Innovations in the Art of Microneurosurgery for Reaching Deep-Seated Cerebral Lesions.
2019
Deep-seated cerebral lesions have fascinated and frustrated countless surgical innovators since the dawn of the microneurosurgical era. To determine the optimal approach, the microneurosurgeon must take into account the characteristics and location of the pathological lesion as well as the operator's range of technical expertise. Increasingly, microneurosurgeons must select between multiple operative corridors that can provide access to the surgical target. Innovative trajectories have emerged for many indications that provide more flexible operative angles and superior exposure but result in longer working distances and more technically demanding maneuvers. In this article, we highlight 4 …

Synthesis of isoindolo[1,4]benzoxazinone and isoindolo[1,5]benzoxazepine: two new ring systems of pharmaceutical interest
2015
Abstract Two new ring systems, isoindolo[1,4]benzoxazinone and isoindolo[1,5]benzoxazepine, were conveniently synthesized through cyclization of suitably substituted isoindole derivatives. Some of the new compounds exhibited antiproliferative activity against a wide range of human tumor cell lines with GI 50 mean values at low micromolar level (3.72–5.13 μM).

Chemical composition of the essential oil from the aerial parts of Ononis reclinata L. (Fabaceae) grown wild in Sicily
2016
In the present study, the chemical composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Ononis reclinata L., a species not previously investigated, collected in Sicily was evaluated by GC and Gas chromatography-Mass spectrometry. The main components of O. reclinata were menthone (43.6%), isopimpinellin (38.4%) and pulegone (11.2%). The comparison with other studied oils of genus Ononis showed a peculiar and characteristic profile.
Evaluation of furanocoumarins from seeds of the wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa L. s.l.).
2018
Abstract Although the wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa L. s.l.) fruits are known to contain linear and angular furanocoumarins, the individual components of the seeds have not been fully identified and quantitated, and, in the case of immature seeds, reported. In view of this, the main furanocoumarin compounds were extracted using pyridine, and were isolated using semi-preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. The structural elucidation of isolated compounds was done based on detailed spectral analysis conducted by liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization–mass spectrometry (LC–ESI/MS), 1H and 13C NMR and, where possible, by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The quan…
Binding Sites for Ca2+‐Channel Effectors and Ryanodine inPeriplaneta americana—Possible Targets for New Insecticides
1996
The calcium channel and the 'calcium release channel' of muscle membrane of the cockroach Periplaneta americana have been characterized. Biological assays with calcium channel blockers and ryanodine on different insects and acari revealed pronounced insecticidal effects with ryanodine, but not with calcium channel blockers, at concentrations between 0.1 and 300 μg ml -1 . Skeletal muscle membranes derived either from the tubular network or from the sarcoplasmatic reticulum of P. americana were characterized with respect to the binding of the dihydropyridine (DHP) [ 3 H]isradipine (PN 200-110), the phenylalkylamine [ 3 H]verapamil and the alkaloid [ 3 H]ryanodine. Preliminary binding studies…

Ordering kinetics in synthetic Mg(Al,Fe3+)2O4 spinels: Quantitative elucidation of the whole Al-Mg-Fe partitioning, rate constants, activation energi…
2014
A novel procedure, based on the application of the kinetics simulator Gepasi, has been successfully applied for modeling the cation ordering process in two synthetic Mg(Al2-yFe3+y)O4 spinels (y~ 0.39 and 0.54, samples F39 and F54, respectively). The kinetic profiles suggested a two-stage mechanism, with rapid inter-site exchange of Fe3+ with Mg followed by slow exchange of Al with Mg. The trial to apply the classical approaches, based on the explicit solutions of the differential equations corresponding to single-cation (Sha-Chappel model) or two-cation (Müller model) exchange reactions, proved not feasible in the whole time range, thus implying a lack of information about the exchange proc…
