Skillful management of exodontia complication to prevent dreadful sequelae
2011
Successful surgical treatments depend upon accurate diagnosis, judicious treatment planning, selection and execution of an appropriate surgical technique, and on a well monitored post-operative period. However, despite these precautions, extraction of teeth (particularly third molar) is exposed to the accidents and complications common to all buccomaxillary and facial interventions. A maxillary third molar may be displaced in maxillary sinus, nearby soft tissue, or may migrate in a superioposterior direction towards paraphyrangeal space, or infratemporal fossa. Dislocating the maxillary third molar in infratemporal fossa is one of the worst nightmare as this area has complex anatomy consist…
Principal part of multi-parameter displacement functions
2012
This paper deals with a perturbation problem from a period annulus, for an analytic Hamiltonian system [J.-P. Françoise, Ergodic Theory Dynam. Systems 16 (1996), no. 1, 87–96 ; L. Gavrilov, Ann. Fac. Sci. Toulouse Math. (6) 14(2005), no. 4, 663–682. The authors consider the planar polynomial multi-parameter deformations and determine the coefficients in the expansion of the displacement function generated on a transversal section to the period annulus. Their first result gives a generalization to the Françoise algorithm for a one-parameter family, following [J.-P. Françoise and M. Pelletier, J. Dyn. Control Syst. 12 (2006), no. 3, 357–369. The second result expresses the principal terms in …
NMR Studies of Single-File Diffusion in Unidimensional Channel Zeolites
1996
Single-file diffusion is the restricted propagation of particles that cannot pass each other. The occurrence of this phenomenon should be reflected by a change in the time dependence of the mean particle displacement in comparison with ordinary diffusion. Although this process is considered to be the rate-controlling mechanism in a large variety of processes, so far no direct evidence of this phenomenon has been provided. Diffusion measurements made with pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in unidimensional pore systems (zeolites AlPO4-5 and Theta-1) reflect the expected time dependence of single-file diffusion.

ADDISC lumbar disc prosthesis: Analytical and FEA testing of novel implants
2023
The intact intervertebral disc is a six-freedom degree elastic deformation structure with shock absorption. 'Ball-and-socket' TDR do not reproduce these properties inducing zygapophyseal joint overload. Elastomeric TDRs reproduce better normal disc kinematics, but repeated core deformation causes its degeneration. We aimed to create a new TDR (ADDISC) reproducing healthy disc features. We designed TDR, analyzed (Finite Element Analysis), and measured every 500,000 cycles for 10 million cycles of the flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation cyclic compression bench-testing. In the inlay case, we weighted it and measured its deformation. ADDISC has two semi-spherical articular s…
Multidomain Symmetric Galerkin BEM for non-linear analysis of masonries in-plane loaded
2014
The preservation of the historical and monumental buildings, but also of the considerable heritage of old constructions made by traditional techniques, is one of the actual problems of the structural mechanics. The level of knowledge of their structural behavior in presence of external actions is made through calculus methods and simple procedures in order to allow a reading of the material suffering degree and as a consequence of the related safety. In this paper an elastic analysis of walls, also in presence of geometrical nonlinearity consisting in the contact/detachment phenomenon among stone blocks. The wall having any shape and zone-wise variable physical characteristics is loaded in …
Product Placement in Video Games
2016
Organizations look for new ways of communication as traditional media is being saturated with advertising messages. One of the alternatives is product placement in video games. This chapter analyses this new communication alternative. Moreover, through an investigation the chapter shows the consequences of placing a brand in this form of electronic entertainment – in the sense of image transfer from the video game to the brand. Specifically, this chapter focuses on the emotions evoked by the video game. Therefore, the present study develops a scale of emotions adapted to the theme of this research. Additionally, this study analyses the differences between types of product placement and thei…
Frequency of Fabry disease in patients with small-fibre neuropathy of unknown aetiology: a pilot study
2010
Background: Early occurrence of small-fibre neuropathy (SFN) is a common feature of Fabry disease (FD) – an X-linked storage disorder caused by reduced activity of the α-galactosidase A (α-GAL). Although SFN may result from different disorders, the cause is often unclear. Therefore, we investigated the frequency of FD in patients with SFN of unknown aetiology. Methods: Patients with idiopathic SFN, established by sensory quantitative testing and/or skin biopsy, were examined for mutations in the α-GAL gene. Where mutations in the α-GAL gene were identified, levels of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) were measured in urine and blood and the α-GAL activity was evaluated. When new mutations were …

AGE8. Is the Serum N Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide the Best Candidate Biomarker for Long-term Prognosis in Patients with Prosthesis-patient Mismatch after Mitral Valve Replacement? C. R. Balistreri1, C. Pisano1, R. Franchino1, S.R. Vacirca1, F. Crapanzano1, O. F. Triolo1, C. Palmeri1, G. Ruvolo1 1University Of Palermo, Palermo, Italy Background: Natriuretic peptides (NPs) are released from the heart in response to pressure and volume overload. Among these, B-NP and Nterminal- proBNP (NT-proBNP) have become important diagnostic tools for the management of heart failure. However, B-NP and NT-proBNP levels reflect complications of systolic and diastolic function as well as alteration …
Short stem total hip arthroplasty: Potential explanations for persistent post-surgical thigh pain.
2017
Abstract: Short stem uncemented femoral implants were developed with the aim of preserving proximal bone stock for future revisions, improving biomechanical reconstruction, aiding insertion through smaller incisions and potentially decreasing or limiting the incidence of thigh pain. Despite all the advantages of short stem designs, it remains unclear whether they are able to limit post-surgical thigh pain. In patients with short stem hip arthroplasty and persistent thigh pain, it is of the utmost importance to understand the potential etiologies of this chronic pain for selecting the appropriate treatment strategy. Therefore, this manuscript explores the hypothetical etiologies of persisten…
