Lycopersicon esculentum plants exhibit increased salt stress tolerance following treat‑ ment with adipic acid monoethylester and 1,3‑diaminepropane (DAAME), known as an inducer of resistance against biotic stress in tomato and pepper. For an efficient water and nutrient uptake, plants should adapt their water potential to compensate a decrease in water soil potential produced by salt stress. DAAME‑treated plants showed a faster and stronger water potential reduction and an enhanced proline accumulation. Salinity‑induced oxidative stress was also ameliorated by DAAME treatments. Capsaicin was extracted from red hot pepper (Capsicum annuum) fruits and from commercial red hot pepper powder and separated on silica gel 60 plates with concentration zone (Merck); toluene-acetone-chloroform, 45 + 30 + 25 ( v/v ), was used as mobile phase. Detection was performed by exposure to iodine vapor. The spots assumed to arise from capsaicin were removed from the plate and the components were extracted with chloroform. The extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry.

Assessment of contamination of Salmonella spp. in imported black pepper and sesame seed and salmonella inactivation by gamma irradiation

This study shows the frequency of seeds samples contaminated by Salmonella spp. collected randomly from local markets; on 30 black pepper sample no contaminated sample was found while Salmonella spp. was detected in 3 of 36 (8.3%) analyzed sesame samples; three different serotypes were identified: S. Montevideo, S. Stanleyville e S. Tilene. The efficacy of gamma irradiation to inactivate Salmonella Montevideo in black pepper and sesame irradiated between 1 and 5 kGy was evaluated. 3 kGy is sufficient to reduce of 3-4 log CFU/g; whereas 5 kGy have been need to reduce 5.5-6 log CFU/g for samples of black pepper and sesame. The beneficial effect of titanium on plant metabolism can result in a more profitable use of fertilizers on many crops. An experiment was performed in a greenhouse with Capsicum annuum L. cv. Bunejo plants cultivated under different levels of nitrogen fertilization: 100% N — 250 N fertilizer units/ha (NFU); 75% N - 187.5 NFU; 50% N - 125 NFU; 25% N - 62.5 NFU. A third of the plants in each N support remained Ti-untreated and were used as a reference.
