LOFT - A large observatory for x-ray timing
2010
The high time resolution observations of the X-ray sky hold the key to a number of diagnostics of fundamental physics, some of which are unaccessible to other types of investigations, such as those based on imaging and spectroscopy. Revealing strong gravitational field effects, measuring the mass and spin of black holes and the equation of state of ultradense matter are among the goals of such observations. At present prospects for future, non-focused X-ray timing experiments following the exciting age of RXTE/PCA are uncertain. Technological limitations are unavoidably faced in the conception and development of experiments with effective area of several square meters, as needed in order to…
The damped harmonic oscillator in deformation quantization
2005
We propose a new approach to the quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator in the framework of deformation quantization. The quantization is performed in the Schr\"{o}dinger picture by a star-product induced by a modified "Poisson bracket". We determine the eigenstates in the damped regime and compute the transition probability between states of the undamped harmonic oscillator after the system was submitted to dissipation.
Small and hollow magnetic monopoles
2018
We deal with the presence of magnetic monopoles in a non Abelian model that generalizes the standard 't~Hooft-Polyakov model in three spatial dimensions. We investigate the energy density of the static and spherically symmetric solutions to find first order differential equations that solve the equations of motion. The system is further studied and two distinct classes of solutions are obtained, one that can also be described by analytical solutions which is called small monopole, since it is significantly smaller than the standard 't~Hooft-Polyakov monopole. The other type of structure is the hollow monopole, since the energy density is endowed with a hole at its core. The hollow monopole …
Granular chains for the assessment of thermal stress in slender structures
2015
Slender beams subjected to compressive stress are common in civil and mechanical engineering. The rapid in-situ measurement of this stress may prevent structural anomalies. In this paper, we describe the coupling mechanism between highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs) propagating along an L-shaped granular system and a beam in contact with the granular medium. We evaluate the use of HNSWs as a tool to measure stress in thermally loaded structures and to estimate the neutral temperature, i.e. the temperature at which this stress is null. We investigated numerically and experimentally one and two L-shaped chains of spherical particles in contact with a prismatic beam subjected to heat. We f…
Improving point matching on multimodal images using distance and orientation automatic filtering
2016
International audience; Speed Up Robust Features SURF is one of the most popular and efficient methods used for image registration task. In order to achieve a correct registration, a good matching of feature point is required. However in the case of multimodal images, the high and non-linear intensity changes between different modalities led to many outliers (mismatching of detected points) and consequently a fail in the registration. Therefore, in this paper we introduce an efficient method devoted to the detection and removal of such outlier. It's based on an automatic filtering of outliers on both distance and orientation between features points. We tested our proposed method on a set of…
Archaeological tourism: looking for visitor loyalty drivers
2019
Revisit intention has become a focus of attention for archaeological sites management. Identifying visitors’ loyalty drivers to any tourism attraction is crucial but it is even more necessary for t...
Projection of speckle patterns for 3D sensing
2008
In this communication we present the use of projected speckle patterns coming from a phase random mask for sensing depths and thicknesses. The sensing is based on the change of the speckle pattern with propagation and the lack of correlation between speckle patterns recorded at different depths or lateral locations. The principle is used for mapping thickness of transparent media, for depth ranging and for 3D mapping of diffuse objects.
Enhancing visitor experience with war heritage tourism through information and communication technologies: evidence from Spanish Civil War museums an…
2019
War tourism is increasingly capturing the interest of both visitors and scholars. Notwithstanding, academic research has paid little attention to the use of technology in visitor experience co-crea...
Constitutions of Site and Visitor at the Swarbrick Wilderness Discovery Site
2013
Located just off the North Walpole Road, the Swarbrick Wilderness Discovery Site can be seen as a node of several different historical trajectories which are – to different extents – documented in the artworks which frame, or decorate, the site. My account draws on my own biography and probes the investments I have in my various post-settler entanglements with the area. I critique, in particular, the idea of ‘wilderness’ as one formative to post-settler narrations and myths at the same time that it places indigenous practices of belonging under erasure. For, most recently, Swarbrick stood metonymically for the campaign to preserve ‘old growth forests’, culminating at the end of the 1990s, a…
Guerra, estado y organización social de la producción. La Corona de Aragón en guerra con Castilla. 1429-1430
2020
The war that during 1429 and 1430 put face to face the Crowns of Castilla and Aragon, makes a maravellous experimental ground for investigators. Though perfectly well-documented, this fact has been paradoxically negliged because of its lack of political impact. If we follow punctually the events, it is nevertheless possible to prepare a valuable comparative analysis of the characteristics and capacities of the societies in conflict. All this is possible thanks to a better knowledge of the strategies of which public powers dispose to manage a rapid and adequat supply of armament, in a preindustrial context caracterised by the incompetence of the suppliers (craftsmen and traders) to cover, w…
