Il Museo di Arte Sacra a S. Angelo di Brolo

2008

Fabrication of microfluidic devices using MeV ion beam Programmable Proximity Aperture Lithography (PPAL)

2008

Abstract MeV ion beam lithography is a direct writing technique capable of producing microfluidic patterns and lab-on-chip devices with straight walls in thick resist films. In this technique a small beam spot of MeV ions is scanned over the resist surface to generate a latent image of the pattern. The microstructures in resist polymer can be then revealed using a chemical developer that removes exposed resist, while leaving unexposed resist unaffected. In our system the size of the rectangular beam spot is programmably defined by two L-shaped tantalum blades with well-polished edges. This allows rapid exposure of entire rectangular pattern elements up to 500 × 500 μm in one step. By combin…

Development of the Jyväskylä microbeam facility

2012

Abstract A new microbeam facility is being constructed at the 1.7 MV Pelletron Accelerator in Jyvaskyla. The facility is designed for easy upgrading and incorporates a number of innovative features. Initially, it is based on a Heidelberg doublet with a design capability of a 3 × 5 μm beamspot at PIXE intensities and later upgraded to nanobeam performance. A thermal-expansion compensated rigid frame mounted on a mechanically isolated floor section is used to support the ion optical components. A compact-post focusing electrostatic deflector is used for high linearity beam scanning. This together with a novel time-stamped data collection (TDC) allows dynamic effects in IBIC, fluorescence blea…

Analytical Study of Raw Materials of Zinc Oxide Used for Enamels on Industrial Ceramics: Quantitative Analysis of Zinc, Lead, and Sulfur in These Sam…

2006

Abstract An analytical study is carried out to optimize X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) quantitative analysis of Zn, Pb, and S in ZnO samples commonly used to obtain industrial ceramic enamels. Pb and S in the raw materials often contaminate ZnO and are very detrimental in industrial applications. Thus, very accurate analytical determination of these elements in ceramic samples is extremely important. First of all, a mineralogical study by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) on the different components in these raw materials and the materials produced during the firing process is performed in order to establish the mineral forms in a reference sample for analysi…

Volatile compounds extracted from polypropylene sheets by hot water :influence of the temperature of sheets injection

1993

A study was made on polypropylene (PP) pellets degraded and not degraded and pointed out the presence and olfactive importance of volatile components extracted from PP pellets by hot water. Plastic packaging materials correspond to a further step of manufacturing: the injection step, and this is often conducted at high temperature. PP (not degraded) and PP-CR (degraded) were transformed into sheets at several temperatures; Lickens-Nickerson extracts were made and allowed the quantification of volatile compounds already identified. A statistical analysis showed that temperature was a very significant parameter. An increasing injection temperature (275 or 300°C° creates increasing quantities …

Forming pressure dependence of the ferroelectric domain structure in green barium titanate pellets

1995

Abstract Modifications of the X-ray diffraction line profiles by die pressing of fine grained powders of barium titanate have been studied. Two main parameters have been considered: the forming pressure and the mechanical characteristics of the binder. The higher the forming pressure, the greater the modifications of the line profiles. Furthermore, the phenomena seems to be related to pressing only; no significant effect related to the nature of the binder has been shown. The modifications of the diffraction line profiles are interpreted by considering a reduction of the size of the ferroelectric domains during pressing. In order to confirm this interpretation, the behaviour of the domain s…

Characterization and pilot scale fluidized bed gasification of herbaceous biomass: A case study on alfalfa pellets

2015

Abstract Pilot-scale bubbling fluidized bed gasification tests of alfalfa pellets were performed at two different operational periods ranged on the basis of the two given equivalence ratio (ER) (the ratio between actual air and the stoichiometric air) namely as 0.25 and 0.30. During the test, the solid feeding rate was kept constant at 4.7 kg/h while the air input was varied and thus the ER. Increasing air from 4.16 to 4.99 N m3/h contributed to the evolution pattern of several parameters such as the rise in gas lower heating value (LHV) and gas yield, the average maximum of which were 4.2 MJ/N m3 and 1.5 N m3/kg respectively. Gas composition was mainly boosted by the concentration of CO, a…

Environmental performance of wood pellets' production through life cycle analysis

2016

Abstract Forests play a key role as the source of an essential renewable material and/or fuel: wood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the environmental impacts related to high-quality pellet production for domestic heating following the LCA (life cycle assessment) methodology and considering a cradle-to-gate perspective in the Tuscany region. This is representative and interesting for Italian pellet factories and for similar factories located in Central Europe, considering the Italian contribution to the production capacity of that area. All of the activities involved, from wood extraction in no-industrial forests to packed pellet production, ready for delivery to final users, were tak…
