Photoelectrochemical investigation of passive layers formed on Fe in different electrolytic solutions
2004
Abstract The passive films formed on Fe in different electrolytic solutions, spanning almost the overall pH range, and with different growth procedures were investigated systematically by photocurrent spectroscopy. The potentiodynamic growth curves are compared both in aerated and de-aerated electrolytes and a potentiostatic growth procedure is also employed. For high positive formation potentials, similar anodic spectra are recorded in all solutions giving an optical gap very close to that expected for crystalline Fe2O3. The origin of photocurrent spikes is also investigated and the effect of the formation potential upon the measured absorption threshold is discussed taking into account th…
Physicochemical Characterization of Passive Films and Corrosion Layers by Differential Admittance and Photocurrent Spectroscopy
2009
Two different electrochemical techniques, differential admittance and photocurrent spectroscopy, for the characterization of electronic and solid state properties of passive films and corrosion layers are described and critically evaluated. In order to get information on the electronic properties of passive film and corrosion layers as well as the necessary information to locate the characteristic energy levels of the passive film/electrolyte junction like: flat band potential (Ufb), conduction band edge (EC) or valence band edge (EV), a wide use of Mott-Schottky plots is usually reported in corrosion science and passivity studies. It has been shown, in several papers, that the use of simpl…

All-fiber incoherent frequency-to-time mapping method for microwave signal generation with baseband transmission and multicasting support
2008
We present a proof-of-principle experiment for achieving simultaneous distribution of baseband radio-frequency data and up-conversion with broadcasting support over a passive optical network. The technique is based on an incoherent frequency-to-time mapping method for pulse shaping. Specifically, we synthesize the spectral density function of sliced ASE noise from an EDFA with a periodic Mach-Zehnder fiber interferometer optical filter. By using external intensity modulation combined with propagation in an optical fiber, after photodetection, the resultant averaged temporal pulse profile resembles the shape of the incoherent source. The photodetected signal contains both the baseband data a…
High-overtone bulk acoustic resonator as passive ground penetrating RADAR cooperative targets
2013
International audience; RAdio-frequency Detection And Ranging instruments—RADARs—are widely used for applications aimed at measuring passive target velocity or ranging for various metrology applications such as ground position and localization. Within the context of using piezoelectric acoustic passive sensors as cooperative targets to RADARs probed through a radiofrequency link, this paper reports on investigating the compatibility of narrowband resonator architectures with the classical operation mode of wideband RADAR instruments. Since single mode resonators are hardly compatible due to the limited bandwidth of their spectrum, the investigation has been extended to High-overtone Bulk Ac…
PON Monitoring Technique Based on 2D Encoders and Wavelength-to-Time Mapping
2020
A PON monitoring technique is demonstrated based on an OTDR-like device and FBG-encoders having a unique combination of central wavelength and reflection bandwidth. This results in more compact and cost-efficient encoders than previous proposals.
The calculation of the mean radiant temperature of a subject exposed to the solar radiation – A generalised algorithm
2005
Abstract The thermal sensation experienced by a subject in a confined environment is significantly affected by the radiative heat exchange between the human body and the surrounding surfaces: it contributes as far as 30% of the whole thermal exchanges of the subject. Besides, the presence of high-intensity radiation sources like, for example, the sun, may appreciably modify the radiant field to which people are exposed. As a consequence, this could alter notably the comfort conditions. In order of properly taking into account this issue, a simple analytical method is introduced in this work, that allows the easy evaluation of the thermal radiant field induced by the presence of the solar ra…
Passive Sampling of Atmospheric Organic Contaminants
2012
The state of the art of passive sampling monitoring studies of atmospheric contaminants is reviewed in this chapter. The following passive samplers were considered: badge-type diffusive samplers; diffusive tubes; semi-permeable membrane devices; Radiello samplers; solid-phase microextraction fibers; polyurethane foam disks; XAD-2 passive air samplers; stir-bar samplers; polymer-coated glass surfaces; versatile, easy and rapid atmospheric monitor; and vegetation. A summary of the passive samplers used, sampling times, sampling rates, and analyte concentrations found is provided for different organic compounds, such as: carbonyl compounds, volatile compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,…
Hydrogen sulfide measurements in air by passive/diffusive samplers and high-frequency analyzer: A critical comparison
2016
In this study, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) measurements in air carried out using (a) passive/diffusive samplers (Radiello® traps) and (b) a high-frequency (60 s) real-time analyzer (Thermo® 450i) were compared in order to evaluate advantages and limitations of the two techniques. Four different sites in urban environments (Florence, Italy) and two volcanic areas characterized by intense degassing of H2S-rich fluids (Campi Flegrei and Vulcano Island, Italy) were selected for such measurements. The concentrations of H2S generally varied over 5 orders of magnitude (from 101e103 mg/m3), the H2S values measured with the Radiello® traps (H2SR) being significantly higher than the average values measure…
