Low back pain and other overuse injuries in a group of Japanese triathletes.

1996

OBJECTIVE: To document the incidence of low back pain and other overuse injuries in a group of triathletes, and to investigate any associations with various physical and triathlon related factors. METHODS: By means of a questionnaire, the physical characteristics, training habits, and the incidences of overuse injuries of 92 Japanese triathletes (70 males, 22 females) were documented. Student's t and chi 2 tests were used to determine the significance of any associations with injury incidence, as well as differences between subjects experiencing or not experiencing low back pain in the previous year. RESULTS: Low back pain was experienced by 32% of subjects in the previous year. The majorit…

Comparison of Lateral Abdominal Musculature Activation during Expiration with an Expiratory Flow Control Device Versus the Abdominal Drawing-in Maneu…

2020

Background and Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to quantify and compare lateral abdominal musculature thickness, including the transverse abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) muscles, via rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI) during the use of the expiratory flow control device (EFCD) versus the classic abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM). Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational pilot study. Twenty-one women were recruited and assessed the thickness of each muscle (TrA, IO, and EO) by ultrasound imaging at rest, during the ADIM, and during expiration with the EFCD. Waist circumference was also measured under the same circumstan…

p53 and Ki-67 expression in renal cell carcinomas of pregnant women and their correlation with prognosis: a pilot study.

2007

In the present study, we reported two cases of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) diagnosed in pregnant women (Pt) that were submitted to radical nephrectomy, in both cases within the fourth month. The patients, after 13 and 3 years, respectively, did not show evidence of recurrent disease. We performed an immunohistochemical study on RCC specimens in comparison to seven age-matched controls (Cl). The panel of antibodies included Ki-67, p53, bcl-2, ER, PgR, PCNA, and IGF-1. We describe a difference in the expression of p53 and Ki-67. Specifically, p53 was highly expressed in RCC of both Pt but scarcely present or absent in Cl; by contrast, Ki-67 was hardly expressed or negative in RCC of both Pt, b…

A pilot study of laparoscopic adhesion prophylaxis after myomectomy with a copolymer designed for endoscopic application.

2009

Abstract Study Objective To assess the laparoscopic handling and safety of D,L-polylactide-e-caprolactone-trimethylene carbonate (PCT) copolymer after myomectomy and compare it with icodextrin. In contrast to previously developed solid barriers, the material has rationally designed properties that are advantageous for convenient laparoscopic application. Design A randomized, single-blinded clinical study (Canadian Task Force Classification I). Setting Single-center study in a German University Hospital. Patients Thirty patients who underwent laparoscopic myomectomy were enrolled. Interventions After laparoscopic myomectomy and subsequent reconstruction of the uterus with interrupted sutures…

Role of one-step nucleic acid amplification (OSNA) to detect sentinel lymph node low-volume metastasis in early-stage cervical cancer.

2019

IntroductionGrowing evidence in the literature supports the accuracy of sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy in early-stage cervical cancer. One-step nucleic acid amplification (OSNA) is a rapid assay able to detect cytokeratin 19-mRNA in SLNs, and it can be used for intra-operative detection of low-volume metastases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the rate of low-volume metastasis in SLNs detected by OSNA in patients with early-stage cervical cancer. Secondary aims were to define the sensitivity and the negative predictive value of SLN biopsy assessed with OSNA.MethodsAfter IRB approval, consecutive patients who underwent surgery for International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics…

Chromatic and achromatic visual fields in relation to choroidal thickness in patients with high myopia: A pilot study

2018

Purpose. - To analyse the relationship between the choroidal thickness and the visual perception of patients with high myopia but without retinal damage. Methods. - All patients underwent ophthalmic evaluation including a slit lamp examination and dilated ophthalmoscopy, subjective refraction, best corrected visual acuity, axial length, optical coherence tomography, contrast sensitivity function and sensitivity of the visual pathways. Results. - We included eleven eyes of subjects with high myopia. There are statistical correlations between choroidal thickness and almost all the contrast sensitivity values. The sensitivity of magnocellular and koniocellular pathways is the most affected, an…

Cizolirtine Citrate, an Effective Treatment for Symptomatic Patients with Urinary Incontinence Secondary to Overactive Bladder: A Pilot Dose-Finding …

2009

Abstract Background A dose-finding study was performed as the first step in the clinical development of the new drug, cizolirtine citrate. Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of cizolirtine citrate in overactive bladder with urinary incontinence. Design, setting, and participants Seventy-nine outpatients with clinical overactive bladder and/or urodynamic diagnosis of detrusor overactivity were randomized in a multicentre, 12-wk, double-blind, pilot trial. Interventions Patients received cizolirtine citrate 400mg bid (C400), cizolirtine citrate 200mg bid (C200), or placebo. Measurements Patients recorded efficacy variables in 7- and 14-d bladder diaries: urinary incontinence episodes…

Semaglutide reduces fat accumulation in the tongue: A randomized single-blind, pilot study

2021

Abstract Aim We evaluated the effect of the latest GLP-1 RA semaglutide on tongue fat storage in obese women. Design. We conducted a randomized single-blind, pilot study. Methods Twenty-five obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (33.7 ± 5.3 years, body mass index (BMI) 36.1 ± 3.9 kg/m2, mean ± SD) were randomized to semaglutide 1.0 mg or placebo for 16 weeks. We quantified tongue volume and its fat tissue and fat proportion by magnetic resonance imaging. Results Tongue fat tissue and fat proportion significantly reduced after semaglutide vs placebo (-1.94 ± 5.51 vs. + 3.12 ± 4.87 cm3, p = 0.022, and −0.02 ± 0.07 vs. 0.04 ± 0.06, p = 0.010, respectively). Group Therapy Module to Enhance Self-Esteem in Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder: A Pilot Study

2010

Psychotherapeutic treatments of borderline personality disorder (BPD) often focus on severe behavioral problems. Until now, few techniques have been developed to specifically address low self-esteem in BPD. We developed a 6-session psychoeducative group therapy module to treat low self-esteem in BPD patients. After developing and piloting the therapy module, a controlled outpatient pilot study was performed. Nineteen female BPD patients participated in the group module after discharge from an inpatient DBT program. Twenty-four female BPD patients served as controls. Outcome was assessed by different self-esteem measures. Results showed a greater improvement in self-esteem in the interventio…

The value of neutrophil and lymphocyte count in frail older women.

2013

Increasing evidence suggests that systemic inflammation is associated with many pathophysiological processes including frailty in older adults. We evaluated the relationships between white blood cell subtypes, geriatric assessment, and frailty syndrome and in particular, how they correlate with individual frailty criteria (involuntary loss of weight, low energy or exhaustion, slow mobility, muscle weakness, and low physical activity) in frail older women. There was a significant and positive correlation between the frailty score and neutrophil count, but a significantly negative correlation was found when this score was compared to the lymphocyte count. These associations were significant o…
