While iontophoresis is typically associated with drug delivery across the skin, the symmetry of the technique permits its application to the essentially noninvasive withdrawal of biologically important analytes from the subcutaneous space to the body's surface. Abstract It has been suggested that reactive oxygen species released by activated polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) in man is one mechanism of tissue injury. Therapeutic action aimed at increasing antioxidant defence mechanisms is still a clinical challenge. Anion-Exchange Properties of Trifluoroacetate and Triflate Salts of N-Alkylammonium Resorcinarenes

The synthesis of N-benzyl- and N-cyclohexylammonium resorcinarene trifluoroacetate (TFA) and triflate (OTf) salt receptors was investigated. Solid-state analysis by single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the N-alkylammonium resorcinarene salts (NARSs) with different upper substituents had different cavity sizes and different affinities for anions. Influence of nitrogen and carbon sources on the production of ochratoxin A by ochratoxigenic strains of Aspergillus spp. isolated from grapes.

This work studies the influence of nitrogen and carbon source on ochratoxin A production by three Aspergillus isolates A. ochraceus (Aso2), A. carbonarius (Ac25) and A. tubingensis (Bo66), all isolated from grapes. A basal medium (0.01 g/l FeSO4.7H2O, 0.5 g/l MgSO4.7H2O, 0.5 g/l Na2HPO4.2H2O, 1.0 g/l KCl) was prepared. Cloning and characterization of the phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase β subunit gene fromCandida albicans

A Candida albicans expression library was constructed from RNA isolated from regenerating protoplasts. A 1.4-kb cDNA clone was used to isolate a genomic fragment. Sequence analysis revealed an open reading frame of 593 amino acids with an overall identity of 63.6% with the phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase beta subunit (FRS1) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We named it CaFRS1. It is located in a single copy in chromosome R, SfiI fragment M. Its expression showed a decrease during the cell wall regeneration process in protoplasts of both yeast and mycelial cells of C. albicans, suggesting its requirement thereof in initial steps of the cell wall synthesis.

Zinc Binding Sites Conserved in Short Neuropeptides Containing a Diphenylalanine Motif

A diphenylalanine motif in peptides plays a crucial role in supramolecular systems. The current work represents a novel strategy in which a diphenylalanine motif in the central domain of neuropeptides conserves the specific Zn2+ binding site and prevents "hopping" of the Zn2+ ion between alternative metal binding sites. Alternative metal binding sites may also include carboxylic atoms in the terminal domains of a peptide. Therefore, one needs to design a peptide in which the metal will not bind the carboxylic groups in the terminal domains. Herein, we propose that engineering and designing peptides with a diphenylalanine motif in the central domain may yield excellent metal chelators.

The complex formation of a tetraammonium C1-resorcinarene (R+4HCl) was studied using electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (ESI-FTICR) mass spectrometry. Although R+4HCl easily loses its counter ions in the ESI process, a neutral self-assembled structure with an intramolecular circular hydrogen-bonded 16-membered -N(+)-H ... X(-) ... Resorcinarene bis-crown silver complexes and their application as antibacterial Langmuir-Blodgett films

Silver complexes of a cation binding supramolecular host, resorcinarene bis-crown (CNBC5) with propyl, nonyl, decyl and undecyl alkyl chains were investigated by NMR titration, picrate extraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Binding studies showed that both 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 (host-Ag(+)) complexes are present in solution with only a slight effect of the lower rim alkyl chain length on the binding constants (log K 4.0-4.2 for 1 : 2 complexes). Solid state complexes of the resorcinarene bis-crowns bearing either C(3) or C(11) chains were obtained. Streptolysin O-permeabilized granulocytes shed L-selectin concomitantly with ceramide generation via neutral sphingomyelinase

Abstract Cleavage of membrane-associated L-selectin regulates leukocyte rolling on vascular endothelium at sites of inflammation. We report that rapid and massive shedding of L-selectin occurs from granulocytes attacked by the pore-forming bacterial toxin streptolysin O (SLO). Shedding was not induced by an SLO mutant that retained binding capacity but lacked pore-forming activity. Cells permeabilized with SLO exhibited a 1.5-fold increase in the activity of neutral sphingomyelinase, which was accompanied by increased ceramide formation. Effects of irrigation on fruit ripening behavior and metabolic changes in olive

Olive (Olea europaea, cv Leccino) fruits grown under different water regimes were analyzed by metabolomics and specific transcript accumulation analyses. The fruit from non-irrigated (rain-fed) and irrigated trees cultivated under field conditions, with a seasonal water amount equivalent to the calculated crop evapotranspiration (ETc) was compared in the last developmental phase and, in particular, at commercial harvest.
