Random Laser Based on TiO2–Nanomembranes

We demonstrated directional random laser emission from a dye-doped polymer film in the presence of a scattering medium consisting of TiO 2 nanomembranes. Evidence for coexistence of extended and localized modes are presented.

Silencing and enhancement of second-harmonic generation in optical gap antennas

International audience; Amplifying local electromagnetic fields by engineering optical interactions between individual constituents of an optical antenna is considered fundamental for efficient nonlinear wavelength conversion in nanometer-scale devices. In contrast to this general statement we show that high field enhancement does not necessarily lead to an optimized nonlinear activity. In particular, we demonstrate that second-harmonic responses generated at strongly interacting optical gap antennas can be significantly suppressed. Enhanced resonant force between two entangled identical atoms in a photonic crystal

We consider the resonant interaction energy and force between two identical atoms, one in an excited state and the other in the ground state, placed inside a photonic crystal. The atoms, having the same orientation of their dipole moment, are supposed prepared in their symmetrical state and interact with the quantum electromagnetic field. We consider two specific models of photonic crystals: a one-dimensional model and an isotropic model. Combined Analysis of OFDM-UWB Transmission in Hybrid Wireless-Optical Access Networks

[EN] The hybrid wireless-optical transmission of ultra-wideband signals employing orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing modulation (OFDM) ultra-wideband (UWB) as defined in the ECMA-368 standard is experimentally analyzed in this letter. The OFDM-UWB signals provide 400 Mb/s per user at optical distances from 5 to 50 km on standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). The analysis includes the wireless radiation from 0 to 3 m after optical transmission. The results indicate a maximum error-vector-magnitude degradation of 2.5 dB measured at 1.5-m radio after 50-km SSMF optical transmission for the first two UWB channels. This degradation translates to 1-m maximum wireless-reach penalty.

Label-free wavelength and phase detection based SMS fiber immunosensors optimized with cladding etching

The performance of E-SMS (Etched Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode) optical fiber structures as immunosensors has been assessed by the implementation of antibody/antigen immunoassays. Through this procedure it has been proven that E-SMS structures are effective and suitable optical platforms for label-free biosensing. Using the phase shift and tracking the wavelength response it was found that the fabricated E-SMS devices exhibited limits of detection (LOD) down up to concentrations of 0.2mg/L of antigens in solution. AbstractPhotonics enables to develop simple lab experiments that mimic water rogue wave generation phenomena, as well as relativistic gravitational effects such as event horizons, gravitational lensing and Hawking radiation. The basis for analog gravity experiments is light propagation through an effective moving medium obtained via the nonlinear response of the material. Quantum pattern recognition in photonic circuits

This paper proposes a machine learning method to characterize photonic states via a simple optical circuit and data processing of photon number distributions, such as photonic patterns. The input states consist of two coherent states used as references and a two-mode unknown state to be studied. We successfully trained supervised learning algorithms that can predict the degree of entanglement in the two-mode state as well as perform the full tomography of one photonic mode, obtaining satisfactory values in the considered regression metrics.
