Functional and social discomfort during orthodontic treatment--effects on compliance and prediction of patients' adaptation by personality variables.

2000

During the course of treatment orthodontic patients frequently endure a number of functional complaints and are anxious about their appearance. The aims of this longitudinal study were to follow the progress of patients' adaptation to discomfort, to elucidate the putative relationship between the type of appliance worn and functional and social discomfort experienced, to study potential predictability by their attitude to treatment and to evaluate the effects of discomfort as predictors of patients' compliance. Eighty-four patients undergoing either removable, functional, or fixed appliance treatment monitored their complaints during the first 7 days of treatment and rated them retrospectiv…

Co-occurrence of developmental delays in a screening study of 4-year-old Finnish children

2004

The aim of this population study was to examine the severity and prevalence of co-occurring developmental delays in 4-year-old children, the rate of overlapping problems, and sex differences. A sample of 434 children (196 males, 238 females; mean age 4 years 3 months, SD 1 month) were administered the 'Lene' test: a comprehensive neurodevelopmental screening test. Results suggest that co-occurrence of attention-behavioural, motor-perceptual, and language delays occurring in school-aged children could already be detected at the age of 4 years. Isolated delays were usually mild, but co-occurring difficulties were mostly moderate or severe. Overlap between developmental delays depended on the …

Intraoral electrostimulator for xerostomia relief: a long-term, multicenter, open-label, uncontrolled, clinical trial

2012

Objective A previous sham-controlled multinational study demonstrated the short-term efficacy and safety for xerostomia treatment of an intraoral device that delivers electrostimulation to the lingual nerve. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that those beneficial effects would be sustained over an 11-month period. Study Design The device was tested on a mixed sample of 94 patients with xerostomia in an open-label, uncontrolled, prospective multicenter trial. Statutory outcome assessments were done at 5th, 8th, and 11th months and analyzed by multiple comparisons. Results Improvements achieved at month 5 from baseline were sustained throughout the follow-up period for th…

Manifestation of speech and language disorders in children with hearing impairment compared with children with specific language disorders.

2010

Children with hearing impairment (HI) often suffer from speech and language disorders. We wondered if the manifestation of these disorders resembled the ones in children with specific language impairment (SLI). Using matched pairs, we compared the manifestation of a speech and language disorder in 5- and 6-year-old children with HI and SLI. We looked at receptive language skills using the Reynell scales, the lexicon, syntax and morphology, output phonology, and phonological short-term memory. Receptive language skills were more impaired in HI children. No significant differences were recorded for all other domains. We conclude that language deficits that are at least partially caused by the…

Atypical presentation of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis: two case reports

2017

Abstract Background Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by severe neurological and psychiatric symptoms and a difficult diagnosis. The disease is often secondary to a neoplastic lesion, seldom diagnosed years later. Psychiatric symptoms are prevalent in adults; neurologic symptoms are more evident in children, who typically present primarily with neurological symptoms. To the best of our knowledge, the association with juvenile idiopathic arthritis has not been described. Case presentation We report the cases of two caucasian girls with an atypical presentation. The first patient was an 8-year-old girl with normal psychomotor developmen…

Relationship between speech perception and production skills and morphosyntactic development in Spanish-speaking children with Speech Sound Disorders

2021

A specific picture of speech disturbances in Polish speaking patients with mixed dysarthria in multiple sclerosis (MS) and in Wilson's disease (WD)

2014

The aim of this paper is to compare a specific picture of speech disturbances in Polish-speaking patients with mixed dysarthria in multiple sclerosis (MS), and in Wilson’s disease (WD). We selected for the experiment 20 persons with dysarthria of different origin: 10 persons with dysarthria in multiple sclerosis (MS), and 10 persons with dysarthria in Wilson’s disease (WD). The compared groups were similar in age and the severity of the dysarthria. Patients read 11 words containing selected Polish sounds distinguished according to the manner of articulation. The results were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed (using a non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test). The picture of speech product…

Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss in scholastic age subjects: Psychopedagogical aspects

2006

The Authors want to assess a probable significant relation between the unilateral sensorineural hearing loss and some learning difficulties and language acquisitions, often found, through our observation, in impaired children. The Authors have examined a group of subjects in their scholastic age who have this kind of hearing loss and, through several dialogues with them, they have gathered some relevant data about the difficulties that children have at school, and drawn up a questionnaire.
