Characterization of phenolic pellets for ESR dosimetry in photon beam radiotherapy.

2017

We report a study of the dosimetric features of phenolic compounds for applications in radiation therapy dosimetry of clinical photon beams by using ESR spectroscopy. After the optimization of the ESR readout parameters, basic dosimetric properties (such as intra-batch reproducibility, dose-response, sensitivity, linearity, dose rate dependence, tissue-equivalence and signal stability) of laboratory-made phenolic dosimeters in form of pellets were investigated. Furthermore, these dosimeters were tested for measuring the depth dose profile of a 6 MV clinical photon beam. The results reported show that these dosimeters are promising materials for ESR dosimetric applications in radiation thera…

Phenol compounds as new materials for electron spin resonance dosimetry in radiotherapy

2016

Introduction: Among the various dosimetric techniques used for characterizing the radiation beams used in radiation therapy, the electron spin resonance (ESR) arouses increasing interest for applications in various therapy procedures. Free radicals are known to be produced when a compound is irradiated with ionizing radiations. The concentration of radiationinduced free radicals is proportional to the absorbed dose and this allows for dosimetric measurements through ESR technique which enables to quantitatively determine the radical concentration. In this work we report the ESR investigation of phenol pellets and thin films exposed to various types of radiation beams (clinical photon and el…

ANALYSIS OF TOTAL ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY AND TOTAL PHENOLIC CONTENT (TP) DURING RIPENING OF TWO SICILIAN RED GRAPES VARIETIES

2011

ANALYSIS OF TOTAL ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY AND TOTAL PHENOLIC CONTENT (TP) DURING RIPENING OF TWO SICILIAN RED GRAPES VARIETIES During the last decade the interest for polyphenols has increased considerably because numerous epidemiological studies, supported by several short term controlled randomised clinical trials, have suggested associations between consumption of polyphenol-rich food or beverages and the prevention of certain chronic diseases associated with the oxidative stress condition (1). In a our previous study on several samples of Sicilian red wine we found that the total polyphenol parameter can not to characterize the nutraceutical properties of a wine by only because the correla…

Cytosporones, coumarins, and an alkaloid from the endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis sp. isolated from the Chinese mangrove plant Rhizophora mucronata

2009

Chemical examination of the endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis sp., isolated from the leaves of the Chinese mangrove Rhizophora mucronata, yielded 11 new compounds including cytosporones J-N (1-3, 5-6), five new coumarins pestalasins A-E (8-12), and a new alkaloid named pestalotiopsoid A (14), along with the known compounds cytosporone C (4), dothiorelone B (7), and 3-hydroxymethyl-6,8-dimethoxycoumarin (13). The structures of the new compounds were unambiguously elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic data analysis.

S2k guideline for treatment of cutaneous lupus erythematosus - guided by the European Dermatology Forum (EDF) in cooperation with the European Academ…

2016

Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) is a rare inflammatory autoimmune disease with heterogeneous clinical manifestations. To date, no therapeutic agents have been licensed specifically for patients with this disease entity, and topical and systemic drugs are mostly used 'off-label'. The aim of the present guideline was to achieve a broad consensus on treatment strategies for patients with CLE by a European subcommittee, guided by the European Dermatology Forum (EDF) and supported by the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV). In total, 16 European participants were included in this project and agreed on all recommendations. Topical corticosteroids remain the mainstay of trea…

Techno-economic analysis of a membrane filtration process for the phenolic compound extraction

2016

In this paper the economical feasibility of a system based on the membrane filtration process for the phenolic compound extraction and the subsequent polyphenolic enrichment of the olive oil, have been assessed. In particular, the analysis of the investment profitability of a case study was presented to determine the optimal incremental price of the olive oil obtained by the enrichment process

INTERSPECIFIC VARIATION IN TOTAL PHENOLIC CONTENT IN TEMPERATE BROWN ALGAE

2015

The aim of this study was to focus on interspecific variation of total phenolic contents (TPC) in temperate brown algae also considering their relationship with environmental conditions. In particular, we compared the TPC of four species characterized by different thallus morphology, growth cycle and bathymetric level: Cystoseira amentacea (C. Agardh) Bory, Cystoseira compressa (Esper) Gerloff & Nizamuddin, Dictyopteris polypodioides (A.P. De Candolle) J.V. Lamouroux and Padina pavonica (Linnaeus) Thivy, collected in summer 2011 from the north-western coast of Sicily.

The phenolic compounds of olive oil: structure, biological activity and beneficial effects on human health

2005

AbstractThe Mediterranean diet is rich in vegetables, cereals, fruit, fish, milk, wine and olive oil and has salutary biological functions. Epidemiological studies have shown a lower incidence of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases and certain kinds of cancer in the Mediterranean area. Olive oil is the main source of fat, and the Mediterranean diet's healthy effects can in particular be attributed not only to the high relationship between unsaturated and saturated fatty acids in olive oil but also to the antioxidant property of its phenolic compounds. The main phenolic compounds, hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein, which give extra-virgin olive oil its bitter, pungent taste, have powerful a…

Application of high Power ultrasounds during red wine vinification

2017

[EN] Wine colour is one of the main organoleptic characteristics influencing its quality. It is of special interest in red vinifications due to the economic resources that wineries have to invest for the extraction of the phenolic compounds responsible for wine colour, compounds that are mainly located inside the skin cell vacuoles, where the volatile compounds are also found. The transfer of phenolic compounds from grapes to must during vinification is closely related to the type of grapes and the winemaking technique. During traditional winemaking, grapes are crushed and skin macerated for several days, with pumps overs to facilitate the colour extraction. To increase this extraction, som…
