Crowdsourcing as a mode of open innovation: Exploring drivers of success of a multisided platform through system dynamics modelling
2020
This article aims to explore drivers of success of a crowdsourcing platform. The study conceptualizes crowdsourcing as a mode of open innovation and places such a concept within the context of the sharing economy. Upon this framework, the paper analyses the case of InnoCentive, a successful crowdsourcing platform where innovation-driven organizations search for solutions to their R&D tasks. The system dynamics model frames main InnoCentive business processes and offers a causal perspective on the relationships between platform performance—in terms of users base—and resources structure. The discussion on simulation outputs is carried out through a dynamic performance management view of p…
Modeling Alternatives Sustainable-Energy-Policy for the Supply Chain of Wind Power in Brazil.
2020
Renewable energy studies have received high attention in the last few years due the increasing deployment of alternatives such as wind, solar and biomass, as a result of the urgency in reducing fossil fuels consumption. This situation has involved an important challenge for long-term renewables policy and energy system planning. Brazil is the richest country in terms of renewable sources in Latin American. Brazil has energy generation portfolio not much different form the Colombia one, and the understanding of this very important country will contribute to inspire other countries in the region, particularly Colombia. Since 2004 the Brazilian energy policy promotes wind power development aim…
Enhancing the Collaborative Governance in Post-disaster Reconstruction: A Dynamic Performance Management Approach
2020
The impact of natural disasters on human life was blatantly demonstrated through media reports of recent events such as the Ache tsunami in 2004, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 and Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami in 2010-2011. Rising from the rubbles, our societies strive to learn from the experiences of how to build a better life and avoid future catastrophes. Post-disaster reconstruction (PDR) plays a crucial role in providing a safer and more resilient living environment for people, particularly for those disaster victims. This thesis focused on how implementing a collaborative governance approach in post-disaster reconstruction can offer effective solutions to …

2016
The concept of organizational growth concerns the strategic domain of management. It underlies the aptitude of an organization to attain a set of results leading to its long-term success and continuity.
Supporting start-up business model design through system dynamics modelling
2017
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how system dynamics (SD) modelling can provide a methodological support to business model (BM) design with the intent to better communicate business strategy and manage performance. Design/methodology/approach After a literature review of the field and an analysis of the strengths and limitations of conventional BM frameworks, the paper illustrates and discusses an approach that combines such a framework with SD modelling. A single-case study design was selected to explore the implications and limitations of using this combined approach to business modelling. Findings The methodological support provided by SD to BM design may effectively impr…
Prevention and Mitigation of Rural Higher Education Dropout in Colombia: A Dynamic Performance Management Approach.
2023
Background: Dropout in higher education is a socio-educational phenomenon that has the scope to limit the benefits of education as well as to widen social disparities. For this reason, governments have implemented various public policies for its prevention and mitigation. However, in rural populations, such policies have proven to be ineffective. The aim of this paper is to simulate public policy scenarios for the treatment of school dropout in rural higher education in Colombia from a Dynamic Performance Management approach. Methodology: To achieve the aim, a parameterised simulation model was designed with data from Colombian state entities in rural higher education. Five simulations were…
Towards Performance, Quality and Environmental Management in Local Government: the Case of Spain
2009
Abstract The search for improvements in the management and quality of public services seems to be a constant in all public administrations, and there is an ever-increasing use of management techniques and models from the business sector. The aim of this paper is to show which management systems are being used by Spanish local governments to improve their management in terms of economy, quality and the environment. Our analysis is based on a questionnaire sent to Spanish local governments about the tools they use and the factors that influence their implementation. The results show that more efforts are necessary to implement performance measurement and total quality management, but they als…

A systematic assessment of road pavement sustainability through a review of rating tools
2017
Pavements are engineered systems present in every modern society, and they have significant environmental, economic and social impacts. In an effort to promote more sustainable decisions regarding pavement design, construction and management, several pavement sustainability assessment tools have been developed. This research reviewed some of these tools and found that many of them do not treat the pavement as a system; instead, they seek to optimize individual aspects of the pavement in an effort to increase its sustainability. Therefore, a framework for analytically assessing the system outcomes towards sustainable objectives is presented and applied for modern pavement sustainability asse…
A Dynamic Performance Management Approach to Evaluate and Support SMEs Competitiveness: Evidences from a Case Study
2013
The role of Performance Management (PM) systems has become crucial for steering Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to successfully compete during the ongoing critical economic transition. To improve decision-maker strategic learning processes, traditional PM frameworks need to be combined with System Dynamics (SD) modeling. This paper shows how to design and use a Dynamic Performance Management (DPM) approach to assess and support SMEs competitiveness. The emerging framework is applied to a real case of a small business to analyze the empirical effectiveness of the approach hereby suggested.
