Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) for the treatment of aortic diseases: a position statement from the European Association for Cardio-Thora…

2012

Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is an emerging treatment modality, which has been rapidly embraced by clinicians treating thoracic aortic disease.1–4 Fundamentally, it is a far less invasive approach than open surgery and its availability and relative ease of application has changed and extended management options in thoracic aortic disease, including in those patients deemed unfit or unsuitable for open surgery. In the operating room, this requires considerable perceptual, cognitive and psychomotor demands on the operators. The dramatic expansion of TEVAR activity has necessarily prompted a requirement to systematically consider the indications, appropriateness, limitations and…

A multicenter study on the appropriateness of hospitalization in obstetric wards: application of Obstetric Appropriateness Evaluation Protocol (Obste…

2015

The cross-sectional study has been based on the implementation of the Obstetric Appropriateness Evaluation Protocol (OAEP) in seven hospitals to determine inappropriate hospital admissions and days of stay. The outcomes were: inappropriateness of admission and "percentage of inappropriateness" for one hospitalization. A total number of 2196 clinical records were reviewed. The mean percentage of inappropriateness for hospitalization was 22%. The percentage of inappropriateness for the first 10 d of hospitalization peaked in correspondence of the fourth (42%). The logistic regression model on inappropriated admission reported that emergency admission was a protective factor (OR = 0.4) and to …

Real-time clothoid approximation by Rational Bezier curves

2008

This paper presents a novel technique for implementing Clothoidal real-time paths for mobile robots. As first step, rational Bezier curves are obtained as approximation of the Fresnel integrals. By rescaling, rotating and translating the previously computed RBC, an on-line Clothoidal path is obtained. In this process, coefficients, weights and control points are kept invariant. This on-line approach guarantees that an RBC has the same behavior as the original Clothoid using a low curve order. The resulting Clothoidal path allows any two arbitrary poses to be joined in a plane. RBCs working as Clothoids are also used to search for the shortest bounded-curvature path with a significant comput…

[How to design workshops to promote health in community groups].

2013

Critical review: Grand challenges in assessing the adverse effects of contaminants of emerging concern on aquatic food webs

2019

Much progress has been made in the past few decades in understanding the sources, transport, fate, and biological effects of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in aquatic ecosystems. Despite these advancements, significant obstacles still prevent comprehensive assessments of the environmental risks associated with the presence of CECs. Many of these obstacles center around the extrapolation of effects of single chemicals observed in the laboratory or effects found in individual organisms or species in the field to impacts of multiple stressors on aquatic food webs. In the present review, we identify 5 challenges that must be addressed to promote studies of CECs from singular exposure e…

Influence of Physical Treatments on the Potato Starch Granules Micro- and Ultrastructure

2012

In this research, potato starch was subjected to ph ysical treatments in order to analyse the changes at the micro- and ultrastructural levels an d finally to identify the optimal conditions for disintegrating the starch granules. For the analysi s, 10% aqueous solutions of potato starch were treated with a) microwaves; b) heat and c) heat com bined with ultrasounds. For each treatment type, the duration was 5 minutes, excepting the microwave treatment, where the time was 1 and 5 minutes; heat power varied from 180W to 900W at the tests with microwave, temperature varied between 65 o C and 100 o C in the thermal experiments and at the thermal ana lysis combined with ultrasounds temperature …

Archaeogenetics and Landscape Dynamics in Sicily during the Holocene: A Review

2021

The Mediterranean islands and their population history are of considerable importance to the interpretation of the population history of Europe as a whole. In this context, Sicily, because of its geographic position, represents a bridge between Africa, the Near East, and Europe that led to the stratification of settlements and admixture events. The genetic analysis of extant and ancient human samples has tried to reconstruct the population dynamics associated with the cultural and demographic changes that took place during the prehistory and history of Sicily. In turn, genetic, demographic and cultural changes need to be understood in the context of the environmental changes that took place…

Planning Punic cities: Geophysical prospection and the built environment at Motya, Sicily

2020

The urban plan of ancient Motya on the Isola di San Pantaleo on the west coast of Sicily and its relationship to developments in Phoenician and Punic societies have been investigated since the early 1960s. Data from geophysical surveys in the north-eastern quadrant of Motya show the regular organisation of urban insulae framed by two broad roads. These results, combined with data from previous nearby excavations, improve the modelling of Motya's layout, and contribute to the wider discussion of Phoenician/Punic and broader Mediterranean urban traditions between the sixth and fourth centuries BC.
