Generating a Gray code for prefix normal words in amortized polylogarithmic time per word

A prefix normal word is a binary word with the property that no substring has more $1$s than the prefix of the same length. By proving that the set of prefix normal words is a bubble language, we can exhaustively list all prefix normal words of length $n$ as a combinatorial Gray code, where successive strings differ by at most two swaps or bit flips. This Gray code can be generated in $\Oh(\log^2 n)$ amortized time per word, while the best generation algorithm hitherto has $\Oh(n)$ running time per word. We also present a membership tester for prefix normal words, as well as a novel characterization of bubble languages.

Sparsity-Driven Digital Terrain Model Extraction

We here introduce an automatic Digital Terrain Model (DTM) extraction method. The proposed sparsity-driven DTM extractor (SD-DTM) takes a high-resolution Digital Surface Model (DSM) as an input and constructs a high-resolution DTM using the variational framework. To obtain an accurate DTM, an iterative approach is proposed for the minimization of the target variational cost function. Accuracy of the SD-DTM is shown in a real-world DSM data set. We show the efficiency and effectiveness of the approach both visually and quantitatively via residual plots in illustrative terrain types.

Randomized Rx For Target Detection

This work tackles the target detection problem through the well-known global RX method. The RX method models the clutter as a multivariate Gaussian distribution, and has been extended to nonlinear distributions using kernel methods. While the kernel RX can cope with complex clutters, it requires a considerable amount of computational resources as the number of clutter pixels gets larger. Weakly Supervised Object Detection in Artworks

We propose a method for the weakly supervised detection of objects in paintings. At training time, only image-level annotations are needed. This, combined with the efficiency of our multiple-instance learning method, enables one to learn new classes on-the-fly from globally annotated databases, avoiding the tedious task of manually marking objects. We show on several databases that dropping the instance-level annotations only yields mild performance losses. CLEAR: Covariant LEAst-Square Refitting with Applications to Image Restoration

International audience; In this paper, we propose a new framework to remove parts of the systematic errors affecting popular restoration algorithms, with a special focus for image processing tasks. Generalizing ideas that emerged for $\ell_1$ regularization, we develop an approach re-fitting the results of standard methods towards the input data. Total variation regularizations and non-local means are special cases of interest. ALGORITHMS FOR JUMBLED PATTERN MATCHING IN STRINGS

The Parikh vector p(s) of a string s is defined as the vector of multiplicities of the characters. Parikh vector q occurs in s if s has a substring t with p(t)=q. We present two novel algorithms for searching for a query q in a text s. One solves the decision problem over a binary text in constant time, using a linear size index of the text. The second algorithm, for a general finite alphabet, finds all occurrences of a given Parikh vector q and has sub-linear expected time complexity; we present two variants, which both use a linear size index of the text.

Resolving gas bubbles ascending in liquid metal from low-SNR neutron radiography images

We demonstrate a new image processing methodology for resolving gas bubbles travelling through liquid metal from dynamic neutron radiography images with an intrinsically low signal-to-noise ratio. Image pre-processing, denoising and bubble segmentation are described in detail, with practical recommendations. Experimental validation is presented—stationary and moving reference bodies with neutron-transparent cavities are radiographed with imaging conditions representative of the cases with bubbles in liquid metal.
