Biopolitics and Hegemony in Contemporary Russian Cultural Policy
2018
Since 2011, Russian ‘licensing civil society’ 1 has predominated through censorship and the restrictive regulation of arts and cultural societies. The current conservative project has turned artistic space into public space, indicating moral abuse and a threat to the spiritual health of the Russian nation. Consequently, the symbolic borders of human creativity and individual freedom in arts and cultural societies have been reduced to patriotism, nationalism and moral deductive functions of the state-approved program. This paper will explore Russian state cultural policy and argue that biopolitics is its mainstream strategy. It examines how the ensemble of sovereign and disciplinary power de…
Taylor on Solidarity
2009
After characterizing Taylor’s general approach to the problems of solidarity, we distinguish and reconstruct three contexts of solidarity in which this approach is developed: the civic, the socio-economic, and the moral. We argue that Taylor’s distinctive move in each of these contexts of solidarity is to claim that the relationship at stake poses normatively justified demands, which are motivationally demanding, but insufficiently motivating on their own. On Taylor’s conception, we need some understanding of extra motivational sources which explain why people do (or would) live up to the exacting demands. Taylor accepts that our self-understanding as members of either particular communiti…
What Could Mean âTo Think in Spanishâ?
2008
The expression “to think in Spanish” could be understand in two different senses: as an exhortation or as a description of an state of affairs. In the first sense it has a normative character. It can means something like “we must think in Spanish!”. In the second case, it would be a more or less vague formulation about the existence of a relevant intelectual tradition in the spanish language. The first interpretation is misleading and can have excluding or trivial consequences. The second one is partially true. I propose a third interpretation: “to think in Spanish” could be understood as an invitation not to forget our Spanish-speaking environment in the double sense of the physical and in…

Hooligans, Ultras and Vandals
2015
Football hooliganism in its modern sense is often said to have started in Great Britain in 1961, after a serious riot broke out during a match between Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland; although crowd disorder was not unknown in other countries, this event is regarded as the birth date of the so-called ‘English disease’, which grew in seriousness and extent over the next few decades. The increasing professionalization and internationalization of English football during the 1950s generated a need for greater profits in football clubs that brought about a reorganization of stadiums (Taylor, 1971). Due to this reorganization, young working-class people were relocated at the ends of the stadiums…
