Silica-coated calcium pectinate beads for colonic drug delivery

The aim of this work is to develop novel organic-inorganic hybrid beads for colonic drug delivery. For this purpose, calcium pectinate beads with theophylline are prepared by a cross-linking reaction between amidated low-methoxyl pectin and calcium ions. The beads are then covered with silica, starting from tetraethyoxysilane (TEOS), by a sol-gel process. The influence of TEOS concentration (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 M) during the process is studied in order to modulate the thickness of the silica layer around the pectinate beads and thus to control the drug release. Safely Dissolvable and Healable Active Packaging Films Based on Alginate and Pectin

Extensive usage of long-lasting petroleum based plastics for short-lived application such as packaging has raised concerns regarding their role in environmental pollution. In this research, we have developed active, healable, and safely dissolvable alginate-pectin based biocomposites that have potential applications in food packaging. The morphological study revealed the rough surface of these biocomposite films. Tensile properties indicated that the fabricated samples have mechanical properties in the range of commercially available packaging films while possessing excellent healing efficiency. Coffee grounds as filler for pectin: Green composites with competitive performances dependent on the UV irradiation.

Novel composite bioplastics were successfully prepared by filling pectin matrix with treated coffee grounds. The amount of coffee dispersed into the pectin was changed within a wide filler range. The morphology of the pectin/coffee hybrid films was studied by microscopic techniques in order to investigate their mesoscopic structure as well as the sizes distribution of the particles dispersed into the matrix. The micrographs showed that the coffee grounds are uniformly dispersed within the polymeric matrix. The helminth community of the Iberian hare, Lepus granatensis (Lagomorpha: Leporidae), in the province of Granada, Spain

Abstract The helminth community of the Iberian hare, Lepus granatensis, in the southern Spanish province of Granada was analysed, thorough the study of 487 individuals shot by hunters between November 1998 and October 1999. Six helminth species were found: Mosgovoyia pectinata (Cestoda); Trichostrongylus retortaeformis, Nematodiroides zembrae, Nematodirus sp., Passalurus ambiguus and Micipsella numidica (Nematoda). N. zembrae and M. pectinata (62.4 % and 17.2 %, respectively) were the only component species found. The predominance of helminth species with a direct life cycle is noteworthy. A new species of Pythium with filamentous sporangia having pectinolytic activities, isolated in the Burgundy region of France.

A new species, Pythium pectinolyticum (F-83.1), isolated from soil samples taken in the Burgundy region is being described here. This species is characterised by its filamentous non-inflated type of sporangia, smooth-walled mostly catenulate oogonia and very rare antheridia. This fungus is a very slow-growing organism on most of the solid media, but it grows well in liquid media and also on those containing pectin as the sole source of carbon. Morphological features are described here together with the sequences of the internal transcribed spacer 1 region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA of the fungus, its comparison with related species, and its pectinolytic behaviour.

Des systemes modeles de confiture a teneurs croissantes en pectine ont ete developpes afin d'observer la liberation d'arome par des matrices gelifiees a tres faible concentration en hydrocolloide. L'addition de pectine modifie la liberation des composes d'arome les plus volatils et hydrophobes. Ce phenomene est strictement lie a la formation d'un reseau gelifie qui, meme a une concentration de 0,1 % en pectine, cause une diminution de la mobilite des composes volatils.
