GC and GC-–MS Analysis of Volatile Compounds From Ballota nigra subsp. uncinata Collected in Aeolian Islands, Sicily (Southern Italy)
2020
In the present study, the chemical composition of the essential oils from aerial parts of Ballota nigra subsp. uncinata (Bég.) Patzak collected in Sicily was evaluated by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry. The main components of the oil were ( E)-phytol (20.0%), α-pinene (9.0%), hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (5.7%), and α-selinene (5.1%). Cluster analysis of the essential oil compositions of all the taxa belonging to B. nigra s.l. group was performed.
Microscopic findings and soil genetic “indicators” in support of pedoarchaeological studies
2015
Archaeologists use historical artefacts and archaeological records to reconstruct the communities that produced them and the environment in which they lived. Soil protects our buried or damaged heritage of archaeological and historic remains from depletion, damage, and any disturbance. Here are presented some preliminary results obtained in the framework of the FP7 Project "MEditerranean MOntainous LAndscapes: an historical approach to cultural Heritage based on traditional agrosystems (MEMOLA)" where ancient soils horizons are themselves archaeological records. In order to implement the MEMOLA archaeological study and to identify soil genetic "indicators", two integrated approaches were us…
Phytochemical study of plant species : Phytolacca rugosa, P. icosandra, Cestrum ruizteranianum et Ganophyllum giganteum
2011
Phytochemical analysis of the MeOH/H2O (7:3) of the fruits of Phytolacca rugosa, P. icosandra and Cestrum ruizteranianum, as well as the barks of Ganophyllum giganteum, leaded to the isolation and structural characterization of twenty three (1-23) compounds. From P. rugosa, four (1-4) known triterpenoidal saponins belonging to the serjanic acid series were obtained, all saponins are reported for the first time for P. rugosa. P. icosandra was studied and eight compounds were isolated, two triterpenic acids [spergulagenic acid (5) and epiacetylaleurytolic acid (6)], two lignanes (7) and (8) [8, reported for the first time in Phytolaccaceae], a mixture of steroidal glycosides (9) and (9a), two…

Phytol and Heptacosane Are Possible Tools to Overcome Multidrug Resistance in an In Vitro Model of Acute Myeloid Leukemia
2022
Drug resistance is the ability of cancer cells to gain resistance to both conventional and novel chemotherapy agents, and remains a major problem in cancer therapy. Resistance mechanisms are multifactorial and involve more strictly pharmacological factors, such as P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and biological factors such as inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) and the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway. Possible therapeutic strategies for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have increased in recent years; however, drug resistance remains a problem for most pa-tients. Phytol and heptacosane are the major compounds of Euphorbia intisy essential oil (EO) which were demonstrated to inhi…
