PV-Alert: A fog-based architecture for safeguarding vulnerable road users

2017

International audience; High volumes of pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users (VRUs) have much higher casualty rates per mile; not surprising given their lack of protection from an accident. In order to alleviate the problem, sensing capabilities of smartphones can be used to detect, warn and safeguard these road users. In this research we propose an infrastructure-less fog-based architecture named PV-Alert (Pedestrian-Vehicle Alert) where fog nodes process delay sensitive data obtained from smartphones for alerting pedestrians and drivers before sending the data to the cloud for further analysis. Fog computing is considered in developing the architecture since it is an emer…

The guilty, the unlucky, or the unaware? Assessing self-reported behavioral contributors and attributions on pedestrian crashes through structural eq…

2020

Introduction: Recent literature suggests that the causation of pedestrians' crashes and the contribution of safety-related behaviors within them may substantially differ compared to other road users. This study aimed to test the effect of individual factors and safety-related road behaviors on the self-reported walk- ing crashes suffered by pedestrians and, complementarily, to analyze the causes that pedestrians attrib- uted to the crashes they suffered as pedestrians during the previous five years. Method: For this cross- sectional research performed in Spain, data from a nationwide sample of 2,499 pedestrians from the 17 regions of the country were collected. Participants had a mean age o…

Urban layout, landscape features and pedestrian usage

2007

ACL; International audience; The analysis of the factors which condition walking in the urban environment is an important issue in urban planning. The present work is based on the hypothesis that the landscape, in its entirety, plays a role in encouraging pedestrian movements. The frequency of pedestrian traffic in the streets is analyzed as a function of accessibility and landscape preferences with the help of a conceptual framework. By defining accessibility as the measurement of the integration of the space syntax, preferences are researched using multiple stepwise regression of visual variables. This method has been applied to an area in the city of Lille (France) where the pedestrian f…

Towards CCTV-aware Routing and Navigation for Privacy, Anonymity, and Safety - Feasibility Study in Jyväskylä

2021

AbstractIn order to withstand the ever-increasing invasion of privacy by CCTV cameras and technologies, on par CCTV-aware solutions must exist that provide privacy, safety, and cybersecurity features. We argue that a first important step towards such CCTV-aware solutions must be a mapping system (e.g., Google Maps, OpenStreetMap) that provides both privacy and safety routing and navigation options. Unfortunately, to the best of our knowledge, there are no mapping nor navigation systems that support CCTV-privacy and CCTV-safety routing options. At the same time, in order to move the privacy vs. safety debate related to CCTV surveillance cameras from purely subjective to data-driven and evide…

WATCHING PEOPLE: ALGORITHMS TO STUDY HUMAN MOTION AND ACTIVITIES

2020

Nowadays human motion analysis is one of the most active research topics in Computer Vision and it is receiving an increasing attention from both the industrial and scientific communities. The growing interest in human motion analysis is motivated by the increasing number of promising applications, ranging from surveillance, human–computer interaction, virtual reality to healthcare, sports, computer games and video conferencing, just to name a few. The aim of this thesis is to give an overview of the various tasks involved in visual motion analysis of the human body and to present the issues and possible solutions related to it. In this thesis, visual motion analysis is categorized into thr…

Head, chest and femur injury in teenage pedestrian–SUV crash; mass influence on the speeds

2018

This work studies the teenage pedestrian–sport utility vehicle (SUV) crash; injury to the vital parts of the body, such as the head and chest, and to the femur is evaluated. More advanced injury criteria are applied, as provided in the rules. The multibody technique is applied by making use of SimWise software and of the teenager anthropomorphic model, the use of which is now consolidated. Head injury criterion (HIC) is used for the head, thoracic trauma index (TTI) criterion for the thorax in the case of side impact and 3 ms criterion in the case of frontal impact, while the force criterion is used for the femur. Both the TTI and femur load evaluation require non-substantial modifications…

Pedestrian Tracking in 360 Video by Virtual PTZ Cameras

2018

Since the data acquired by a PTZ camera change while adjusting the pan, tilt and zoom parameters, the results of tracking algorithms are difficult to reproduce; such diffi- culty limits the development and the comparison of tracking algorithms with PTZ cameras. The recently introduced 360- degree cameras acquire spherical views of the environment, generally stored as equirectangular images. Each pixel of an equirectangular image corresponds to a point on the spherical surface. A gnomonic projection can be used to project the points on the spherical surface onto a plane tangent to the sphere. Such tangent plane can be interpreted as the image plane of a virtual PTZ camera oriented towards th…

Indicators for sustainable pedestrian mobility

2012

Pedestrians walk everyday to satisfy their basic necessities. They need an environment that reflects their requirements and expectations, in other words "liveable" as much as possible. So we should offer tools that could allow a complete and clear evaluation of the existing walking environment, taking into account both pedestrian requirements and urban environment schemes. To measure pedestrian mobility performance we usually use indicators, which measure performances and grant a quick estimation of progress. Indicators are universally acknowledged synthetic and standard parameters that should help policy makers gauge whether things are going in the right direction or not. They should be ou…

New spaces of walkability in Asian cities

2014

International audience; Not long ago, the streets of Asian cities (South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia) were mostly used by pedestrians and cyclists. But in recent years, they have experienced in recent years a huge growth in the number of vehicles plying their streets: nowadays it has even become hazardous to try to cross these streets, and in some cases pedestrian sidewalks have been invaded by parked vehicles (cars and motorbikes), in addition to commercial activities. The walking experience is unpleasant and unhealthy. What have been the adaptations to the conflict between motorized mobility and non-motorized ways to get around the city ? After reviewing some of the difficulties encou…
