Green food processing: concepts, strategies, and tools
2019
Abstract One of the developmental aspects of food science is testing and adapting advanced technologies for food production, which save resources and improve food quality. More often than not, this includes technologies operating at lower temperatures, shorter time, and resulting in better preservation of the thermolabile compounds in the foods, as compared to conventional technologies. Nutritionally rich but thermally sensitive raw materials such as fruit, vegetables, meats, and others can particularly benefit from the application of such advanced food technologies. Technologies with the most tested potential for industrial implementation include nonthermal plasma, pulsed electric field, h…
A New Myohaptic Device to Assess Wrist Function in the Lab and in the Clinic – The Wristalyzer
2008
Wristalyzer is a portable robotic device combining haptic technology with electromyographic assessment. It allows to assess wrist motion in physiological and pathological conditions by applying loads and mechanical oscillations, taking into account the ergonomy and the angular positioning of the joints. The wristalyzer works in a free or loaded mode for assessment of metrics of motion and tremor, analyzes the behavior of the wrist joints and the associated muscle activities during delivery of mechanical oscillations, estimates the maximal voluntary contraction, assesses automatically the impedance of the wrist for assessment of rigidity or spasticity. Position, torques and electromyographic…
Perceived challenges in implementing ICT in career services
2018
Information and communication technology (ICT) has gradually gained a firm foothold within the field of guidance counselling. There is evidence of significant progress in integrating ICT into career services and related practices; however, the potential for further improvement persists. With the continuous proliferation of new technologies, improving the implementation of ICT in career services has become increasingly important. In this article Dr Jaana Kettunen outlines research from career development experts’ perspectives; providing important insights into the perceived challenges involved in the implementation of ICT in career services. nonPeerReviewed
A Bibliography on the Use of Communication and Information Technology in Counseling and Career Interventions
2020
This bibliography contains citations from publications or papers presented at professional meetings concerning the use of information and communication technology in the delivery of counseling and career interventions based on work completed at Florida State University and other organizations in various locations. Topics have evolved over time and include computer-assisted career guidance systems, career information delivery systems, assessment, information, distance counseling, social media, research and evaluation, ethical issues, and professional standards. The bibliography is organized by publication year and then author in reverse chronological order by date in order to highlight most …
Extensive livestock farming in Valencian territorial development. Public recognition and social experiences
2019
Semi-natural habitats in the European boreal region: Caught in the socio-ecological extinction vortex?
2022
AbstractWe propose to consider semi-natural habitats—hotspots for biodiversity—being caught in a socio-ecological extinction vortex, similar to the phenomenon described for species threatened with extinction. These habitats are essentially socioecological systems, in which socioeconomic drivers are interlinked with ecological processes. We identify four highly interlinked and mutually reinforcing socio-economic processes, pertaining to the importance of semi-natural habitats for (i) agricultural production, (ii) policy, research and development; (iii) vocational education in the fields of agricultural sciences and (iv) public’s experiences with semi-natural habitats. Evidence from six count…
Estimation of recombinant protein production in Pichia pastoris base don a constraint-based model
2012
[EN] A previously validated constraint based model and possibilistic MFA have been used to design a simple estimator of protein production rate in Pichia pastoris cultures. A structured model of the yeast P. pastoris metabolism is used to predict the balance of key energetic equivalents such as ATP from available measurements, mainly substrate consumption, gases exchange rates and biomass specific growth. It has been shown that ATP flux can be related to biomass growth and protein productivity specific rates by linear regression. Cross-validation has been applied for robust parameter fitting on the basis of chemostat, steady-state experimental conditions. In this way, protein estimation can…
Refrigerated Fruit Juices: Quality and Safety Issues
2007
Fruit juices are an important source of bioactive compounds, but techniques used for their processing and subsequent storage may cause alterations in their contents so they do not provide the benefits expected by the consumer. In recent years consumers have increasingly sought so-called "fresh" products (like fresh products), stored in refrigeration. This has led the food industry to develop alternative processing technologies to produce foods with a minimum of nutritional, physicochemical, or organoleptic changes induced by the technologies themselves. Attention has also focused on evaluating the microbiological or toxicological risks that may be involved in applying these processes, and t…
