Ultrasound-guided percutaneous treatment of calcific bursitis of the medial collateral ligament of the knee

2021

Calcific bursitis of the medial collateral ligament of the knee is an infrequent pathological condition. In 1988, Kerlan and Glousman identified the clinical features of medial collateral ligament bursitis. Pain and knee functions limitation are the clinical symptoms that are most frequently encountered during the reactive inflammatory process in the bursa, that characterizes the reabsorption phases of the calcific material. It is well documented in the literature that the maximum efficacy of ultrasound-guided percutaneous treatment, with significant reduction or disappearance of symptoms, occurs precisely in this phase. The case report presented in this study confirms the validity as a the…

Nutrition in the genomics era: cardiovascular disease risk and the Mediterranean diet.

2007

The effect of dietary changes on phenotypes (i.e., plasma lipid measures, body weight and blood pressure) differs significantly between individuals. This phenomenon has been more extensively researched in relation to changes in dietary fat and plasma lipid concentrations for the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to other pathological conditions. Although common knowledge associates low fat diets with reductions in total and plasma LDL cholesterol, the clinical evidence shows dramatic inter-individual differences in response that are partially due to genetic factors. The discovery of the cardioprotective and other healthy properties of the Mediterranean diet has popularized…

European vestibular experiments on the Spacelab-1 mission: 7. Ocular counterrolling measurements pre- and post-flight.

1986

The static ocular counterrolling (OCR) of the four scientific crew members in the first Spacelab mission was measured during baseline-data-collection before and after the flight of SL-1. It was presumed that the modification of otolithic responses during spaceflight will be reflected in specific changes of the OCR-gain on the first days after recovery. The magnitude of OCR was determined analysing colour-transparencies of subjects right eyes that were produced in different positions of lateral body tilt. In general, one subject did not show any changes at all; three subjects exhibited a significant decrease of OCR-gain after exposure to weightlessness, whereby differences could be found bet…

Evaluation of the Complexity of Myocardial Activation During Ventricular Fibrillation. An Experimental Study

2013

A B S T R A C T Introduction and objectives: An experimental model is used to analyze the characteristics of ventricular fibrillation in situations of variable complexity, establishing relationships among the data produced by different methods for analyzing the arrhythmia. Methods: In 27 isolated rabbit heart preparations studied under the action of drugs (propranolol and KB-R7943) or physical procedures (stretching) that produce different degrees of change in the complexity of myocardial activation during ventricular fibrillation, use was made of spectral, morphological, and mapping techniques to process the recordings obtained with epicardial multielectrodes. Results: The complexity of ve…

Prognostic value of blood lactate in critically ill patients

1984

Hyperlactatemia is frequently observed in critically ill patients. A correlation of blood lactate concentrations and outcome of patients has been proven in circulatory shock, circulatory arrest, acute myocardial infarction, acute hypnotic drug poisoning and severe pancreatitis. However, the prognostic relevance of hyperlactatemia yields from statistical examinations in larger groups of patients. It should not be misused as a reliable prognostic sign in the individual patient, but is of high value in comparing groups of patients. In individual patients, hyperlactatemia is a useful indicator pointing to the severity of illness and to superimposed complications. Blood lactate is of considerabl…

Brain energy metabolism in global brain oedema.

1978

Different degrees of severity in global brain oedema were induced by varying amounts of water intoxication (50, 100, 150, and 200 ml Aqua dest./kg b.wt. intravenously) in groups of six cats, which were functionally nephrectomized. Animals loaded with physiological saline and sham-operated served as controls. Two hours following the water load, the tissue concentrations of CrP, ATP, ADP, AMP, pyruvate, glucose, and lactate were determined by optical enzymatic analysis. The results show disturbances in brain energy metabolism dependent on the severity of the brain oedema. The high energy compounds and in consequence the ATP/ADP-ratio, and respectively the energy charge potential, fall in dire…

Neuronavigation in der Zentralregion: Bedeutung für einzelne Operationsphasen bei verschiedenen Prozesslokalisationen

2000

The neurosurgical treatment of space occupying processes in the central area bears a relatively high risk of either postoperative neurological deficits ("radical approach") or of residual tumor ("conservative approach"). Therefore, special techniques of intraoperative topographic orientation (image-guided surgery) play an important role here. The possible impact of neuronavigation on different neurosurgical steps (craniotomy, corticotomy, localization of the process, definition of borders of resection) was studied in relation to the site of pathology (extraaxial, intraaxial/superficial, intraaxial/deep) in 46 patients harbouring space occupying lesions of the central area. In intraaxial pat…

Dichotic listening: elimination of the right ear advantage under a dual task procedure.

1997

The aim of this article is to investigate the attentional effect on the dichotic listening (DL) performance when doing a simultaneous right hemisphere task. A group of 30 right-handed male participants had a standard DL test followed by a dual task procedure that consisted of a manipulospatial discrimination through the left hand and performed while doing the DL test. Participants showed the typical right ear advantage (REA), which lost its significance when they were confronted with the dual task, presumably due to the manipulospatial performance. The elimination of the REA was mainly due to facilitation of the left ear responses. Results are discussed in terms of Kinsbourne's model and ot…
