Quantitative measurements of concentration kinetics of iodine atomic species in a I2+O3 system are possible. The 183.038 nm resonance absorption transition of I(2P3/2) in previously developed EDL has been studied; dependence of self-absorption and self-reversal on iodine partial pressure in the discharge volume has been measured. [EN] The electrochemical and photophysical properties of a family of conjugated ligands and their iridium(III) cyclometallated complexes are described. They consist of a series of monocationic Ir-III bis-2-phenylpyridine complexes with p-phenylethynyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands of different length. The structure of these ligands includes terminal acetylthiol or pyridine groups, which can provide good electrical contacts between metal electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry, absorption and emission spectroscopy, laser flash photolysis and density functional theory calculations reveal that the high conjugation of the diimine ligand affords small energy gaps between the frontier orbitals. Drug photoallergy is a matter of current concern. It involves the formation of drug-protein photoadducts (photoantigens) that may ultimately trigger an immunological response. Tyrosine residues appear to be key binding sites in proteins. The present work has investigated the photobinding of tiaprofenic and (TPA) and the closely related isomer suprofen (SUP) to proteins and cells by means of radioactive labeling and drug-directed antibodies. Abstract The presence of (±)α-pinene, (+)β-pinene, (+)3-carene, and R-(+)limonene terpenes in wastewater of a citrus transformation factory was detected and analyzed, in a previous study, by using Solid Phase Micro-extraction (SPME) followed by GC analyses. Purpose of that research was to compare the genotoxic responses of mixtures of terpenes with the genotoxicity of the individual compounds, and the biological effects of actual wastewater. Genotoxicity was evaluated in the Salmonella reversion assay (Ames test) and in V79 cells by Comet assay. A simplified high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure is described for the determination of furosemide (4-chloro-N-furfuryl-5-sulphamoylanthranillic acid), which makes use of UV detection, a C18, reversed-phase column, and micellar mobile phases of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and 1-propanol at pH 3 buffered with phosphate system. The most adequate experimental conditions to handle furosemide solutions in the analytical laboratory are studied. Role of Mobile Interstitial Oxygen Atoms in Defect Processes in Oxides: Interconversion between Oxygen-Associated Defects inSiO2Glass

The role of mobile interstitial oxygen atoms (${\mathrm{O}}^{0}$) in defect processes in oxides is demonstrated by interconversion between the oxygen dangling bond and the peroxy radical (POR) in ${\mathrm{S}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ glass. Superstoichiometric ${\mathrm{O}}^{0}$ was created by ${\mathrm{F}}_{2}$ laser photolysis of the interstitial ${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$. On annealing above $300\text{ }\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\mathrm{C}$, ${\mathrm{O}}^{0}$ migrated and converted the oxygen dangling bond to POR. Exposure to 5.0 eV light converted POR back to a pair of the oxygen dangling bond and ${\mathrm{O}}^{0}$ (quantum yield: $\ensuremath{\sim}0.1$). These findings suggest that…

An updated version of FATEMOD, a multimedia fugacity model for environmental fate of organic chemicals, was set up to assess environmental behaviour of three pharmaceuticals in northern Lake Päijänne, Finland. Concentrations of ibuprofen, diclofenac, and carbamazepine were estimated at various depths at two sites: near a wastewater treatment plant and 3.5 km downstream the plant. When compared with environmental sampling data from corresponding depths and sites, the predicted concentrations, ranging from nanograms to hundreds of nanograms per litre, were found to be in good agreement. [EN] Recently, sunscreen-based drug photocages have been introduced to provide UV protection to photoactive drugs, thus increasing their photosafety. Here, combined experimental and theoretical studies performed on a photocage based on the commercial UVA filter avobenzone (AB) and on the photosensitizing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ketoprofen (KP) are presented unveiling the photophysical processes responsible for the light-triggered release. Abstract The aim of this work was to study the biological effects of four monoterpenes, i.e. α-pinene, β-pinene, 3-carene and d -limonene present in the wastewater of a citrus transformation factory. The study was carried out by exposing V79 Chinese hamster cells to single terpene or to the mixture of four terpenes at concentrations corresponding to those in the wastewater evaluated by head space solid phase micro extraction and gas chromatography (HS-SPME-GC) analyses. Treatments with single or combined terpenes similarly affected cell vitality, but only the combined treatments induced the 6-thioguanine resistant mutants.
