Oxidation-Induced Increase In Photoreactivity of Bovine Retinal Lipid Extract

2017

Open access original paper Source : 10th EPR Workshop on Applications of EPR in Biology and Medicine, 2016 in Krakow, POLAND.; International audience; The mammalian retina contains a high level of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (22:6) (DHA), which are highly susceptible to oxidation. It has been shown that one of the products of DHA oxidation-carboxyethylpyrrole (CEP), generated in situ, causes modifications of retinal proteins and induces inflammation response in the outer retina. These contributing factors may play a role in the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It is also possible that some of the lipid oxidation products are photoreactiv…

Exosomal HSP60: a potentially useful biomarker for diagnosis, assessing prognosis, and monitoring response to treatment.

2017

Introduction: Cell-to-cell communication is imperative for life and it is mediated by sending and receiving information via the secretion and subsequent receptor-mediated detection of biological molecules. Exosomes (EXs) secreted from cells to the extracellular environment play an important role in intercellular communication in normal and pathological conditions. Areas covered: New evidence indicates that tumor cells-derived EXs contribute to cancer progression through the modulation of tumor microenvironment. The exosomal heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) is very likely a key player in intercellular cross-talk, particularly during the progress of diseases, such as cancer. Many studies have fo…

The effects of fractional CO2 laser, Nano-hydroxyapatite and MI paste on mechanical properties of bovine enamel after bleaching

2017

Background This study investigated the effect of post bleaching treatments to the change of enamel elastic modulus and microhardness after dental bleaching in- vitro. Material and Methods Fifty bovine incisor slab were randomly assigned into five groups (n=10). The samples were bleached for three times; 20 minutes each time, by 40% hydrogen peroxide. Next it was applied fractional CO2 laser for two minutes, Nano- hydroxy apatite (N-HA) and MI-paste for 7 days and 2 minutes per day. The sound enamel and bleached teeth without post treatment remained as control groups. The elastic modulus and microhardness were measured at three times; 24 hours, 1 and 2 months. Data were statistically analyze…

LC‐ESI / HRMS analysis of glucosinolates, oxylipins and phenols in Italian rocket salad ( Diplotaxis erucoides subsp. erucoides (L.) DC .) and evalua…

2021

BACKGROUND This study investigated the chemical profile and biological activity of Diplotaxis erucoides subsp. erucoides (L.) DC. (Brassicaceae) collected in Sicily (Italy). RESULTS Liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization and high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-ESI/HRMS) analysis of the ethanol extract revealed the presence of 42 compounds - glucosinolates, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonoids, and oxylipins. The extract was tested for its antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic) acid (ABTS), ferric reducing ability power (FRAP), and β-carotene bleaching tests. Promising protection from lipid peroxida…

Immunohistopathology in Diagnostic Neuropathology

1983

Within the field of surgical pathology, immunohistochemistry is now frequently applied to the morphological diagnosis of lymphomas (11), certain carcinomas and other selected types of tumor (12). In neuropathology, the study of neuro-oncological and non-neoplastic diseases may also receive diagnostic support from performing immunohistological techniques, which encompass immunofluorescent and immunoperoxidase methods. The following report represents a survey of our experience in this recently developed field of diagnostic neuropathology.

Cribra orbitalia as a potential indicator of childhood stress: Evidence from paleopathology, stable C, N, and O isotopes, and trace element concentra…

2016

Cribra orbitalia (CO), or porotic hyperostosis (PH) of the orbital roof, is one of the most common pathological conditions found in archaeological subadult skeletal remains. Reaching frequencies higher than 50% in many prehistoric samples, CO has been generally attributed to a variety of factors including malnutrition (e.g., megaloblastic anemia) and parasitism. In this study, we tested the relationship between CO, trace element concentrations, and stable isotope values (δ13C, δ15N, δ18O) in subadult skeletons from a 17th to 18th century cemetery in the historic town of Jēkabpils, Latvia. A total of 28 subadults were examined, seven of which (25%) showed evidence of CO. Bioarchaeological ev…

Partition of Indicaxanthin in Membrane Biomimetic Systems. A Kinetic and Modeling Approach

2009

The solubilization site of indicaxanthin (Ind) in lipid bilayers was investigated by the kinetics of Ind oxidation by peroxyl radicals in water and in aqueous/L-alpha-dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) vesicles, pH 7.4, and 37.0 and 48.0 degrees C, that is, in a gel-like and a crystal liquidlike bilayer state, respectively. The time-dependent Ind absorbance decay, matched with a successful simulation of the reaction kinetic mechanism by Gepasi software, supported a multistep pathway. Computer-assisted analysis allowed calculation of the rate constants associated with the reactions involved, the values of which decreased with increasing DPPC concentration. The binding constant calculated…

Endogenous peroxynitrite modulates PGHS-1–dependent thromboxane A2 formation and aggregation in human platelets

2008

Aggregation of activated platelets is considerably mediated by the autocrine action of thromboxane A2 (TxA2) which is formed in a prostaglandin endoperoxide H2 synthase-1 (PGHS-1 or COX-1)-dependent manner. The activity of PGHS-1 can be stimulated by peroxides, an effect termed "peroxide tone", that renders PGHS-1 the key regulatory enzyme in the formation of TxA2. Activated platelets release nitric oxide (*NO) and superoxide (O*2) but their interactions with the prostanoid pathway have been controversially discussed in platelet physiology and pathophysiology. The current study demonstrates that endogenously formed peroxynitrite at nanomolar concentrations, originating from the interaction …
