Five different type I keratins from a teleost fish, the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, have been sequenced by cDNA cloning and identified at the protein level by peptide mass mapping using MALDI-MS. This showed that the entire range of type I keratins detected biochemically in this fish has now been sequenced. Three of the keratins are expressed in the epidermis (subtype Ie), whereas the other two occur in simple epithelia and mesenchymal cells (subtype Is). RNAs of the most recent foot-and-mouth disease virus isolated in Spain (A5Sp86) during the 1986 outbreak, and of the three vaccine strains in use at that time in that country, have been compared. Although these viruses are serologically indistinguishable, differences have been found among them by T1 fingerprinting. This genetic heterogeneity affects the immunogenic VP1 gene, with amino acid changes located at the carboxyterminal end of the molecule. Novel recombinant GII.P16_GII.13 and GII.P16_GII.3 norovirus strains in Italy.

Novel norovirus strains are continuously emerging worldwide. Molecular investigation and phylogenetic analysis identified GII.P16 recombinant noroviruses from the stools of four Italian children with gastroenteritis. The capsid gene was characterized as either GII.13 or GII.3. The GII.P16_GII.13 Italian strains were closely related to German strains involved in a large outbreak in the second half of 2012 and the Italian strains are the first recorded occurrence of GII.P16_GII.13 in Europe.

From the zebrafish Danio rerio, we have cDNA cloned and sequenced a novel type II and a novel type I keratin, termed DreK8 and DreK18, respectively. The land snail genus Tudorella shows a peculiar disjunct distribution around the western Mediterranean coasts. Despite high phenotypic plasticity, only two species with a disputed number of subspecific taxa are currently recognised. We delimited the species with mitochondrial (COI & 16S) and nuclear (ITS-1) markers based on the unified species concept and suggested that there are eight species in the genus, two of them currently undescribed. Phylogenetic relationships of 14 species and one variety of the genus Polygonatum as well as three species of the genus Disporopsis and Heteropolygonatum roseolum were analyzed based on mapped restriction site variation in a PCR-amplified chloroplast genome region, trnK. In agreement with earlier taxonomic treatments it was found that Disporopsis and Heteropolygonatum should be distinguished from Polygonatum at generic level, and that P. sect. Polygonatum can be recognized as a monophyletic group. Earlier series concepts in P. sect.
