Trophic interactions have been a popular research subject among ecologists for decades because understanding the structure of food webs is essential in understanding consumer-resource interactions and complex ecosystems. Consumer diet estimation with biological tracer-based mixing models is an important and recently rapidly developing tool for deciphering aquatic food webs. Bayesian frameworks have been introduced to estimate diets accurately with stable isotope proportions. Resilience is the measure of disturbance an ecological system can absorb before changing states. Data on some relevant environmental variables and phytoplankton species composition, collected from the hypertrophic shallow lake Albufera of Valencia (Spain) during 1980-88, were examined using Redundancy Analysis (RDA). The hydrological cycle of the lake is manipulated for rice cultivation in the area. Seasonality and the particular hydrological cycle of the lake were the principal factors influencing long-term phytoplankton dynamics. Two mesocosm experiments were carried out to investigate the dynamic effects of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and planktivorous fish additions on phytoplankton strategies and diversity. The phylogenetic and functional approaches were used to understand phytoplankton ecology in shallow Mediterranean lakes. The experimental approach is new for the study of algal functional groups. Nutrient loading and fish stocks enhanced biomass of small algae but decreased phytoplankton diversity and species richness. Abstract We present a new stochastic model, based on a 0-dimensional version of the well known biogeochemical flux model (BFM), which allows to take into account the temperature random fluctuations present in natural systems and therefore to describe more realistically the dynamics of real marine ecosystems. Abstract A 3D advection-diffusion-reaction model is proposed to investigate the abundance of phytoplankton in a difficult-to-access ecosystem such as the Gulf of Sirte (southern Mediterranean Sea) characterized by oligotrophic waters. In a pond receiving warmed cooling waters from a thermal power plant, the physical and chemical properties of the water, phytoplankton, periphyton and zooplankton were monitored on a weekly sampling schedule. In winter the phytoplankton growth was limited by poor light conditions. In mid-February a rapid phytoplankton growth started, simultaneously with increasing light energy, high nutrient concentrations and small herbivorous zooplankton populations.
