Fluorescence microscopy studies of layer/substrate interaction during the Langmuir-Blodgett transfer: Fractional condensation and local layer modific…
1991
Transfer fluorescence microscopy reveals the substrate-mediated fractional condensation and phase-selective deposition of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DMPE) monolayers during the LB-transfer. Preferentially the higher ordered liquid-condensed (LC) state is transferred onto the substrate during the transfer of a monolayer in the LC/LE (liquid/expanded) coexistence state on the water subphase. This is manifested in the directly observable attraction of LC-domains towards the three-phase line and observation of a domain-free gap as consequence of the segregation of the fluorescent probe into the floating monolayer adjacent to the three-phase li…
RETA A TU MENTE, DESAFÍA A TU CEREBRO: COMPLEJIDAD AMBIENTAL Y SALUD CEREBRAL
2016
Abstract.According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that more than 30 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease in the world. Currently, there is great interest in developing strategies to counteract the cognitive decline that accompanies aging and, to a greater extent, neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of the current study is to analyze the experimental evidence supporting the hypothesis that interventions based on novelty and complexity are more effective in order to achieve successful aging. In animal models it has shown that enriched environments and performing voluntary exercise can improve performance in learning and memory tasks, decrease anxiety response and …
Hydrogels for potential colon drug release by thiol-ene conjugate addition of a new inulin derivative.
2008
Inulin was chosen as a starting polymer for biocompatible, pH-sensitive and biodegradable hydrogels. Three INUDVSA-TT hydrogels were obtained by crosslinking inulin derivatives with trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) under varying conditions. The resulting hydrogels were cell compatible, as demonstrated by MTS and trypan blue exclusion assays acting on Caco-2 cells, and were biodegraded by inulinase and esterase, thus suggesting their use as colonic drug delivery systems. 2-Methoxyestradiol, an anti-cancer drug, was soaked in INUDVSA-TT hydrogels and its in vitro release and apoptotic effect on Caco-2 cells were evaluated.
Effect of the host plant on the immunity of a phytophagous insect : influence of grape variety on the ability of the European grapevine moth to defen…
2013
In tritrophic interactions involving phytophagous insects, host plants and natural enemies, trophic levels are highly dependent on each other. Host plant may strongly affect directly phytophagous insect and indirectly natural enemies growing on these phytophagous insects. When a natural enemy attacks a phytophagous insect, the host immune system constitutes the last chance for the host to survive to an infection. A great variation of insect immune system is generally found in populations for susceptibility to pathogens, suggesting that variable selection pressures may have shaped and driven adaptation of immune traits. This project aims to determine the influence of both host plant and natu…
Impact of Plasmopara viticola on starch metabolism and stomachal functions in grapevine leaves
2011
The grapevine downy mildew affects leaves and young berries and can affect the harvest quality and quantity. The causal agent is the obligate biotroph oomycete Plasmopara viticola that induces severe physiological alterations in infected leaves. One is the abnormal accumulation of starch in oil spots, the characteristic symptoms of the disease. Another is a deregulation of stomatal movements. Stomata, natural openings on the leaf surface allowing gas exchanges between the plant and the atmosphere, stay abnormally open during the night and do no longer close upon water stress or ABA treatment in infected leaves. This thesis is divided into two chapters that aim to i) explain the origin and m…
Easy removal of a large mucus plug with a flexible paediatric bronchoscope after administration of rhDNase (Pulmozyme).
2006
Mucoid impaction and plastic bronchitis are relatively rare disorders affecting patients of any age. Here we report the case of mucoid impaction developing in a four-year-old child as a complication of pneumonic infection treated four weeks prior. p.a. chest X-ray and fiberoptic bronchoscopy showed atelectasis and the location of a mucus cast in the left upper lobe. After extraction of the cast via the suction channel of the bronchoscope had failed, we administered 2.5 mg of undiluted recombinant human deoxyribonuclease (rhDNase) instilled directly over the affected area of occlusion for 15 minutes. This mucolytic agent mobilized the cast by reducing viscoelasticity and adherence of mucus. …
Copolymerization of VDF and HFP in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: A Robust Approach for Modeling Precipitation and Dispersion Kinetics
2011
A kinetic model is developed for the heterogeneous free-radical copolymerization of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene in supercritical CO2. The model accounts for polymerization in both the dispersed (polymer-rich) phase and in the continuous (polymer-free) supercritical phase, for radical interphase transport, diffusion limitations, and chain-length-dependent termination in the polymer-rich phase. A parameter evaluation strategy is developed and detailed to estimate most of the kinetic parameters a priori while minimizing their evaluation by direct fitting. The resulting model predictions compare favorably with the experimental results of conversion and MWD at varying monomer fee…
Temperature dependence of surface reorganization characteristics of amphiphilic block copolymer in air and in water studied by scanning force microsc…
2015
We have investigated the surface reorganization characteristics of a novel amphiphilic diblock copolymer, poly(acetic acid-2-(2-(4-vinyl-phenoxy)-ethoxy)-ethylester)-block-polystyrene (PAEES-b-PS), in response to varying interfaces from air to water and vice-versa at various temperatures. The surface reorganization characteristics of the block copolymer films was monitored by scanning force microscopy, in order to delineate the kinetically controlled morphological process of surface reorganization of a diblock copolymer, with a particular emphasis on the phase contrast signal which allowed the determination of local composition patterns of PAEES-b-PS at the surface. Upon heating a water-an…
Polymer Brushes on Flat and Curved Substrates: Scaling Concepts and Computer Simulations
2007
The scaling concepts for isolated flexible macromolecules in good solvent grafted with one chain end to a flat surface (polymer mushrooms) as well as for layers of many overlapping end-grafted chain molecules (polymer brushes) are introduced. Monte Carlo attempts to test these concepts are briefly reviewed. Then the extension of these concepts to polymer brushes grafted to the interior of a cylinder surface is discussed. Molecular Dynamics results on chain average linear dimensions in the direction normal to the grafting surface and in axial direction are described, as well as distribution functions for the density of end monomers and of all monomers of the chains. It is argued that under t…
Influence of surface morphology on melting of polymer crystals II. Loops of random length and partially random reentry
1972
Abstract The melting behavior of single crystals with loops of random length and partially random reentry has been calculated under two different assumptions: (1) at each temperature the loops have an equilibrium end-to-end distance distribution and (2) a certain end-to-end distance distribution of the loops, ω(h), determined by the kinetics of the crystallization is frozen in and maintained during the whole heating process. The ω(h) is calculated by considering the loop formation process during crystallization and by introducing a parameter λ which expresses the tendency of the chains for adjacent reentry. In both cases a melting range is obtained. In case 2, the melting range depends stro…
