Familiarity changes as a function of perceptual shifts.

This experiment compares the yes-­no and forced recognition tests as methods of measuring familiarity. Participants faced a phase of 3 study-­test recognition trials in which they studied words using all the letters of the alphabet (overlapping condition, O), and an additional phase in which targets and lures did not share any letters (non-­overlapping condition, NO). Finally, subjects performed a forced-­choice task in which they had to choose one of two new words, each from one of the subsets (Parkin et al., 2001). On stress production in whispered Finnish

We have compared sentence stress production in normal phonation and whisper in two native speakers of Finnish using acoustical analysis, esophageal pressure measurements and electromyography. The average peak values of the fundamental frequency, intensity, esophageal pressure and the EMG recordings from the thyroarytenoid and cricothyroid muscles were measured and their intercorrelations were calculated. In normal speech the cricothyroid activity and the subglottal pressure showed a significant correlation with the peak values of the acoustical indicators of stress for both subjects. Acoustic properties and perception of minimal contrasts in Valencian Catalan sibilants

El valencià estàndard presenta tres consonants fricatives sibilants: /s/, /z/ i /S/.Mentre que el contrast entre /z/ i /s/ sembla indiscutible, l’existència d’unaoposició real entre /S/ i /s/ és més dubtosa. Auditory event-related potentials measured in kindergarten predict later reading problems at school age.

Identifying children at risk for reading problems or dyslexia at kindergarten age could improve support for beginning readers. Brain event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured for temporally complex pseudowords and corresponding non-speech stimuli from 6.5-year-old children who participated in behavioral literacy tests again at 9 years in the second grade. Children who had reading problems at school age had larger N250 responses to speech and non-speech stimuli particularly at the left hemisphere. Reading skill and neural processing accuracy improvement after a 3-hour intervention in preschoolers with difficulties in reading-related skills

This study aimed at determining whether an intervention game developed for strengthening phonological awareness has a remediating effect on reading skills and central auditory processing in 6-year-old preschool children with difficulties in reading-related skills. After a 3-hour training only, these children made a greater progress in reading-related skills than did their matched controls who did mathematical exercises following comparable training format. A computer-based Pinyin intervention for disadvantaged children in China: Effects on Pinyin skills, phonological awareness, and character reading.

Pinyin is an alphabetic script that denotes pronunciations of Chinese characters. Studies have shown that Pinyin instruction enhances both phonological awareness (e.g., Shu et al., Developmental Science, 2008, 11, 171-181) and character reading (e.g., Lin et al., Psychological Science, 2010, 21, 1117-1122) in Chinese children. Does Tonal Information Affect the Early Stages of Visual-Word Processing in Thai?

Thai offers a unique opportunity to investigate the role of lexical tone processing during visual-word recognition, as tone is explicitly expressed in its script. Event-Related Potentials and Consonant Differentiation in Newborns with Familial Risk for Dyslexia

We measured event-related potentials (ERPs) to synthetic consonant-vowel syllables (/ba/, /da/, /ga/) from 26 newborns with familial risk for dyslexia and 23 control infants participating in the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Dyslexia. The syllables were presented with equal probability and with interstimulus intervals ranging from 3,010 to 7,285 ms. Analyses of averaged ERPs from the latencies identified on the basis of principal component analysis (PCA) revealed significant group differences in stop-consonant processing in several latency ranges.
