Mediterranean Diet and Physical Activity Decrease the Initiation of Cardiovascular Drug Use in High Cardiovascular Risk Individuals: A Cohort Study
2021
Our aim was to assess whether long-term adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) were associated with a lower initiation of cardiovascular drug use. We studied the association between cumulative average of MedDiet adherence and LTPA and the risk of cardiovascular drug initiation in older adults at high cardiovascular risk (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea trial participants) non-medicated at baseline: glucose-lowering drugs (n = 4437), antihypertensives (n = 2145), statins (n = 3977), fibrates (n = 6391), antiplatelets (n = 5760), vitamin K antagonists (n = 6877), antianginal drugs (n = 6837), and cardiac glycosides (n = 6954). One-point increas…
Optimising training adaptations and performance in military environment.
2018
Abstract Objectives Worldwide decreases in physical fitness and increases in body fat among youth have set challenges for armed forces to recruit physically capable soldiers. Therefore, knowledge of optimizing physical adaptation and performance through physical training is vital. In addition, maintaining or improving physical performance among professional soldiers in various military environments is crucial for overall military readiness. The present review focuses on the effects of military training on physical performance by searching for optimal methods to do it. Design and methods Review article based on selected literature searches using the main keywords ‘physical performance’ and ‘…

Oxygen uptake kinetics and energy system's contribution around maximal lactate steady state swimming intensity
2017
Made available in DSpace on 2018-11-26T17:20:55Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2017-02-28 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Ministry of Education of Brazil The purpose of this study was to examine the oxygen uptake ((V) over dotO(2)) kinetics and the energy systems' contribution at 97.5, 100 and 102.5% of the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) swimming intensity. Ten elite female swimmers performed three-to-five 30 min submaximal constant swimming bouts at imposed paces for the determination of the swimming velocity (v) at 100% MLSS based on a 7 x 200 m intermittent incremental protocol until voluntary exhaustion to find the v associated…
Predictor variables for half marathon race time in recreational female runners
2011
Import JabRef | WosArea General and Internal Medicine; International audience; INTRODUCTION: The relationship between skin-fold thickness and running performance has been investigated from 100 m to the marathon distance, except the half marathon distance. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether anthropometry characteristics or training practices were related to race time in 42 recreational female half marathoners to determine the predictor variables of half-marathon race time and to inform future novice female half marathoners. METHODS: Observational field study at the 'Half Marathon Basel' in Switzerland. RESULTS: In the bivariate analysis, body mass (r = 0.60), body mass index (r = 0.48), body …
Heart rate responses during the modified six-minute walk test among Special Olympics athletes
2021
Objective: The construct validity of the modified six-minute walk test (m6MWT) was examined by addressing the following questions: 1) do participants attain a steady state plateau in heart rate (HR) within the range of 110-150 beats per minute? 2) at what percentage of their predicted HR maximum were participants during each minute of the test? Material and Methods: Participants were 36 (male=56%) Special Olympics athletes aged 34.4 years (SD = 12.7). Following familiarization, participants completed the m6MWT while wearing a Polar Team 2 heart rate monitor. Results: By the end of the first minute, average heart rate was 120bpm, and a factorial repeated measures ANOVA revealed that steady s…
A WEB-BASED SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM ON ADOLESCENTS’ LIFESTYLES AND OBESITY PREVENTION: ASSO-FTB PRELIMINARY FINDINGS. THE ASSO PROJECT.
2013
The ASSO Project (Adolescents and Surveillance System for Obesity prevention), financed by the Italian Ministry of Health, aims to develop a surveillance system structured on adolescents lifestyles. It is a prospective study with online data collection, simultaneous descriptive data analysis and real time report. The ASSO-Toolkit is made of questionnaires, forms and a fitness test battery. The aims of this study is to evaluate the predictive validity, the criterion validity and the reliability of ASSO-FTB, in other words to assess how well the system operates to meet its objectives. The ASSO-FTB consists of 20mSRT (Shuttle Run Test) to estimate cardiorespiratory fitness, the handgrip streng…
Znaczenie rehabilitacji w ocenie poziomu sprawności i wydolności tlenowej pensjonariuszek Domów Pomocy Społecznej
2017
Cel pracy. Celem prac była ocena wpływu stosowanej rehabilitacji u pensjonariuszek Domu Pomocy Społecznej na poziom sprawności i wydolności aerobowej. Materiał i metodyka. Przebadano 17 kobiet uczęszczających i 13 nieuczęszczających na zajęcia rehabilitacji. Przedział wieku badanych wynosił 80-84 lata. Do oceny wykorzystano test SPPB oraz 6-minutowy test marszu. Wyniki. Wszystkie badane cechy służące do oceny poziomu sprawności wydolności aerobowej różnią się istotnie między dwiema badanymi grupami. Lepsze wyniki uzyskały osoby z grupy uczęszczającej na zajęcia rehabilitacji. Wnioski. 1. Systematycznie prowadzone zajęcia rehabilitacji ruchowej u badanych kobiet powodują uzyskanie wyższego p…
Proposed Protocol for Field Testing of Endurance Fitness of Young Labrador Retrievers
2023
The number of dogs and, with it, dog sports are growing in popularity, and the training of dogs begins at an early age. Although fitness testing is an imperative part of purposeful training and sports, to our knowledge, no objective field tests are available for measuring young dogs’ endurance fitness. The aim of this study is to describe a simple, easy-to-repeat, and inexpensive way to test training intervention effects on endurance fitness in young Labrador Retrievers. Healthy client-owned 16-week-old Labrador Retrievers will be recruited and divided into test and control groups. The test group will have an eight-week training program followed by a four-week detraining period, while the c…
Brain, cognition and physically active lifestyle in healthy ageing
2018
Normal ageing is accompanied by profound changes in brain structure and declines in the automatic processing of sensory stimuli, which in turn lead to altered cognitive performance. However, behaviour and lifestyle factors, such as physical activity, may help to maintain the brain’s structural connectivity and function, as well as cognitive functioning in old age. Study I examined the effects of age on the brain’s capability to detect changes in somatosensory stimuli by recording event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to electrical stimulation of different fingers in young and older adults. The results of Study I show that somatosensory mismatch response (sMMR) was attenuated in amplit…
