On the use of the electromechanical impedance technique for the assessment of dental implant stability: Modeling and experimentation
2014
We propose the electromechanical impedance technique to monitor the stability of dental implants. The technique consists of bonding one wafer-type piezoelectric transducers to the implant system. When subjected to an electric field, the transducer induces structural excitations which, in turn, affect the transducer’s electrical admittance. The hypothesis is that the health of the bone surrounding the implant affects the sensor’s admittance. A three-dimensional finite element model of a transducer bonded to the abutment of a dental implant placed in a host bone site was created to simulate the progress of the tissue healing that occurs after surgery. The healing was modeled by changing the …
Evidence of noncentrosymmetry of human tooth hydroxyapatite crystals
2014
Herein, we investigate human single hydroxyapatite crystals (enamel and dentine) by convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED) and automated electron-diffraction tomography (ADT). The CBED pattern shows the absence of the mirror plane perpendicular to the c axis leading to the P63 space group instead of the P63 /m space group considered for larger-scale crystals, this is confirmed by ADT. This experimental evidence is of prime importance for understanding the morphogenesis and the architectural organization of calcified tissues.
Comparative analysis of acoustic emission signals generated by electrical discharges measured by the hydrophone and the wideband contact transducer
2005
The paper presents a comparative analysis of the acoustic emission (AE) pulses and signals generated by PDs. For this purpose the measurements of the acoustic emission signals generated by PDs were taken in the multipoint-plane system using a hydrophone placed directly in the area of discharge generation, and the AE pulses using a piezoelectric contact transducer which was on a side wall of a power transformer tub. Next, time runs and amplitude density spectra were drawn. Also the descriptors describing signals in the frequency domain were determined and the time-frequency analysis was carried out, which determined spectrograms for the energy density spectrum.
Zinc-blende AlN and GaN under pressure: structural, electronic, elastic and piezoelectric properties
2004
In this paper we report a theoretical study of the structural, elastic, electronic and piezoelectric properties of zinc-blende AlN and GaN under the pressure effect. The study is focused on the first-principles all electron full-potential augmented plane wave plus local orbitals calculations within the density-functional theory. The results of bulk properties, including lattice constants, bulk modulus and derivatives and band structures are obtained and compared using both the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation functional. We find that the GGA does not give a significant improvement over LDA. We also report calcula…
Boundary elements analysis of adhesively bonded piezoelectric active repair
2009
Abstract This paper presents the analysis of active piezoelectric patches for cracked structures by the boundary element method. A two-dimensional boundary integral formulation based on the multidomain technique is used to model cracks and to assemble the multi-layered piezoelectric patches to the host damaged structures. The fracture mechanics behavior of the repaired structures is analyzed for both perfect and imperfect interface between patches and host beams. The imperfect interface, representing the adhesive between two different layers, is modeled by using a “spring model” that involves linear relationships between the interface tractions, in normal and tangential directions, and the …

The Behaviour of Mistuned Piezoelectric Shunt Systems and Its Estimation
2016
This paper addresses monoharmonic vibration attenuation using piezoelectric transducers shunted with electric impedances consisting of a resistance and an inductance in series. This type of vibration attenuation has several advantages but suffers from problems related to possible mistuning. In fact, when either the mechanical system to be controlled or the shunt electric impedance undergoes a change in their dynamical features, the attenuation performance decreases significantly. This paper describes the influence of biases in the electric impedance parameters on the attenuation provided by the shunt and proposes an approximated model for a rapid prediction of the vibration damping performa…
Influence of strain in the reduction of the internal electric field in GaN/AlN quantum dots grown ona-plane 6H-SiC
2006
The strain state of stacks of GaN/AIN quantum dots (QDs) grown on (0001) and (1120) 6H-SiC has been investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy. Depending on the orientation of the wurtzite axis with respect to the growth direction it is found that the piezoelectric contribution to the electrostatic potential may either reinforce that arising from the spontaneous polarization or oppose it. The experimental results are compared with a theoretical model for the strain and polarization field in QDs of both orientations that allows the calculation of the electrostatic potential in the QDs. Both the experimental results and the theoretical model indicate that the internal electric field and elec…
A fast BEM for the analysis of damaged structures with bonded piezoelectric sensors
2010
A fast boundary element method for the analysis of three-dimensional solids with cracks and adhesively bonded piezoelectric patches, used as strain sensors, is presented. The piezoelectric sensors, as well as the adhesive layer, are modeled using a 3D state-space finite element approach. The piezoelectric patch model is formulated taking into account the full electro-mechanical coupling and embodying the suitable boundary conditions and it is eventually expressed in terms of the interface variables, to allow a straightforward coupling with the underlying host structure, which is modeled through a 3D dual boundary element method, for accurate analysis of cracks. The technique is computationa…
Reconfigurable waveguides defined by selective fluid filling in two-dimensional phononic metaplates
2022
Abstract We investigate two-dimensional phononic metaplates consisting of a periodic array of cups on a thin epoxy plate that is perforated with periodic cross holes. The cups are individually filled with water or remain empty, in view of creating reconfigurable phononic waveguides. Phononic band gaps exist for empty or filled epoxy cups, leading to waveguides defined with either positive or negative contrast. Straight and 90° bent waveguides are considered experimentally. Lamb waves are excited by a piezoelectric patch glued onto the metaplate and are imaged using a scanning laser vibrometer. Experimental results are compared to a three-dimensional finite element model of fluid–structure i…
