ReSTOR® Diffractive versus Array®2 Zonal-progressive Multifocal Intraocular Lens: a Contralateral Comparison

2007

PURPOSE. To evaluate near and distance visual performance after implantation of a diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) (AcrySof ReSTOR ® ) or a refractive MIOL (Array ® 2) in bilateral cataract surgery. METHODS. In this prospective, comparative trial, 18 patients with bilateral cataract were selected to have lens surgery with asymmetric MIOL implantation. Eighteen eyes received ReSTOR MIOL and the 18 fellow eyes were implanted with Array 2. Five months after second lens implantation, main postoperative outcomes were uncorrected and distance corrected near visual acuities (VA). Secondary outcomes were distance VA and near acuity with power add, contrast sensitivity with and without…

Capsule measuring ring to predict capsular bag diameter and follow its course after foldable intraocular lens implantation

2003

Purpose: To evaluate the extent of capsular bag shrinkage after cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and develop a regression formula to predict postoperative capsular bag size. Setting: Eye Hospital, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. Methods: The axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth, and corneal radius in 58 eyes were measured preoperatively. Cataract surgery was by phacoemulsification followed by implantation of a 3-piece, acrylic, posterior chamber IOL. The capsular bag diameter and anterior capsulorhexis were measured intraoperatively and 1 day and 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively using a Koch capsule measuring ring (HumanOptics). Results: The me…

Effect of a closed foldable equator ring on capsular bag shrinkage in cataract surgery.

2005

To evaluate the effect of a closed foldable equator ring (CFER) versus a conventional capsular tension ring (CTR) on capsular bag shrinkage.Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. In this prospective study, 70 eyes of 70 patients were randomized to 2 groups using a 1:1 block scheme. After uneventful cataract surgery, a capsular measuring ring was implanted in all eyes to measure the capsular bag diameter in vivo. In Group 1, a CTR was implanted in the capsular bag. In Group 2, a CFER was inserted. Biometric characteristics such as axial length and the horizontal and vertical corneal radii were measured preoperatively. The capsular bag diameter and capsulor…

Anterior Capsule Opening Contraction and Late Intraocular Lens Dislocation after Cataract Surgery in Patients with Weak or Partially Absent Zonular S…

2021

Background and Objectives: To evaluate anterior capsule opening (ACO) contraction and late intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation after cataract surgery in patients with weak or partially absent zonular support and assess methods of reducing these complications. Materials and Methods: For this prospective study, we enlisted cataract surgery patients in our hospital with preoperative diagnoses of weak zonules. All patients received phacoemulsification surgery with implantation of a hydrophobic acrylic IOL and capsular tension ring (CTR). ACO reductions were measured for six months after enrolment. Data on late IOL dislocations were collected five years after enrolment of the last patient. Result…

Retinal straylight in patients with monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses

2007

Purpose To determine the differences in retinal straylight perceived by patients with monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) and patients with multifocal IOLs. Setting Vissum-Instituto de Oftalmologico de Alicante, Alicante, Spain. Methods In this prospective study, contrast sensitivity and retinal straylight were measured prospectively 6 months postoperatively in 67 eyes of 40 patients with a monofocal or multifocal IOL. In the monofocal group, a ThinOptX IOL (ThinOptX, Inc.) was implanted in 12 eyes and an Acri.Smart 48 S IOL (Acri.Tec) in 20 eyes. In the multifocal IOL group, a ReZoom IOL (Advanced Medical Optics) was implanted in 13 eyes and a ReSTOR IOL (Alcon Laboratories) in 22 eyes. Re…

Predictability of intraocular lens power calculation after small-incision lenticule extraction for myopia

2019

PURPOSE To evaluate and compare the predictability of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation after small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for myopia and myopic astigmatism. SETTING Department of Ophthalmology, Philipps University of Marburg, Marburg, Germany. DESIGN Retrospective comparative case series. METHODS Preoperative evaluation included optical biometry using IOLMaster 500 and corneal tomography using Pentacam HR. The corneal tomography measurements were repeated at 3 months postoperatively. The change of spherical equivalent due to SMILE was calculated by the manifest refraction at corneal plane (SMILE-Dif). A theoretical model, involving the virtual implantation of the same…

Correlation between optics quality of multifocal intraocular lenses and visual acuity

2009

Purpose To study the relationship between the optics quality of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) and distance-corrected near, intermediate, and distance visual acuity to determine the degree to which optics quality must change to produce a significant difference in visual acuity. Setting Fundacion Oftalmologica del Mediterraneo, Valencia, Spain. Methods Monocular distance-corrected visual acuity (decimal and logMAR) was measured at 4 m, 70 cm, and 30 cm under photopic and mesopic conditions in eyes with 1 of 3 multifocal IOL models. Visual acuity versus the “average modulation” of the IOL was assessed. Results The pupil diameter and patient age were similar between the 3 IOL groups (20 …

Phacoemulsification and Vitrectomy with the Erbium: or Neodymium:YAG-Laser

2002

Summary There are an increasing number of applications for Erbium:YAG and Neodymium:YAG lasers in opthalmology. Laser phacoemulsification and Erbium-laser vitrectomy are of major interest. We report the underlying technology and more than 1-year-experience using the PHACOLASE (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany, 10–100 Hz frequency, 5–50 mJ single pulse energy) for phacoemulsification and pars plana vitrectomy and the Lyla-Dodick laser photolysis (A.R.C. Laser, Eckental-Forth, Germany, 1–20 Hz, up to 8 mJ single pulse energy). The Erbium:YAG laser and Neodymium:YAG laser enabled us to extract lenses with up to medium hard nuclei. Moreover, the Erbium laser enabled fast vitrectomy with little…
