The interdependence of structural and electrical properties in TiO2/TiO/Ti periodic multilayers

2013

International audience; Multilayered structures with 14-50 nm periods composed of titanium and two different titanium oxides, TiO and TiO2, were accurately produced by DC magnetron sputtering using the reactive gas pulsing process. The structure and composition of these periodic TiO2/TiO/Ti stacks were investigated by X-ray diffraction and transmission electronic microscopy techniques. Two crystalline phases, hexagonal close packed Ti and face centred cubic TiO, were identified in the metallic-rich sub-layers, whereas the oxygen-rich ones comprised a mixture of amorphous TiO2 and rutile phase. DC electrical resistivity rho measured for temperatures ranging from 300 to 500 K exhibited a meta…

Variable-charge method applied to study coupled grain boundary migration in the presence of oxygen

2009

International audience; One of the important differences between simulation and experiments in grain boundary (GB)-dominated metallic structures is the lack of impurities such as oxygen in computational samples. A modified variable-charge method [Elsener A, Politano O, Derlet PM, Van Swygenhoven H. Modell Simul Mater Sci Eng 2008;16:025006] based on the Streitz and Mintmire approach [Streitz FH, Mintmire JW. Phys Rev B 1994;50:11996] is used to study coupled GB motion in an Al bicrystal with a [1 1 2] symmetrical tilt GB in the presence of substitutional O, and compared with the stick–slip process identified by Cahn and Mishin [Cahn JW, Mishin Y, Suzuki A. Acta Mater 2006;54:4953]. It is found…

Nanoparticle dispersion in liquid metals by electromagnetically induced acoustic cavitation

2016

Abstract Aim of this study is to investigate experimentally the effect of magnetically induced cavitation applied for the purpose of nanoparticle dispersion in liquid metals. The oscillating magnetic force due to the azimuthal induction currents and the axial magnetic field excites power ultrasound in the sample. If the fields are sufficiently high then it is possible to achieve the acoustic cavitation threshold in liquid metals. Cavitation bubble collapses are known to create microscale jets with a potential to break nanoparticle agglomerates and disperse them. The samples are solidified under the contactless ultrasonic treatment and later analyzed by electron microscopy and energy-dispers…

High spatial resolution strain measurements at the surface of duplex stainless steels

2007

International audience; The determination of local strain fields at the surface of materials is of major importance for understanding their reactivity. In the present paper, lithography is used to fabricate grid points at the microscale and to map strain gradients within grains and between grains. This method was applied to duplex stainless steels which exhibit heterogeneous strain distributions under straining conditions. The influence of various parameters (the specimen microstructure, the density of slip bands, the number of systems activated and the grid geometry) on the strain value was discussed.

Two-phase dielectric polar structures in 0.1NBT-0.6ST-0.3PT solid solutions

2018

Abstract In this work we address the peculiarities of the macroscopic responses in ternary 0.1Na0·5Bi0·5TiO3-0.6SrTiO3-0.3PbTiO3 (0.1NBT-0.6ST-0.3PT) solid solutions. These solid solutions exhibit a spontaneous first order relaxor to normal ferroelectric phase transition. The phase transition is accompanied by a broad dielectric relaxation which expands over 10 orders of magnitude in frequency just above the phase transition temperature. The temperature dependence of polarization shows that non-zero net polarization persists above the phase transition temperature. Below the phase transition temperature, it is not possible to describe the temperature dependence of polarization with a power l…

Study of the thermochromic phase transition in CuMo1−xWxO4 solid solutions at the W L3-edge by resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy

2021

Abstract Polycrystalline CuMo 1 − x W x O 4 solid solutions were studied by resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) at the W L 3 -edge to follow a variation of the tungsten local atomic and electronic structures across thermochromic phase transition as a function of sample composition and temperature. The experimental results were interpreted using ab initio calculations. The crystal-field splitting parameter Δ for the 5d(W)-states was obtained from the analysis of the RXES plane and was used to evaluate the coordination of tungsten atoms. Temperature-dependent RXES measurements were successfully employed to determine the hysteretic behaviour of the structural phase transition between t…

Interface evolution during magnetic pulse welding under extremely high strain rate collision: mechanisms, thermomechanical kinetics and consequences

2020

Abstract Magnetic pulse welding enables to produce perplexing interfacial morphologies due to the complex material response during the high strain rate collision. Thus, a thermomechanical model is used in this study to investigate the formation mechanism of the wake, vortex, swirling and mesoscale cavities with the increase of the impact intensity at the interface. The formation of these interfacial features are difficult to characterize by insitu methods, thus the origin of phenomena still remain a subject of open discussion. Our studies identify the governing mechanisms and the associated thermomechanical kinetics, which are responsible for the formation mechanism of interfacial features.…

Synergistic effect of fiber content and length on mechanical and water absorption behaviors of Phoenix sp. fiber-reinforced epoxy composites

2016

Phoenix sp. fiber-reinforced epoxy composites have been manufactured using compression molding technique. The effect of reinforcement volume content (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%) and size (300 µm particles, 10 mm, 20 mm, and 30 mm fibers) on quasi-static and dynamic mechanical properties was investigated. Moreover, the water absorption properties of composites were analyzed at different environmental conditions (10℃, 30℃, and 60℃). For each reinforcement size, composites loaded with 40% in volume show highest tensile and flexural properties. Furthermore, composites with 300 µm particles present the best impact properties and the lowest water absorption, regardless of the environmental …

Effect of AlR3 (R = Me, Et, iBu) addition on the composition and microstructure of ethylene/1-olefin copolymers made with post-metallocene complexes …

2018

The effect of trialkylaluminum compound (AlR3, where R = Me, Et, iBu) addition on the performance of the [LigZrCl]2(μ-O)/AliBu3/Ph3CB(C6F5)4 and LigTiCl2/AliBu3/Ph3CB(C6F5)4 (Lig = Me2N(CH2)2N(CH2-2-O-3,5-tBu2-C6H2)2) catalysts in ethylene/1-olefin copolymerization was investigated. The presence of AlMe3 in the feed during the copolymerization process catalyzed by the diamine-bis(phenolate) zirconium catalyst greatly increases the amount of incorporated comonomer and leads to microstructural changes, e.g., the formation of blocky and alternating sequences of 1-olefin units. Moreover, the use of AlMe3 limits the reaction yield and decreases the molecular weight of the produced copolymers. Th…
