Retinal Imaging through Phakic Iris-Claw IOL.

2014

AbstractBackground: Phakic anterior chamber iris-fixated IOL (PIOL) are established for the correction of high myopia. These patients require attention to macular pathologies. This study was to evaluate the quality of imaging through the PIOLs. Methods: 54 eyes of 31 myopic and hyperopic patients with Verisyse®, Verisyse toric®, and Veriflex® phakic iris-fixated IOL were included. Mean preoperative refraction was −11.0 D and +5.7 D, respectively; mean follow-up time was 7.4 years (5–11 years). A matched control group was formed without PIOL implantation. OCT scans were performed and evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. Results: In 52 eyes of 31 patients (96%), a 3D-OCT image and fund…

Protein carbonyl groups in trained subjects.

2012

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the plasma protein carbonyl groups (PC) in 81 trained subjects (TS) who practiced regular, non professional physical activity. They were divided into three groups according to the type of sport they practiced (endurance, mixed or power). On fasting venous blood we examined the PC groups employing an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit, in which 2,4-dinitrophenyl-hydrazine reacts with the PC forming a stable hydrazone product. In the whole group of TS a significant decrease in PC was present, in comparison with sedentary controls (SC). Dividing TS into groups, we observed a decreased PC concentration in those practicing endurance and mix…

Interrelationships between lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant status in sedentary controls and unprofessional athletes.

2010

We examined the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) as an index of lipid peroxidation, and the total antioxidant status (TAS) in 81 unprofessional athletes subdivided into three subgroups. The first group included 28 subjects who practised endurance sports, the second included 30 subjects who practised mixed sports, the third included 23 subjects who practised power sports. We enrolled also a group of 61 sedentary controls (SC). TBARS were increased and TAS was decreased in the whole group of athletes in comparison with SC; an almost similar behaviour was present also subdividing athletes according to the practised sport. A significant negative correlation between these two para…

Oxidative stress and maternal obesity: Feto-placental unit interaction

2013

Abstract Objective To determine oxidative stress markers in maternal obesity during pregnancy and to evaluate feto-placental unit interaction, especially predictors of fetal metabolic alterations. Patients and methods 40 obese pregnant women (prepregnancy BMI > 30 kg/m²) were compared to 50 control pregnant women. Maternal, cord blood and placenta samples were collected at delivery. Biochemical parameters (total cholesterol and triglycerides) and oxidative stress markers (malondialdehyde, carbonyl proteins, superoxide anion expressed as reduced Nitroblue Tetrazolium, nitric oxide expressed as nitrite, reduced glutathione, catalase, superoxide dismutase) were assayed by biochemical methods. …

Assessment of salivary and serum antioxidant status in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis

2009

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the possible association of oxidant/antioxidant status and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Study design: The study consis ted of thirty-one patients with RAS and thirty-two healthy controls from whom saliva and blood samples were collected. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) and catalase (CAT) were measured in erythrocytes and total antioxidant status (TAS) was measured in plasma and saliva. Results: Erythrocyte SOD activity was significantly lower in RAS patients in comparison to healthy controls (P=0.012). No significant differences were found in erythrocyte GSHPx, CAT activities, and salivary and plasma TAS be…

Lipid Peroxidation, Protein Oxidation, Gelatinases, and Their Inhibitors in a Group of Adults with Obesity

2019

AbstractThe association between obesity and cardiovascular diseases has a multifactorial pathogenesis, including the synthesis of inflammatory molecules, the increase in oxidative stress and the dysregulation of the matrix metalloprotease (MMP) concentration and activity. In a group of adults with obesity, divided in 2 subgroups according to the body mass index (BMI), we examined lipid peroxidation, expressed as thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), protein oxidation, expressed as protein carbonyl groups (PCs), plasma gelatinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9), and their tissue inhibitors (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2). In the whole group, as well as in the 2 subgroups (with BMI 30–35 or BMI>35) of o…

Autoimmunity Features in Patients With Non-Celiac Wheat Sensitivity.

2021

INTRODUCTION: Nonceliac wheat sensitivity (NCWS) is characterized by intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations consequent to wheat ingestion in subjects without celiac disease and wheat allergy. Few studies investigated the relationship between NCWS and autoimmunity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the frequency of autoimmune diseases (ADs) and autoantibodies in patients with NCWS. METHODS: Ninety-one patients (13 men and 78 women; mean age of 40.9 years) with NCWS, recruited in a single center, were included. Seventy-six healthy blood donors (HBD) and 55 patients with a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) unrelated to NCWS served as controls. Autoantibodies levels were mea…

The Propeller Flap for Traumatic Distal Lower-Limb Reconstruction: Risk Factors, Pitfalls, and Recommendations.

2019

BACKGROUND Defects in the distal third of the leg are difficult to cover and often require free tissue transfer, even for defects of limited sizes. Propeller flaps have been designed specifically as an alternative to free tissue transfer but at times have been associated with unacceptably high complication rates. We therefore aimed to prospectively assess our own institutional experience with this technique and to define its role in lower-limb reconstruction. METHODS All patients who had been managed with reconstruction of the distal part of the leg with a propeller flap between 2014 and 2017 were included in the study. Demographic, clinical, and follow-up data on the patients and surgical …

Lack of association of the -463 G/A myeloperoxidase promoter polymorphism with Behcet's disease in Italian patients.

2007

Objective. To investigate potential associations between the 463G/A myeloperoxidase (MPO) promoter polymorphism and susceptibility to, and clinical expression of, Behcet's disease (BD). Methods. One hundred and seventy-five Italian patients who satisfied the International Study Group criteria for BD and 235 healthy age- and sex-matched blood donors were genotyped for the 463G/A promoter polymorphism of the MPO gene by molecular methods. The patients were subgrouped according to the presence or absence of clinical manifestations. Results. The distribution of allele and genotype frequencies of the MPO 463A/G polymorphism did not differ significantly between the BD patients and the healthy…
