scale, across the Jura fold-and-thrust belt in the northwestern Alpine foreland (eastern France). Four regional tectonic phases are recognized in the middle Eocene-middle Pleistocene interval: (1) pre-orogenic faulting at 44.7&thi…

Deformation and fluid flow in the Huab Basin and Etendeka Plateau, NW Namibia

2016

Abstract The Lower Cretaceous Twyfelfontein sandstone formation in the Huab Basin in NW Namibia shows the effects of volcanic activity on a potential reservoir rock. The formation was covered by the Parana-Etendeka Large Igneous Province shortly before or during the onset of South-Atlantic rifting. Deformation bands found in the sandstone trend mostly parallel to the continental passive margin and must have formed during the extrusion of the overlying volcanic rocks, indicating that their formation is related to South-Atlantic rifting. 2D-image porosity analysis of deformation bands reveals significant porosity reduction from host rock to band of up to 70%. Cementation of the sandstone, lin…
