Acacia cyclops A. Cunn. ex G. Don (Leguminosae) in Italy: first cases of naturalization

2012

The first two cases of naturalization of Acacia cyclops are reported for Italy. Young trees were observed growing in the wild some 15 years ago on Linosa (Pelagie Islands, Strait of Sicily). A decade later, this alien plant should no longer be considered as a casual, since a very intensive process of self-sown regeneration has been observed in some plantations on Lampedusa, the major island of the same Archipelago. The available literature suggests the need for careful monitoring of the ongoing invasion process, as A. cyclops has already shown a very invasive behaviour elsewhere within Mediterranean-type biomes due to its ability to withstand high environmental stresses. As migrating birds …

Triterpene saponins from the roots ofAmpelozizyphus amazonicus

1992

A new triterpene saponin was isolated from the roots of Ampelozizyphus amazonicus together with the known 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-20-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyljujubogenin and the known triterpenes melaleucic acid, 3 beta,27 alpha-dihydroxylup-20(29)-en-28 beta-oic acid, betulinic acid, betulin, lupeol. The structure of this saponin was elucidated as 3-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl(1----2)alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl]- 20-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyljujubogenin by spectral analysis and chemical transformations.

Amphipod assemblage under the influence of desalination plants in the south-eastern Mediterranean

2019

A check-list of amphipod assemblage, collected in the vicinity of two Israeli desalination plant marine outfalls, is provided with some notes about the species. The dataset highlights changes in species composition throughout the years, possibly due to local anthropogenic impacts.

Metabolites from Mediterranean plants: characterization and transformation. Chemotaxonomic assessment and biological activity.

Pharmacological Properties of Shikonin – A Review of Literature since 2002

2013

The naphthoquinone shikonin is the main active principle of Zicao, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine made from the dried root of Lithospermum erythrorhizon. Studies carried out over the past 30 years have provided a scientific basis for the use of Zicao which has been long employed in folk medicine to treat a variety of inflammatory and infectious diseases. In particular, shikonin has been shown to possess many diverse properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, antimicrobial, and wound healing effects. The fact that shikonin shows so many beneficial properties has increased the interest in this molecule dramatically, especially in the past few years. The aim o…

Steroidal saponins from Smilax medica and their antifungal activity.

2005

Three new steroidal saponins (1-3) were isolated from the roots of Smilax medica, together with the known disporoside A (4). The structures of the new compounds were elucidated mainly by extensive spectroscopic analysis (1D and 2D NMR, FABMS, and HRESIMS). Compounds 1, 2, and 4 demonstrated weak antifungal activity against the human pathogenic yeasts Candida albicans, C. glabrata, and C.tropicalis, with MIC values between 12.5 and 50 microg/mL.
