SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SB-SUBSTITUTED (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 PIEZOELECTRIC CERAMICS
2008
ABSTRACT Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics (K0.5Na0.5)(Nb1-xSbx)O3+0.5 mol.%MnO2, where x = 0 ÷ 0.10, with single phase structure and rhombohedral symmetry at room temperature were prepared by conventional ceramic technology. The optimal sintering temperatures of compositions were within 1100°–1140°C. MnO2 functions as a sintering aid and effectively improves the densification. The samples reached density from 4.26 g/cm3 for undoped (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 to 4.40 g/cm3 for Mn/Sb5+ co-doped ceramics. The co-effects of MnO2 doping and Sb5+ substitution lead to significant improvement in dielectric and piezoelectric properties: e at the Tc increased from 6000 (KNN) to 12400 (x = 0.04), d33 = 92 ÷ 192 …
SINTERING OF LEAD-FREE (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 BASED SOLID SOLUTION
2009
ABSTRACT In this study lead-free solid solution (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 was prepared, structure, dielectric parameters of ceramics were investigated. The doping of sintering aids did not affect the crystallographic structure of the ceramics significantly; all ceramic samples had a single-phase perovskite structure. Added elements CdO, ZnO, MnO2, V2O5 effectively decreased the sintering temperature of KNN by 50°–80°C. All sintering aids influenced sinterability, microstructure and dielectric properties of ceramics. Dielectric constant for doped samples increased from 6000 up to 8000; Pr = 15 μC/cm2, Ec = 9 kV/cm, d33 = 110 pC/N, kp = 0.38 and Qm = 190 for MnO2 doped samples.
Active shape correction of a thin glass/plastic x-ray mirror
2015
Optics for future X-ray telescopes will be characterized by very large aperture and focal length, and will be made of lightweight materials like glass or plastic in order to keep the total mass within acceptable limits. Optics based on thin slumped glass foils are currently in use in the NuSTAR telescope and are being developed at various institutes like INAF/OAB, aiming at improving the angular resolution to a few arcsec HEW. Another possibility would be the use of thin plastic foils, being developed at SAO and the Palermo University. Even if relevant progresses in the achieved angular resolution were recently made, a viable possibility to further improve the mirror figure would be the app…
Dipoles in 4,12,4-graphyne
2021
Abstract In present work, B-N pairs as dipole source were introduced into 4,12,4-graphyne. According to the density functional theory (DFT) simulations, the electronic configurations of the doped 4,12,4-graphyne systems were significantly modified owing to the built-in electric fields caused by the B-N dipoles. Different B-N concentrations and arrangements can alter the electronic structure of 4,12,4-graphyne. Consequently, an obvious in-plane piezoelectricity can also be induced. Moreover, the direct band gap can be delicately modulated from 150 meV to 660 meV at PBE level. The B-N dipoles can also greatly enhance the light absorption instead of shifting the absorption region. According to…

A Microstructural Model for Micro-Cracking in Piezoceramics
2018
Piezoelectric ceramics are employed in several applications for their capability to couple mechanical and electrical fields, which can be advantageously exploited for the implementation of smart functionalities. The electromechanical coupling, which can be employed for fast accurate micro-positioning devices, makes such materials suitable for application in micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). However, due to their brittleness, piezoceramics can develop damage leading to initiation of micro-cracks, affecting the performance of the material in general and the micro-devices in particular. For such reasons, the development of accurate and robust numerical tools is an important asset for th…
A Magnetostrictive Electric Power Generator for energy harvesting from traffic: Design and experimental verification
2015
In the last decades, the growth in energy demand, the decrease of fossil fuels available in the market and the impact of anthropogenic factors on climate change has given new impulse to research on renewable energy systems, particularly those known as energy harvesting devices (EHDs) [1]. A large number of EHDs have been proposed, using different operating principle [1-4]. Among them, piezoelectric and magnetostrictive seem to be particularly suitable for the application in EHD. In these materials the application of external mechanical stress induces a change in the level of magnetization and therefore an electromotive force (emf) can be generated and collected in order to produce electrica…
ELECTRICAL-FIELD CONTROL OF MAGNETISM MEDIATED BY STRAIN IN Ni NANOSTRUCTURES FABRICATED ON PRE-POLED PMN–PT (011)
2013
We investigate the effects of piezoelectric-generated strain on the magnetization configuration of Ni nanostructures fabricated on pre-poled piezoelectric (011) [ Pb ( Mg 0.33 Nb 0.66) O 3]0.68–[ PbTiO 3]0.32 (PMN–PT) by high resolution X-ray microscopy. We observe a strong uniaxial anisotropy in the Ni nanostructures, due to the relaxation of the substrate following the deposition of the Ni . The anisotropy can be modified by the application of an electric field to the piezoelectric substrate (thus generating a piezoelectric strain in the system) through the magneto-elastic effect. By applying an electric field to the PMN–PT, the magnetization configuration in nanostructured Ni squares an…
Large deflection of magneto-electro-elastic laminated plates
2014
Abstract A model for the large deflection analysis of magneto-electro-elastic laminated plates is derived. The first order shear deformation theory and the von Karman stress function approach are employed. A set of resolving partial differential equations involving kinematical variables and the stress function is obtained as a consequence of the preliminary condensation of the electro-magnetic state to the plate kinematics. A closed form solution for simply-supported plates is presented. Numerical results are carried out for plates consisting of piezoelectric BaTiO 3 and piezomagnetic CoFe 2 O 4 layers. These results show the influence of large deflections on the plate response and could be…
Polarized recombination of acoustically transported carriers in GaAs nanowires
2012
: The oscillating piezoelectric field of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) is employed to transport photoexcited electrons and holes in GaAs nanowires deposited on a SAW delay line on a LiNbO3 crystal. The carriers generated in the nanowire by a focused light spot are acoustically transferred to a second location where they recombine. We show that the recombination of the transported carriers occurs in a zinc blende section on top of the predominant wurtzite nanowire. This allows contactless control of the linear polarized emission by SAWs which is governed by the crystal structure. Additional polarization-resolved photoluminescence measurements were performed to investigate spin conservation d…
