Quasi-2D (two-dimensional) hybrid perovskites are emerging as a new class of materials with high photoluminescence yield and improved stability compared to their three-dimensional (3D) counterparts. Nevertheless, despite their outstanding emission properties, few studies have been reported on amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and a thorough understanding of the photophysics of these layered materials is still lacking. Cholesterol binding to amyloid-β fibrils: A TEM study

There is increasing interest in the role of brain cholesterol in Alzheimer's disease and the contribution of cholesterol to the formation of amyloid plaques. This paper presents a TEM study showing the binding of soluble approximately 10 nm diameter cholesterol-PEG 600 micelles to amyloid-beta(1-42) (Abeta(1-42)) fibrils formed either in the presence of this cholesterol derivative or to preformed fibrils generated under four different fibrillogenesis conditions. A Teflon-like coating is the key for the boost in sensitivity of quartz microbalances for the tracing of airborne analytes. Since the undesired signals for the interfering compounds are suppressed and the ones for the targeted compounds (e.g., peroxide explosives) are enhanced, the PCA output is improved.

Hydrothermal synthesis of nanostructured inorganic powders by a continuous process under supercritical conditions

Abstract In this study, using a prototype of hydrothermal synthesis in subcritical and supercritical water working in a continuous way, nanometric ceramic precursors with perfectly defined composition are produced: spinel ferrites such as Fe2CoO4, TiO2 with anatase structure and also perovskite structures such as BaZrO3. The as-prepared powders are fully characterized by complementary experiments: X-ray diffraction, electron microscopies, EDX spectrometry, surface area measurement, etc. Thus, particles size, morphology, aggregation state, crystal structure, composition are investigated. Removal of Surface Oxygen Vacancies Increases Conductance Through TiO(2) Thin Films for Perovskite Solar Cells

[Image: see text] We report that UV–ozone treatment of TiO(2) anatase thin films is an efficient method to increase the conductance through the film by more than 2 orders of magnitude. The increase in conductance is quantified via conductive scanning force microscopy on freshly annealed and UV–ozone-treated TiO(2) anatase thin films on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates. The increased conductance of TiO(2) anatase thin films results in a 2% increase of the average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of methylammonium lead iodide-based perovskite solar cells. Abstract We report the results of in vivo studies in Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes in which addition of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) to their diet significantly increased their life span with respect to the control group. Furthermore, when nematodes were exposed to the pesticide paraquat, they started to die after two days, but after the addition of EVOO to their diet, both survival percentage and lifespans of paraquat-exposed nematodes increased. Since paraquat is associated with superoxide radical production, a test for scavenging this radical was performed using cyclovoltammetry and the EVOO efficiently scavenged the superoxide. International audience; Glycogen synthase 2 (Gys-2) is the ratelimiting enzyme in the storage of glycogen in liver and adipose tissue, yet little is known about regulation of Gys-2 transcription. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are transcription factors involved in the regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism and might be hypothesized to govern glycogen synthesis as well. Here, we show that Gys-2 is a direct target gene of PPARalpha, PPARbeta/delta and PPARgamma. Synthesis and antioxidant evaluation of novel silybin analogues

In this work, we evaluated the antioxidant properties of the eight novel silybin analogues for their capacity to scavenge free radicals including superoxide anion radicals and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals in vitro. Compound 7d demonstrated an excellent antioxidant effect in scavenging superoxide anion free radical with an IC50 value of 26.5 microM, while the IC50 of quercetin (the reference compound) was 38.1 microM. Compounds 7b, 7e, 7h showed certain scavenging activities for both types of free radicals.

Inhibitory effects of N-acetylcysteine on superoxide anion generation in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes.

Abstract It has been suggested that reactive oxygen species released by activated polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) in man is one mechanism of tissue injury. Therapeutic action aimed at increasing antioxidant defence mechanisms is still a clinical challenge. This study examines the activity of N-acetylcysteine, a known antioxidant, in the protection of PMN exposed in-vitro to the chemoattractant peptide fMet-Leu-Phe (FMLP), the protein kinase C activator phorbol myristate acetate or the lipid peroxidation promoter t-butyl hydroperoxide.
