Functional hypoxia drives neuroplasticity and neurogenesis via brain erythropoietin.

Erythropoietin (EPO), named after its role in hematopoiesis, is also expressed in mammalian brain. In clinical settings, recombinant EPO treatment has revealed a remarkable improvement of cognition, but underlying mechanisms have remained obscure. Here, we show with a novel line of reporter mice that cognitive challenge induces local/endogenous hypoxia in hippocampal pyramidal neurons, hence enhancing expression of EPO and EPO receptor (EPOR). High-dose EPO administration, amplifying auto/paracrine EPO/EPOR signaling, prompts the emergence of new CA1 neurons and enhanced dendritic spine densities. Sweet taste of prosocial status signaling: When eating organic foods makes you happy and hopeful.

As the current research suggests that there are links between prosocial acts and status signaling (including sustainable consumer choices), we empirically study (with three experiments) whether food consumers go green to be seen. First, we examine how activating a motive for status influences prosocial organic food preferences. Then, we examine how the social visibility of the choice (private vs. public) affects these preferences. We found that when consumers' desire for status was elicited, they preferred organic food products significantly over their nonorganic counterparts; making the choice situation visible created the same effect. In patients with segmentation defects of the vertebra (SDV), a burden of this microdeletion was observed with TBX6 as a candidate gene for SDV. In a published cohort of patients with congenital scoliosis (CS), TBX6 haploinsufficiency was compound heterozygous with a common haplotype. Besides, a single three-generation family with spondylocostal dysostosis (SCD) was reported with a heterozygous stop-loss of TBX6. Effects of nifedipine on renal and cardiovascular responses to neuropeptide y in anesthetized rats

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) acts via multiple receptor subtypes termed Y1, Y2 and Y5. While Y1 receptor-mediated effects, e.g., in the vasculature, are often sensitive to inhibitors of L-type Ca2+ channels such as nifedipine, little is known about the role of such channels in Y5-mediated effects such as diuresis and natriuresis. Therefore, we explored whether nifedipine affects NPY-induced diuresis and natriuresis. After pre-treatment with nifedipine or vehicle, anesthetized rats received infusions or bolus injections of NPY. Morphologic variations in the pineal gland of the albino rat after a chronic alcoholisation process.

We studied the effect of alcohol on the pineal gland of 48 male Wistar rats. Animals were divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental group underwent a previous progressive alcoholisation period with ethanol diluted in water at a concentration of 40%. Animals were sacrificed at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, and the ultrastructure, karyometric indices, and number of synaptic bodies in the pineal gland were analysed. The results showed progressive morphologic alterations in the ethanol-treated animals, which culminated in fatty degeneration of the pineal parenchyma after 6 months.
