Ambient Temperature, Social Perception and Social Behavior

2020

The literature suggests that human perception and behavior vary with physical temperature. We provide an experimental test of how different ambient temperature conditions impact social behavior and social perception: Subjects went through a series of tasks measuring various aspects of social behavior and perception under three temperature conditions (cold vs. optimal vs. warm). Despite well-established findings on temperature effects, our data suggest that physical temperature has no relevant influence on social behavior and social perception. We corroborate our finding of a null effect by the use of equivalence testing and provide a discussion in the light of recent failed replication atte…

Designing Medical Devices Based on Silicon Polymeric Material with Controlled Release of Local Anesthetics

2012

The drug delivery systems that are the object of this article take the form of a polymer matrix made of silicone containing a drug. These devices can be used as patches for local dermal applications releasing the drug in a controlled manner. The model active agent, lidocaine hydrochloride was chosen from the range of local anesthetics. When the drug is restricted to the surface, it is released more rapidly than when it is allowed to spread evenly throughout the silicon structure. When hydrophilic polymers such as PVA and HEC are mixed in with the lidocaine hydrochloride and deposited on the surface of the polymer matrix, we observed that the burst effect was eliminated without modifying the…

Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation for Acquired Aplastic Anemia: Better Outcome with Bone Marrow as Compared to Peripheral Blood in HLA-Matched Sib…

2009

Abstract Abstract 876 Background: Transplantation of bone marrow (BM) from a HLA-matched sibling donor is an effective treatment for severe aplastic anemia (AA) with long-term survival in excess of 80%. In the recent years there were two trends in allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) for AA: (1) increasing proportion of transplants performed from matched unrelated donors (MUD) and (2) increasing proportion of transplants using peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBSC) as stem cell source instead of BM. A similar switch to PBSC over BM grafts is reported in leukemia transplants. PBSC grafts for leukemia are associated with higher rates of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). This …

Synthesis of hyperbranched poly(tert-butyl acrylate) by self-condensing atom transfer radical polymerization of a macroinimer

2000

Using 2-hydroxyethyl α-bromoisobuty-rate as initiator, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of tert-butyl acrylate leads to poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PtBA) with a hydroxyl group at one and a bromine atom at the other end. Esterification of the hydroxyl group of these heterotelechelic polymers with acryloyl chloride yields PtBA (M n = 3060) with a polymerizable double bond at one end and a bromine atom at the other end which can act as an initiator in ATRP (macroinimer). Self-condensing ATRP of such a macroinimer leads to hyperbranched or highly branched PtBA. The polymer was characterized by GPC viscosity measurements. Even at M w = 78800, a rather low polydispersity index of M w M …

Mechanism of anionic polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of aluminium alkyls

1995

Methyl methacrylate was polymerized with tert-butyl lithium in the presence of triethylaluminium or triisobutylaluminium at 78°C in toluene. As indicated by GPC and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, the polymerization is accompanied by side reactions. The lower oligomers were fractionated by distillation and characterised by NMR, FT-IR, UV and electron impact (EI) mass spectrometry. All these data show that part of the polymer chains are carrying exactly one tert-butyl isoprenyl ketone unit. In order to avoid the formation of tert-butyl isoprenyl ketone a molar ratio of Al/Li>2 is necessary.

Synthesis, Anti-Inflammatory Activity, and in Vitro Antitumor Effect of a Novel Class of Cyclooxygenase Inhibitors: 4-(Aryloyl)phenyl Methyl Sulfones

2010

Following our previous research on anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), we report on the design and synthesis of 4-(aryloyl)phenyl methyl sulfones. These substances were characterized for their capacity to inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) isoenzymes. Molecular modeling studies showed that the methylsulfone group of these compounds was inserted deep in the pocket of the human COX-2 binding site, in an orientation that precludes hydrogen bonding with Arg120, Ser353, and Tyr355 through their oxygen atoms. The N-arylindole 33 was the most potent inhibitor of COX-2 and also the most selective (COX-1/COX-2 IC(50) ratio was 262). The indole derivative 33 was further tested in vivo for its ant…

Interaction between Longitudinal Shear and Transverse Bending in Prestressed Concrete Box Girders

2017

In box girder bridges, the quantity and distribution of reinforcement to be put in concrete elements of sections can be evaluated only by considering the deformation of the cross section in addition to the longitudinal analysis of the static scheme, establishing the entire state of stress of box sections. This leads to a need to evaluate the interaction between internal forces obtained by the global analysis and the ones obtained by the local analysis of the cross sections. The frame effect implies the elastic deformation of slabs and webs, whereas eccentrically applied loads lead to cross-section distortion with the loss of the box shape. Hence, the reinforcement is strongly influenced by …

New copolymers graft of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-d,l-aspartamide obtained from atom transfer radical polymerization as vector for gene delivery

2012

Abstract New cationic α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)- d , l -aspartamide (PHEA) graft copolymers were synthesized by ATRP, using diethylamino ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) as monomer for polymerization, yielding polycations (PHEA-pDEAEMA) able to condense DNA. Then, consecutive ATRP conditions were set up on PHEA-pDEAEMA to obtain copolymers containing also hydrophilic chains (PHEA-IB-pDMAEMA-pPEGMA) able to improve biocompatibility of polyplexes and to provide them stealth properties. Agarose gel studies showed that the copolymers effectively condensed plasmid DNA to form polyplexes. Light scattering studies were used to analyze the size and the ζ -potential of these polyplexes, showing that cop…

Roles of p53, NF-κB and the androgen receptor in controlling NGAL expression in prostate cancer cell lines

2018

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL a.k.a lipocalin 2, lnc2) is a secreted protein which can form a complex with matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9). This MMP9/NGAL complex has been associated with metastasis. MMP9 and NGAL are detected in the urine of patients afflicted with many different types of cancer, including prostate cancer. The effects of p53, NF-κB and the androgen receptor (AR) on the expression of NGAL was examined in four prostate cancer cell lines. Prostate cancer cell lines that are AR negative and expressed either mutant or no p53 (DU145 and PC3) displayed higher levels of NGAL expression compared to the prostate cancer cell lines (LNCaP and 22Rv-1) which are AR …

Novel Approaches for Glioblastoma Treatment: Focus on Tumor Heterogeneity, Treatment Resistance, and Computational Tools

2019

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly aggressive primary brain tumor. Currently, the suggested line of action is the surgical resection followed by radiotherapy and treatment with the adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ), a DNA alkylating agent. However, the ability of tumor cells to deeply infiltrate the surrounding tissue makes complete resection quite impossible, and in consequence, the probability of tumor recurrence is high, and the prognosis is not positive. GBM is highly heterogeneous and adapts to treatment in most individuals. Nevertheless, these mechanisms of adaption are unknown. RECENT FINDINGS: In this review, we will discuss the recent discoveries in molecular and cellular heterog…
