Support vector machine classification of brain metastasis and radiation necrosis based on texture analysis in MRI

2015

Purpose To develop a classification model using texture features and support vector machine in contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images to differentiate between brain metastasis and radiation necrosis. Methods Texture features were extracted from 115 lesions: 32 of them previously diagnosed as radiation necrosis, 23 as radiation-treated metastasis and 60 untreated metastases; including a total of 179 features derived from six texture analysis methods. A feature selection technique based on support vector machine was used to obtain a subset of features that provide optimal performance. Results The highest classification accuracy evaluated over test sets was achieved with a subset of ten features…

Das basaloide Plattenepithelkarzinom (BSC) der Mundschleimhaut

1997

The basaloid-squamous carcinoma (BSC) that was first described in 1986 by Wain et al. for the head and neck region is a rare distinct variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The cardinal histopathologic feature is a biphasic cellular pattern of basaloid and squamous components. BSC has been confused with solid adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). Although the number of reported cases is small, BSC appears biologically virulent, with a propensity to aggressive local behavior, early regional and distant metastasis, and subsequent poor survival. We report the clinicopathological characteristics of 4 new cases and compare their immunohistochemical features with those of solid ACC and conventional …

Stationary, Oscillatory, Spatio-Temporal Patterns and Existence of Global Solutions in Reaction-Diffusion Models of Three Species

2023

The goal of my Ph.D. research is to analyze three species models in order to describe the behavior of an ecological community. In particular, two reaction-diffusion systems describing different local interactions between three species have been considered to obtain species coexistence, diversity, and distribution patterns. The first analyzed model describes intraguild predation: there are an IG-predator species, an IG-prey species, and a common resource species, which is shared by both of them. The IGP interaction is of Lotka-Volterra type, coupled with nonlinear diffusion, since we assume that the IG-prey moves towards lower density areas of the IG-predator. In this model, the extinction o…

Automated classification of focal breast lesions according to S-detect: validation and role as a clinical and teaching tool

2018

Abstract PURPOSE: To assess the diagnostic performance and the potential as a teaching tool of S-detect in the assessment of focal breast lesions. METHODS: 61 patients (age 21-84 years) with benign breast lesions in follow-up or candidate to pathological sampling or with suspicious lesions candidate to biopsy were enrolled. The study was based on a prospective and on a retrospective phase. In the prospective phase, after completion of baseline US by an experienced breast radiologist and S-detect assessment, 5 operators with different experience and dedication to breast radiology performed elastographic exams. In the retrospective phase, the 5 operators performed a retrospective assessment a…

Precipitazione e pattern di circolazione atmosferica in Sicilia

2019

(Discriminative) Pattern Discovery on Biological Networks

2017

This work provides a review of biological networks as a model for analysis, presenting and discussing a number of illuminating analyses. Biological networks are an effective model for providing insights about biological mechanisms. Networks with different characteristics are employed for representing different scenarios. This powerful model allows analysts to perform many kinds of analyses which can be mined to provide interesting information about underlying biological behaviors. The text also covers techniques for discovering exceptional patterns, such as a pattern accounting for local similarities and also collaborative effects involving interactions between multiple actors (for example …

Pattern formation driven by cross–diffusion in a 2D domain

2012

Abstract In this work we investigate the process of pattern formation in a two dimensional domain for a reaction–diffusion system with nonlinear diffusion terms and the competitive Lotka–Volterra kinetics. The linear stability analysis shows that cross-diffusion, through Turing bifurcation, is the key mechanism for the formation of spatial patterns. We show that the bifurcation can be regular, degenerate non-resonant and resonant. We use multiple scales expansions to derive the amplitude equations appropriate for each case and show that the system supports patterns like rolls, squares, mixed-mode patterns, supersquares, and hexagonal patterns.

A physical-computational modelling for analysis of Centromere patterns in IIF images

2014

Autoimmune diseases are a family of more than 80 chronic, and often disabling, illnesses that develop when underlying defects in the immune system lead the body to attack its own organs, tissues, and cells. Diagnosing autoimmune diseases can be particularly difficult because these disorders can affect any organ or tissue in the body, and produce highly diverse clinical manifestations, depending on the site of autoimmune attack. Moreover, disease symptoms are often not apparent until the disease has reached a relatively advanced stage. These observations suggested us to develop an automated method to support the diagnosis. Developing an automated procedure for diagnosis of autoimmune disease…
