Lack of Dystrophin Affects Bronchial Epithelium in mdx Mice
2016
Mild exercise training may positively affect the course of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Training causes mild bronchial epithelial injury in both humans and mice, but no study assessed the effects of exercise in mdx mice, a well known model of DMD. The airway epithelium was examined in mdx (C57BL/10ScSn-Dmdmdx) mice, and in wild type (WT, C57BL/10ScSc) mice either under sedentary conditions (mdx-SD, WT-SD) or during mild exercise training (mdx-EX, WT-EX). At baseline, and after 30 and 45 days of training (5 d/wk for 6 weeks), epithelial morphology and markers of regeneration, apoptosis, and cellular stress were assessed. The number of goblet cells in bronchial epithelium was much lower…
High atomic yield bromine-less benzylic bromination
2002
A two-phase mixture (sodium bromide, aqueous hydrogen peroxide/carbon tetrachloride or chloroform) under visible light provides a simple and convenient system for benzylic bromination of toluenes. A high atomic yield for bromine atoms is attained. Substitution of the chlorinated solvents by other more environmentally benign organic solvents has been attempted and good results are obtained for methyl pivalate.
Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalysis of β3-[(CoIIO4)W11O31(O2)4],10- the First Keggin-Based True Heteropoly Dioxygen (Peroxo) Anion. Spectrosco…
1999
Reactions of hydrogen peroxide with several lacunary polyoxometalates of the 1:11 series, XW11O39m- (X = Co3+, Ga3+, Fe3+, Si4+, and P5+), are reported. Synthetic pathways to new polyoxotungstates incorporating dioxygen moieties (peroxo and/or superoxo) are developed. The key step involves treating lacunary precursors with H2O2 in strongly buffered aqueous solutions. Upon reaction of H2O2 with α-[Co3+W11O39],9- (a) the central tetrahedral Co3+ is reduced to Co2+ and (b) each of the four unshared oxygens surrounding the vacancy are replaced by a peroxide group, yielding salts of the tetraperoxide anion β3-[(Co2+O4)W11O31(O2)4]10- (1). These results are unequivocally established by a combinat…
Electrochemistry of copper complexes with macrocyclic polyamines containing pyrazole units.
2006
The voltammetric behaviour of bi- and mono-nuclear complexes formed in solution by Cu(2+) with three polyazacyclophanes containing pyrazole units in aqueous solution is described. Cyclic and square wave voltammetric responses at glassy carbon electrodes indicate that the reduction of copper-macrocycle complexes in solution takes place in two successive one-electron per Cu transfer processes coupled with preorganization and protonation reactions that mimic the behaviour of superoxide dismutase. The electrochemistry of ternary Cu(2+)-receptor-dopamine complexes exhibits significant differences with respect to the protection of the neurotransmitter from post-electron transfer cyclization react…
Photocatalytic green synthesis of piperonal in aqueous TiO2 suspension
2014
Abstract Piperonal (heliotropine or 3,4-methylenedioxybenzaldehyde) has been synthesized by oxidizing piperonyl alcohol in aqueous UV-irradiated TiO2 suspensions. This compound was identified by GC–MS chromatography, 1H NMR and melting point determination. The other products of the photoprocess were 1,3-bis(3,4-(methylenedioxy)benzyl) ether (found in traces) and CO2, derived from the parallel pathway of photo-mineralization. Commercial and home-prepared TiO2 samples have been tested and the best selectivity (ca. 35%) was obtained by using the home-prepared ones. The reported green process allows to obtain an added value product (piperonal), upon partial oxidation of a cheap reagent.
The influence of ultrasound on the RuI3-catalyzed oxidation of phenol: Catalyst study and experimental design
2009
Abstract The influence of ultrasound at 24 kHz on the heterogeneous aqueous oxidation of phenol over RuI3 with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was studied isothermally at 298 K. Effect of ultrasound irradiation on catalytic properties and performance of RuI3 has been studied in details by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), dispersion analyzer and a surface analyzer. Turn over frequency of the catalyst was also calculated. In this work, experimental design methodology was applied to optimize the degradation of phenol in aqueous solution, while minimizing an excessive consumption of chemical reagents. The independent variables considered were the catalyst lo…
Ti(iv)-amino triphenolate complexes as effective catalysts for sulfoxidation
2010
C 3 -symmetric Ti (IV) amino triphenolate complexes efficiently catalyze, without previous activation and in excellent yields, the oxidation of sulfides at room temperature, using both CHP and the more environment friendly aqueous hydrogen peroxide as terminal oxidants, with catalyst loadings down to 0.01%. The Ti(IV) catalysts and the intermediate Ti(IV)-peroxo complexes have been characterized in solution by 1H NMR and ESI-MS techniques and via density functional studies.
Comparison of global responses to mild deficiency and excess copper levels in Arabidopsis seedlings
2013
[EN] Copper is an essential micronutrient in higher plants, but it is toxic in excess. The fine adjustments required to fit copper nutritional demands for optimal growth are illustrated by the diverse, severe symptoms resulting from copper deficiency and excess. Here, a differential transcriptomic analysis was done between Arabidopsis thaliana plants suffering from mild copper deficiency and those with a slight copper excess. The effects on the genes encoding cuproproteins or copper homeostasis factors were included in a CuAt database, which was organised to collect additional information and connections to other databases. The categories overrepresented under copper deficiency and copper e…
La fornace di pietra a Marsa Siklah
2013
Coinage and images of the imperial family: local identity and Roman rule
2013
In his speech “About harmony between the cities”, Publius Aelius Aristides, the famous orator of the mid-2nd c. A.D., admonishes the three most eminent cities of Asia — Pergamum, Ephesus and Smyrna — to put an end to their rivalries. He regards as useless their envy and struggle to be first among the cities in the province of Asia. He cautions against such rivalries, which could lead to an unwanted intervention by Roman authorities. He continues (Or. 23 [Keil = 42 Dindorf] 62): Is there a child or an old man so much out of mind that he would ignore that this is our present situation and that this is thank heaven the ruling law: one city, the first and greatest, has the whole world under one…
